There never was a need for another after U, let's be real. Regardless, I can't wait to get the game.
It's a shame there's no slopes though.
And no deserts either :/
Although I do think these might come with a later update
I'm pretty sure this isn't the end for 2D Mario games. This game just feels to limited to be that. Even Miyamoto stated that Mario Maker will shape the future for Mario games.

Note of critique: Maybe you should try adding some more depth to it, as right now the hallway is quite empty
Right now I only have the 1st and 2nd row of buiding items, but I'll definitely refine it over time. And depth will come when I figure out how to warp pipe ^^
I'm sure there'll be more 2D Mario, but it probably won't be more from the NSMB series. It'd be really refreshing to see 2D Mario with a new look and some more personality than the most recent ones, they feel more like games trying to evoke nostalgia and reintroduce old gimmicks than trying to be their own thing, and that's something I wouldn't mind never returning in any near future Mario game.
I finally picked it up, came with a neat artbook too. I'm having a lot of fun, despite the limitations. I haven't actually made a level yet. How does one unlock more of the themes? Do I keep playing more levels to unlock or does it really encourage me to make a level?
I think you're supposed to build for 5ish minutes then the game tells you that you will get the next set of assets the following day. after that keep playing the game or wait a few hours and turn on the game and the delivery truck will drop it off early. I'm not sure the specifics of it though since nintendo never elaborated on how the updates supposed to work.
It's pretty simple. Though I kinda wish they included some sort of cheat code to just get everything right away, because knowing myself I'll probably not make a level until I have the most possible freedom with it.
oh and IGN has some other things as well, if you wanna unlock Tall Mario for your shitpost levels.

I hope you managed to get it for a good price since I remember you were not willing to get it for full price.
I'm personally waiting for a possible discount chance around Xmas time. With some luck I might grab a copy until there, I really want this game.
Alright so, I got the game and unlocked everything now, and I'm really falling in love with it. Obviously I'm not gonna make some dull level though - I've set out to make the dumbest, biggest, most gimmicky level possible. I've seen some crazy stuff done with SMBX and I'd love to try and translate some of those mechanics into Mario Maker.
I'll probably also check out a couple levels from you guys tomorrow.

Can you give their names? So I can add it to the OP.
Forgot to put in the pictures for my stages, here's "The Groove Armada's" (I hope somebody gets the reference in that one)
and this one goes to "Pink Plant Woods"
On top of those, here's one of my early stages, known simply as "Fly!" (66E5-0000-0020-CD46)
Making a level currently. It honestly annoys me how the game is forcing me to wait for new objects to arrive. I could've sworn there was a patch/update that removed this. Such bullshit.
I'm having a hard time creating pipe to exit pipes. I look at the virtual manual with Mary-o (lol), and it says to drag Mario's sprite into the pipe to create another one but this isn't working for me. I think I might try changing the date of my wii U forward by one day until I get all the unlocks.
Ah, the ol' time travel trick. Haven't NInty caught onto it? I remember some Pokémon games that would delay in-game events if you messed with the clock.
