Nice! They seem to have good soundtracks. The HD version on the Xbox has glitchy music for me so it kind of ruins it.

That song is really stuck in my head now lol.

I think the most catchy one for me was that one from Origins with the Banjo "Tricky Treasure"

Hoodlum Havoc was the first 3D rayman game I played (that didn't have Rabbids) and I thought it was weird at first and I wouldn't like it, but now I feel a lot like replaying it and really want to see a new 3D game. Plus the score I got is obviously gonna be terrible because I just basically played through it without paying too much attention to it and haven't replayed any levels.

OK that's embarrassing. 168060 and 48 cages. That really has to be worked on, everyone else has like 700000+ :mrgreen:

Thanks, that has a lot of info. That will give me something to do while I'm waiting on the other games to get here with this weather.

I might even just start a new game and play through the story again just to see what I get then try improving it playing levels. The PS2 version is the only one I own but I know the PC, gamecube and Xbox versions won't have the frame drops the ps2 does. Then again it's not exactly game breaking I still enjoyed it :)

I think that Rayman 2 was also ahead of its time when it initially released and I still see it as the better game between the two, but obviously with the generational gap Rayman 3 fairs better in terms of age.

If we do get a new 3D Rayman game, I would really like to see a mix of the great platforming that Rayman 2 had to offer and the combat system that Rayman 3 set the standards for, because I think both titles had one of these elements missing.

Yeah, it has aged well unlike Rayman 2, where some aspects of the game feel outdated. Nothing wrong with that of course, but in Rayman 3 it's more fast-paced and action-packed, and the combat holds up quite well.

Yeah, I have been thinking about that. Also, the difference in the graphic aspect seems enormous. I think I prefer Rayman 3's gameplay, to the exception that Rayman 2's controls seem to have a better response. I mean, moves are executed in the exact moment you press the button, you don't have to wait for another animation to finish or anything. I don't know if I'm explaining myself here.

Anyway, I've been replaying R3 and I just got to the Desert of the Knaaren. Saying this level scared the hell out of me when I was little is an understatement. However, seeing it now, i think the Knaaren are so cool and interesting and the level is so beautiful.

When I got Rayman 3 back when it was released I thought it was so different to Rayman 2 and that Rayman was cooler before. That R3 felt less magical and "raymanish". Now, however, I do see each game has its strenghts and weaknesses. Rayman 2 hasn't aged quite as well indeed and I see many references (like sound effects, enemies, some objects, mechanics, etc.) that connect those games. I think the characters' personalities (Rayman's and Globox's) changed for the better in a way because even if they were goofy, that added some spark and, well, gave them an actual personality. I could do without Globox being drunk 95% of the time though, he could have been useful by using the rain dance for example.

The main reason that I don't find them overall superior to Rayman 2's controls is the lack of variety, for example, the sliding mechanics are completely obsolete and plums barely add any substance to the game, That's not to say Rayman 3 doesn't have variety at all, but it's certainly lacking when compared to its predecessor.

For me It doesn't compare to Jano's mouth from Rayman 2, In my first playthrough the Knaaren did intially turn me off, but that was mostly because of the music, and after a relative helped me get through the first part of the level I didn't get the same effect from them anymore, Jano in the other hand made me quit Rayman 2, for me to only 8 years later have enough courage to beat the game.

I'd definitely agree, their stages are some of the most interesting in the game.
 
If I purchase the gog version of Rayman 3 for PC and use that better Rayman 3 patch on it would it be a much better version of the game? I feel like the HD version on Xbox is very glitchy for some reason so I'd rather the PS2 version over it.

Edit: Just realised it's on uplay but would that patch work on that version too?

Well, Globox burping all of those bubbles when he was intoxicated did prove helpful to Rayman various times. But yeah I much rather prefer the rain dance. Not sure why Ubisoft decided to get rid of it. I guess they felt it didn't fit well into the game as it did in Rayman 2.
 
Man you guys are wusses. I feel like I'm literally the only person on the forum who wasn't somehow ever scared of cheesy, over-the-top spoop in children's video games.

As for the mechanics, Rayman 2 has the fastest, snappiest, most flexible and responsive platforming mechanics in any 3D platformer I've played by far. When you're quickly running, jumping and rolling everywhere dodging shit, it's exhilarating. Rayman 3 by default stunts this given the simple fact that he has only one jump height (no tap-jumps) and his horizontal speed slows down to a walking pace as soon as you lift off the ground. This, well, by definition, completely kills any kind of momentum the character has, making what would normally be a simple platforming challenge in any other game a lot more difficult. Truth be told, they do execute it well, but it removes a lot of potential variety on the platforming front.

Aside from them arguably feeling ever so slightly unpolished, especially due to things like the stop-motion vertex animation system, I don't think Rayman 2's controls have aged at all really. Every move you pull off connects and feels incredibly satisfying. The sliding physics can be a bit janky at times, but you rarely saw mechanical variety like that so directly integrated into the environment at the time. Rayman feels like a lovely ball of body parts hurdling through spacetime.

Wouldn't disagree with you to be honest, I mean, obviously the fear is long gone since I'm way past the age of 5, but to this day I have a problem watching horror films.

I see where you're coming from, but I've never minded it personally as it seems the game was built with these controls in mind, and I think it more then makes up for that with the extra precision of moving Rayman with the analog stick and the welcome change of the helicopter hair from toggle to hold, which also was kept for the UbiArt games.

Neither do I, when I said Rayman 2 has aged I was talking about the fact that it's a Dreamcast title, so graphically it cannot be on par with something that you'd see nowadays. every game ages to a certain degree, even something that originally released for something like the original PS4 is now somewhat dated with the PS4 Pro's additional power.

Ye, the helicopter was probably Rayman 2's most momentum-breaking implementation, because it's the thing that slows you down to a walking pace. I don't find that distracting or difficult to use like sergiomonty claims, but it coupled with the toggle made it so it wasn't as useful in the midst of action. You could still pull it off though, and when you did it was satisfying. That being said, Rayman 3's still moves at a walking pace, but you're already at a walking pace when you jump, so...

What do you mean about the analogue control though? Rayman 2's always had full analogue support. Why wouldn't it? The only 3D platformers that didn't were pre-dualshock PS1 games.

Well, we'd like to think that, though the additional power included with the Pro makes such a small difference it's basically a joke. I can play Uncharted HD collection at 1440p instead of 1080p, and at a slightly lower framerate? sweet

I got a Pro, but I had the spare cash so it's like why not.

Yeah, of course Rayman 2 has full analog support, I was talking about which game has the smoothest control when just moving Rayman around.
Again that's not to say that Rayman 2's are not precise, just not as much.

I got the Xbox One X myself. I have a PS4 slim. The difference between the original Xbox one and one X is a lot more than the difference between ps4 and pro like let's face it, the ps4 was actually more powerful than the original Xbox one model to begin with so they kind of needed the upgrade more. The One X is what got me playing Rayman again though when I was downloading games and Origins was a free gold game on my friends account.

About the controls though, the toggle flight is a little bit off putting when you switch back to Rayman 3 after playing Rayman 2 and you forget that it's not toggle. Also I'm not sure how other version react as of yet but the weird thing with the Dreamcast is my vibration pack doesn't rumble if I hold A while I'm flying but if I tap it to toggle and let go then it starts to vibrate. I find that a bit odd that it was programmed like that. I have to try out the PS1 and PS2 version when they arrive and see if they do the same thing.

Edit: And this is the rayman 3 topic anyway so oops

I managed to get better Rayman 3 working on the uplay copy I bought. Looks much better especially compared to the ps2 on my 50 inch 4K TV :mrgreen:

But how old were you when you first saw Jano's sharp teeth behind Rayman and a Knaaren attacking without any warning :?:
 
Eh, I think the Knaaren lose their horror factor somewhat thanks to their dialogue. The Mini-Janos eating Rayman is probably the spookiest it got.
 
I loved that animation. It never scared me in the slightest, I just liked how dark and graphic it wa{s}(luigi) :!:
 
I'm really bad at this scoring thing. I replayed The Fairy Council and only got 12000. I seen the scoring thread and still couldn't even keep the combo when I jumped off the stone bridge. I'll just have to keep at it I suppose :)
 
I swear some of those combos are borderline frame-perfect, and the amount of dedication the scorers have is auts, like, greater than SM64 speedrun levels of auts. I'm satisfied with my score of ~620k I got when I was like 10 or 11, though at some point in time I'll probably revisit it and try and land in the 800k range.
