FFVI is also one of the most popular of the series.

Re: What games are you currently playing?
I have Final Fantasy VI for my Super Nintendo but haven't even touched it yet! I picked it up at a flea market for around $10
Course here in America the game was titled Final Fantasy III for some reason. I decided it may be better to hop into Final Fantasy VII first since it's easier to get into for newcomers of the series. 6 I can't wait to start though.

FF6 is great, still my favourite in the series (it's so damn goofy and it made me cry). But yeah, it's definitely more on the old-school side of the FF divide. Try FF5 too while you're at it, lotsa fun.
I've gotta try FF9

FF5 unfortunately never came here for SNES, only in the form of a reproduction cartridge if I can find it.
There was one really bad FF game that came here I recall named Mystic Quest

Re: What games are you currently playing?
Each game has a different story so it depends. FF7 has a huge focus on betrayal, the use of machinery to suck up world energy among many other themes, it all works well.
There are Eco-terrorists groups who harm the balance of the world, Cloud joins a mercenary group named AVALANCHE who fights against this group known as Shinra.

Re: What games are you currently playing?
Final Fantasy ain't about shit. It's a series, or maybe more of a serial, of games with unconnected stories and a shared heritage (plus chocobos). The earlier games had more in common with each other - light crystals and shit - but the brand has evolved quite far from those beginnings and introduced many new concepts. From the nineties to the mid-2000s they basically defined JRPGs in the mind of the western audience. That's just the main series though; some individual games have recieved sequels (see X and X-2), some belong to genre-spanning universes (see the Ivalice Alliance games), some are Chocobo Mystery Dungeon...
They're also terrible and we're all just mindless sheep being herded towards the slaughter

I really like the themes of FF7 though, it's dark but the game still has many moments of comedic relief.
Candish is right though, each game takes place in an alternate universe. So each game has a different story. All of these games have different goals.

Re: What games are you currently playing?
Yes, people who say FF7 is grimdark probably haven't played it
it's full of shenanigans!
I do dislike the compilation for getting rid of much of that goofiness. And erasing Cloud's character development in favour of Fashionable Brooding.
EDIT: Tbh there is a shared meta-emphasis on narrative in Final Fantasy, but since that's now bread and butter for JRPGs that doesn't make the series distinctive anymore.

Re: What games are you currently playing?
Yes, I saw Crisis core (kind of a continuation of FF7?)
They turned Cloud into a total edgy character, I loved his kind of sarcastic personality in FF7, dunno why they did that for Crisis Core.

Wasn't Crisis Core a prequel of sorts? That was the game that focused on Zack, aye?

Re: What games are you currently playing?
oh, we're having a bit of discussion on final fantasy are we, well as a matter of fact, since I got my vita:

I've kinda been going on a bit of a final fantasy binge, I've been playing through 1,4, and 6 again, 6 is still my favourite in the series (despite the ps1 version's atrocious load times, as well as playing 9 for the first time and I really have to say I am falling in love with 9 its so good, it looks great, it plays great, I love the characters, its just great.
Also as you can see I've been playing Dissidia 012, and I have to say, whilst I've never liked street fighter style fighting games (I think VG cats put it best by calling them exams in videogame form) I've always enjoyed, what I like to call, Resource management fighters, the most well known example I can tink of is probably the Naruto fighting games, and thats what Dissidia is and I think it's great, its a load of fun and thats just offline because sadly them multiplayer is pretty much dead. instead of remembering stupidly long combo's, you have two buttons, 12 attacks (6 on ground, 6 in the air) adn half of those attacks are bravery attacks, which is you're resource, the rest are HP attacks, meaning that battle relies more on timing, and thats great because for the most part the very large roster of characters are going to lose if you just go in and repeatedly mash the buttons becuase of charge up and cool down animations (the only one I can think of that has worked with for me is Vaan, and to some extent lightning, but those were both in the story were the ai is dumber than the ones you fight against in vs mode. I definitely think it's worth it and I hear that a 3rd Dissidia s being made for japanese arcades but frankly I would kill for a vita port.

I've never played Crisis Core only seen tidbits, so you're likely correct. Zach was the main playable character.

Oooh, all the good stuff I hear about FF9 comes from people with similar taste to me
Oh, Rayf: repsonding to you quite a few posts back, Shinra's a multinational, not an eco-terrorist organisation (though they're kinda the same thing EH EH POLITICAL COMMENTARY

Forgive me for that, also Candish I wanted to ask, I'm on the part where I'm just obtained the third huge materia from the underwater base.

Pretty damn close, if I rightly recall. My experience of VII was mostly second-hand (watching my boyf play it), so don't take my word for it!

What? Oh I deleted it since it was just me feeling stupid for using the word eco for Shinra, but never mind that. ^^
Cool to see you have someone to watch FF with. I'm trying to get my girlfriend into FF since she's a huge Dragon quest fanatic. (Also by square)

Ahah, oh no, an ex! He was from quite a while ago now.
I adored DG5, I'd love to play more of the series.

Re: What games are you currently playing?
Aha, sorry! That might've been a touchy subject, didn't mean to get into that.
Yes, I watched her play through DQ8 and it was excellent, I think it lacked a bit of a story as good as FF's though. It's hard to play all these RPG's since they're fairly long games and I've got community college to deal with ;_;
I just want like a whole month off to go on an RPG hiatus
Actually I'm pretty happy to see there are some FF fans here on RPC who don't just play Pokemon. I really didn't know RPC had any fans for FF or DQ, so I'm really happy to see that!

Re: What games are you currently playing?
Not touchy at all, don't worry!
Yeah, RPGs are a real drag on time, particularly if they're grind-heavy. Toiling through life only to toil some more in a virtual world isn't exactly fun by any metric... but hopefully things will ease up and you'll have more leisure time!
I can't say I'm a fan of the newer FFs at all really, though FFX's battle system was guh-reat (I kinda want to get X-2 for that reason), but the old ones are charming little things.
Stop reminding me that pokemon exists and I can play it
no fundz 4 dat
