- A dead computer, damn.
+ I still have another one.
+ Linux is coming along pretty nicely.
- That dead computer holds Terabytes of data, and was the remaining machine in the Vault with a DVD reader, I hope I'll be able to McGyver it...

– What happened?
+ Looking over some old posts from DesLife for nostalgia.
– Missing DesLife.
+ Programmed a wallpaper rotator.
– Changing the wallpaper makes the screen jump with this window manager.
– I should really see a dentist.

Well, some months ago the RAM of my computer was corrupted and for some reason, Linux could still run on it, but tonight I updated my Slackware to 14.2, and the electricity was cut for ten seconds in the middle of the update, leaving me with an unbootable machine, linux being the last usable OS, my machine is now unusable.PluMGMK wrote:– What happened?
-No money to buy RAM, I'll try to do my best.
Re: Pluses (+) and minuses (−) of this day
Make a bootable USB drive or something. You might still be able to run it and recover the data.

Re: Pluses (+) and minuses (−) of this day
All the RAM? Is there only one module?
Re: Pluses (+) and minuses (−) of this day
Lol, my livecd images are all on the dead computer...jurebj wrote:Make a bootable USB drive or something. You might still be able to run it and recover the data.
Yup, both of them, one made the computer unbootable and the other is corrupted but still usable.PluMGMK wrote:All the RAM? Is there only one module?

Shoot. How old are they?
Re: Pluses (+) and minuses (−) of this day
As far as I know Linux can detect which sectors of RAM are broken and not use them. So if you installed it on an USB you could boot from it, or you could just take the disk out of the broken PC and put it in the working one.

Re: Pluses (+) and minuses (−) of this day
Hmm, my server had some bad RAM in it back in 2014, and so it often locked up for no apparent reason. So that detection ain't foolproof!

Fuckin' eight...PluMGMK wrote:Shoot. How old are they?
I wasn't sure of it but thanks for confirming my thoughtjurebj wrote:As far as I know Linux can detect which sectors of RAM are broken and not use them.
But it is the only "real" computer I have, aside of it I have my Alienware Laptop...jurebj wrote:just take the disk out of the broken PC and put it in the working one.

Re: Pluses (+) and minuses (−) of this day
+ Vim 8 is out.
– So is kernel 4.8-rc6 and it still can't load the nouveau firmware.
– Too scared to file a bug report.
– Electricity went off today and when it came back my server came back on… with no network.
^6
– This sort of rubbish never happened before the switch to SystemD.
+ We're on page 900, I just noticed!

Heh heh, now you know why I dislike it, just switch to BSD Unit or to OpenRC if you can.PluMGMK wrote:– This sort of rubbish never happened before the switch to SystemD.
+Updated some software on my computer.

Re: Pluses (+) and minuses (−) of this day
– I'd kind of like to switch back to Upstart, which is what the server used before the Ubuntu upgrade, but somehow I doubt it'd be supported.
+ I get the feeling it's not so much SystemD, but the way Ubuntu configures it by default.
– I have no idea what to change.
EDIT: + I have an idea… Ubuntu uses NetworkManager, but on my CLFS PC I use SystemD-ResolveD instead, which is simpler. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Re: Pluses (+) and minuses (−) of this day
Well, a friend of mine suggested me CentOS for the servers.
Why do you use Ubuntu ?!
+Listening some trance.
+Slicing here and there in my PC, nothing serious, can't wait to get my hands on the pieces I'm waiting.
- I'd like to use Slackware on my Raspberry Pi, but I'm afraid to be unable to afterwards be unable to find the packages I'll need. So I have to fall back on Raspbian.
- Feeling curious, but now I'm thinking about it the moon is soon full and it always triggers some weird feelings inside me...
