Personally, I think Harry Belafonte deserves to be an option. It's only fair.

I picked the knaarens, Land of the Livid Dead and the swampy bog. The knaarens might actually be my favourite of the three - It has some of the most consistent platforming and it's much more oriented around platforming too which is a good break from the combat-heavy previous areas. I like the presentation a lot too, it's not quite the spectacle of LotLD but I do think the great hall and all the claustrophobic passages are great, or even that weird final area back outside in the desert. It feels more like an actual place than just a setting for the game to take place in.

I wasn't a big fan of most of TDOTK. I feel like I should enjoy it more, but I just associate it with dark, kind-of ugly lighting, annoying enemies/puzzles, and a relatively slow progression. TLOTLD is nice, but feels a bit dragged out.

The Swampy Bog is probably my favourite level, since it doesn't waste any time, has a lot of variety both in its environment and gameplay, and the presentation (music, atmosphere, characters) is fantastic. I'll give Hoodlum Headquarters a close second, since it's probably the most fun level in the game, and they milked that "self-sustained automated organic factory creepiness" really well out of a lot of areas.

I picked the Fairy Council, Land of the Livid Dead, Longest Shortcut and Summit Beyond the Clouds.

I've always thought the Fairy Council was a really good introduction into the game, it sort of eases you into the new environment and I'd say it's one of the more Rayman 2-ish levels in the game. It manages to have a kind of mysterious atmosphere, and then a tense chase, and a dramatic destructing castle each with fitting music all in one level without feeling too crowded or inconsistent.

Land of the Livid Dead is good from the atmosphere to the actual level deign, but it always feels less memorable than the other levels for me. I suppose maybe it feels a little less varied in terms of atmosphere, but it still has some particularly great parts like the tower and Leviathan crawling into the sea.

The Longest Shortcut is probably one of the most repetitive and least varied levels in the game but I've always liked it. It was so particularly outlandish compared to the rest of the game that since my childhood it's remained prominent in my memory. I suppose it's a combination of the change to the strange floating crowns, the music etc. and the lack of enemies really gives this level a feeling that it's made for a bit of a calmer experience where you have to solve some simple puzzles and do a bit of tricky platforming to get through this almost otherworldly limbo of a shortcut through space, that's what I thought of it anyway.

Summit is probably my favorite level, I've always loved the ship section and the whole of the snow section feels very fleshed out and more place-y than level-y if that makes sense, almost a complete contrast to Shortcut which was pretty much just level. The music's great and the snowboarding part didn't feel tacked on but actually gave the level some variation.

Most of these choices are more influenced by nostalgia than anything I think, so the more memorable levels stick out more to me.

Yeah Longest Shortcut has great atmosphere, but I think it would've been more interesting if they incorporated the platforming into the scenery rather than just having these big rooms with platforms in them because game. I think the quiet mysterious vibe they were going for could've lended itself nicely to some rooms with statues and surreal scenery (I really like that outside area at the end of the first level). Some visual storytelling of what exactly the place is supposed to be would be interesting and make it more an actual place (what if the longest shortcut was set in the hall of doors :?: )

The Longest Shortcut has some strange soundscapes. You can hear the sound of switches being activated in the distance. Makes me think that there are more temples than just the ones Rayman visits. Temples being navigated by other marauders. Part of me wonders if it's a prison of sorts, intended to drive people insane. The Teensies figured that Rayman and Globox would be smart/nimble/divinely-assisted enough to get through it as a "shortcut" though. They were only half-right…

These are just the kinds of things I imagined when I played this level as a kid, and it's probably why this level in particular is one of my favourites despite it's shortcomings :)

Let's move on to the third poll: "Do you think Rayman Origins did a good job bringing the Rayman series back to its 2D roots?"

While I don't think it's particularly similar to the original, I went with yes as I think it shares a lot of basic qualities that the original had. The well-drawn 2-D graphics, the quality music and smooth platforming that made the original so good are all features of Origins so I'd say it did a good job of bringing back the experience you'd have playing the original for the first time, if not quite the style of the game.

Bump.

Let's see if this can be revived. The fifth poll is: "Favorite soundtrack from the main series?"

Now that's tricky. I think my overall favourite tracks from the series mostly come from Rayman 3, but I'm not sure I'd consider it the best on average. Going by averages is a bit difficult for me to figure, especially given the general vibe of the tracks. Rayman 2, for example, tends to go for a more atmospheric OST, and while it has recurring leitmotifs, I wouldn't consider it to be "catchy," when compared to tracks from games like Rayman 1.

It's definitely hard for me to think on average, hmm...I think I'll go for Rayman 1.

The cuts from Rayman 1 that stand out the most to me are the more ominous or mysterious tracks, the Gong Heights/meditation music, or the one from Picture City that's all made out of ripping paper and whatever, in general the ambient interludes between the music is a great touch. I also think it's the most memorable of the soundtracks, to the point where the Band Land theme alone seems to be one of the most recognisable and first things people bring up about the game.

Raymung 3 is a close second though, I just wish a few more of the levels had a very distinct theme to them. I like what they did with Clearleaf Forest and The Tower of Leptys, but both of them kind of lacked a good memorable tune.

Rayman 1 has never really struck me as particularly "Rayman-ish", probably because when I played the game as a kid the music never worked and we played the game with sound effects only so I don't have that nostalgic connection to it.
Rayman 2 has some pretty amazing atmospheric pieces and catchy tunes but it doesn't seem to stand alone as it's own music very well. It goes brilliantly with the game but there isn't enough variation to be the kind of music I'd just listen to alone.
That's why I have to choose Rayman 3, it has a lot of varied music which could actually be great standalone tracks of music but also work really well with the game. Rayman 2's music is probably the most nostalgic and best as a videogame soundtrack, but for the music itself independent from the game I prefer R3's.

Well, 3D is what I'd like most at this stage. But truth be told, I don't want it to directly follow the steps of a single past game. I love Rayman 2's tone and lore, but its gameplay was surpassed by Rayman 3. However, I'm not so keen on Rayman 3's approach to humour, and I do feel that it could have balanced between combat and platforming a bit better. The UbiArt games might not be to my taste in terms of tone also, but I did enjoy the enivironments and rewarding players for exploring every nook and cranny. There's elements from all the past games that I feel inspiration should be taken from.

With that in mind, while I know it is a bit of a fad at this point, I'd like for Rayman to give a more open world approach a try, or perhaps something a bit like Twinsanity, where areas flow into each other, but the ability to backtrack is presented in a more explorative manner. Another genre I've mused about in the past is the Metroidvania style of gameplay. This is more inline with Rayman 1 than the future titles, but I feel it's something that could work.

I chose a 3D game inspired by R3. While I suppose I like R2 the most out of nostalgia, I agree about the gameplay of R3 and I'd rather play it again than R2. Hopefully the humor would be... better... but I'd be sad to see Rayman turn into something more serious and edgy.
Of course I wouldn't want just some rehash of R3 but I think it makes for the best game in the series and if you could combine the gameplay and design of R3 with the atmosphere and lasting impression of R2 you'd have the ideal Rayman 4 I've wanted to play since childhood.
A more open world approach would be nice but I've always liked linear games a little more than vastly open ones, so maybe something on the scope of Mario Galaxy 2 would be my preference.
