Did Rabbids Really Ruin Rayman?

I actually like the first game too, it's on the higher end of the "motion control is so fucking cool!!" minigame collections and the rabbids are actually kinda funny. i like that they're these insane creatures who constantly beat each other up and kidnap others for their amusement, that zany lunacy lands better than the more minion-esque approach of later games. the game has a cool aesthetic, all the weird shit and the rabbids jumping from funny to unnerving so quickly, etc.

Hmm, I admit that it does feel like we've ended up in a classic vs modern divide like the Sonic fandom. But even so, I do believe that those who outright hate and degrade the UbiArt titles do tend to be hit with extreme opposition from folks with preferences on either side.

Even with our differences, I think the majority of folk here do believe that the UbiArt titles are good games, though not aligning to their tastes and desires from the Rayman series.

I really like the first Rabbids game as well. In addition to the minigames being fun, original, varied, and great examples of inventive motion control so early on (ironically, the only minigames I didn't like were the dancing ones), it had great artwork and atmosphere. Some people seem to like RRR2's minigames more, but to me they feel bland and standard in comparison. Any and all Raymanian magic was also completely thrown out the window, and they gave him a rabbid"s voice (wtf)?

Yeah not sure as to why they did that, maybe they couldn't be bothered to voice new lines for Rayman or something. I just know that he sounds like that from a story perspective because he's trying to blend in with the Rabbids as shown in the intro cut-scene.
 
I didn't like that it aimed for more a party thing and lacked a story mode, I don't really care that much for purely playing minigames. The first game having an end goal, some story elements and a sense of progression through unlocking the next set of minigames or many of them actually revolving around the idea of Rayman being forced to do all these trials is a much more interesting touch than the "what if the rabbid in classroom imagine if that x-)" comedy of the next two games.

oh HUH i never thought of it like that. they should've had rayman wear the rabbid ears and do an impression of their noises, that would've been kinda funny.
 
Oh yeah, I forgot that RRR2 had Rayman become this weird Rabbid spy, I think I was more bothered about the shift to Earth at the time.

I don't play RRR 1 and 2 anymore, I kinda just found to be uninterested in the whole party thing now. I'd rather have used free roaming and fists to beat the Rabbids, not using a plunger gun and being unable to move around freely. Did Rabbids ruin Rayman? I wouldn't say that per se. Was it the right move to do the party thing? No not really. The Rayman 4 would've have been the better choice, since it would've been more "Rayman," compared to previous titles. I actually would've enjoyed playing in a 3D version of Picture City and Band Land, it could've been a whole new experience, while still retaining that good old nostalgia feeling.

Origins and Legends are good games overall. Is it Rayman 1 and 2 good? No. Not close. Not sure if anyone ever brought this up before in the past, but there's this one area that would require some sitting down and thinking, where the early Rayman titles (specifically R1 and R2 compared to RO and RL), out-shined. Character development.

As it would happen, yes I do believe Rayman 2 is the worst mainline title, since it's only really fun for one playthrough and the occasional look back. And while 1 & 2 may have more solid stories, The Ubiart titles both have far better gameplay IMO. And perhaps to justify why I put the rabbids together collectively it's because I love party games and find the value of the original trilogy put together to be more entertaining than the first two Rayman titles.

Interesting. Are you talking about original Rayman 2? Revolution? Or R2 in general? Revolution adds plenty to original versions, free roaming was the best addition in that version.

I have no problem with the RRR titles. I enjoyed the first two for a while, but got bored quickly since it just don't feel like a true Rayman game, especially RRR2.
 
Mainly the earlier versions of the game (N64/PC/Dreamcast), Revolution adds a shit ton of enhancements to the game that make it much better (minus the glitches), but I still prefer to judge it by its earlier installments.

I think Raving Rabbids was a good party game but I just don't happen to really like the genre, so I never cared much for it. Obviously the later titles got worse as Ubi tried to make the most of the Rabbids' growing popularity, but at least they separated the franchises and Rayman was eventually left alone.

So, I don't think the Rabbids really ruined Rayman, however they paused the series and we might have lost a good 10-15 years.

I strongly disagree. Revolution could have been a great game but the way they screwed up with the original material (such as mixing up some levels) makes me prefer the original version by far.

I think the Rabbids made Ubisoft realize what's trendy and what works for Rayman the most. Let's be honest, Ubiart's Rayman games sell AMAZINGLY, but Ubisoft makes a complete drama about it not selling as much as Assassin's Creed or Watch Dogs.

Ubisoft needs to pull their heads out of their asses: Rayman in no way can sell better than Mario, and the numbers that Rayman pulls are pretty much equivalent to current Mario games.

It's also a miracle that Rayman got to those numbers. Platformers don't usually do that great in Sony/Microsoft consoles. Nintendo's consoles in the other hand do a great job earning sales for Rayman, but the Wii was dying and the Wii port of Rayman Origins was poorly advertised... and Rayman Legends went through a last minute controversy that could ruin the perspective of every single Wii U owner (And the Wii U had terrible sales). Will Legends sell well on the Switch? who knows... maybe? I personally don't believe it, since it's a 3 year old port of a game that almost everyone played at this point.

As for Rayman not being serious anymore... what did you expect, guys. Every single franchise stopped the "Goofy looking character with an edgy story" after the Gamecube era.

Sonic 2006 marked the limit of what should be dark and gritty. Now Sonic games are goofy, colorful and silly. The same goes for Mario games. Kids nowadays just enjoy wacky, colorful stuff.
 
I want Rayman games to be goofy, colorful and silly. But with some semblance of story and character--more like Rayman 3. That game hit the sweet spot between mindless mascot platformer and dark story-based epic.

I don't like when limits are imposed like this, because it entirely depends on the execution. It may be extremely difficult to pull off, but there's no reason why, for instance, even an M-rated Sonic game couldn't be good.

Probably because they were too lazy to program a voice for him so it was easier to use the same clips for everyone :P.

That's correct.

I do not touch the home console versions of RRR since Summer of 2015 and only because I had two guests and one of them never played the three games with us in multiplayer. It was fun while it lasted. As for playing alone for score improvement I for sure must not touch them for over 4 or 5 years. If I was replaying the story mode of each, it would be only if I were to record walkthroughs but that's not in my plans for now. I want to desintoxicate myself for a little longer after all those hours spent in them and play other games worth of my attention :mryellow:. As for the handlet versions, they are catching dust for more time. But funny enough, it is more likely I will record walkthroughs of these first than the others :P.
