Corbyn's victories are some much needed reinforcements that the rise in populism spins both ways and doesn't mean it's necessarily a right-wing movement at all - When people realise the shortcomings of the status quo and the right, it's the perfect time for a true progressive to sweep in and I hope the US can find that same kind of momentum. Corbyn's platform of protecting the environment and NHS, and expanding access to better broadband makes me incredibly excited. We don't have time to sit around and struggle with people like May anymore, environmental issues need our attention right now.

As for Corbyn, I have to say, I was pretty surprised. The majority of polls, barring two, stated that Labour were set to lose a significant amount of seats. It appears Labour's winnings are in part due to the large youth turnout, and I think Corbyn really did inspire in his campaigning, something which May definitely lacked.
It's likely that the Tories are going to remain in power however, and while I don't mind them dealing with Brexit, I don't agree with the greater authoritarianism that they've had creeping in since they won in the last elections. I voted Lib Dem since they were the only party in my area who properly opposed the Snooper's Charter, while Labour shuffled their feet. I hope that with this increased share, Labour show a little more backbone with this matter, in light of the ever increasing surveillance laws and plans that the Tories have mentioned in regards to the internet.

Well here in Ireland it's always been the populist left, ever since the water charges fiasco started. I was actually surprised when I first heard of a populist right. Though obviously I'm used to both kinds now.Keane said:

Not a huge politics person- but what are your guys thoughts in regards to Trump not allowing transgender people into the US military? I share the same opinion as pretty much everyone in regards to this. I'm all for equality, and I think no matter what 'gender' you list yourself as, I don't think that should forbid one from serving their country if they so choose to, but I'm sure there are some more complications in regards to that.

I understand the need to be wary of medical conditions, but being transgender has little to no monetary expense, barring one-time surgeries, which have nothing to do with the military. It being disruptive is a more valid concern, but the disruptions themselves would likely only be caused by other people reacting to the idea, not from the trans person themselves.
You could even make the argument that trans people tend to be a little more emotionally unstable and that that's not something you'd want in the military, but that again isn't exclusive to transgenderism; it makes the most sense simply have one set of requirements every individual needs to meet.

To be precise, the costs Trump are talking about would take up 0.0014% of the military budget, about equivalent to a nickle of their spending. The biggest criticism of the US military is that our spending on it has gone to such an extreme that it's cutting into our spending for other areas like healthcare and infrastructure, so I think we can reasonably assume the generals are just trying to wiggle out of not covering health expenses or maybe there's a more bigoted reason.
I mean, I don't think Trump is a bigot, he just parrots whatever his group of "smart people" say, but the Republican case behind this has been really questionable like this wonderfully odd rant Steve King did the other day. It's the oldest Republican trick in the book to pass legislation discriminating against minorities and act like it's a purely economic thing, if you were to believe them then nigs and fags have been threatening the US economy since the 1950s. Although to be fair it's not a full party effort, a few Republicans are taking a more liberal position.

I see it more as the fact that a large percentage of people are not comfortable being around transgender people. The army may be even more guilty of that because in order to move a large group of men (of which the lowest personnel aren't the brightest guys in society), simplicity is key.Adsolution said:

I just wanted to add that in the military it's an even more complex matter since the lower ranks are stupids and the whole machine runs on tradition.
