Re: The You Game!
< sees. When < tried 16 it just plain wouldn't start on <'s PC but 14 would. < doesn't entirely get why but thinks it might be related to UEFI vs CSM. < would prefer it to work in UEFI which it has on other people's computers. < basically has the choice to use <' s main PC, the HP laptop or a PC with an i3 2120 that they have as a spare. < also has a Q8200 CPU and an LGA775 board but < thinks the i3 would be a lot better still. < just needs a PSU or simple GPU that doesn't need lots of power as the motherboard only has onboard VGA

Re: The You Game!
< is surprised that there would be GPU driver issues for on-board graphics. Both Intel and AMD have really opened everything up so it "should" work out of the box. Then again, maybe the open-source drivers don't even cover really old ones, at least in AMD's case…
Re: The You Game!
< meant the older boards but < actually thinks the i3 may have DVI.
<'s main PC has a GTX970 which was having the issues with Ubuntu but < may give it another try. < doesn't drink anymore so < has nothing else to do on Paddy's day than play Revolution or install a distro

Re: The You Game!
Ah, GTX970. Yes, before NVIDIA released their signed firmware there was no way that would work out-of-the-box with a Linux kernel. Even now, Debian probably won't work with it because of the Linux-libre kernel, but Ubuntu should work better. Of course to get the best out of it you'll need NVIDIA's proprietary driver.
Also < didn't realize that the problem with "onboard VGA" was the interface rather than the onboard-ness of the GPU.

Re: The You Game!
< didn't explain it very well so < doesn't blame ^
< doesn't have anything with VGA only a 144hz monitor with DP and HDMI and a 4K TV with HDMI. < did make a cable before for VGA to scart but the idea was to play retro games and use the CRT TV along with a special 15khz AMD driver. < actually thinks that's great for playing emulators but < thinks the resolution is too low for running an OS. < uses 2 displays 1 being 1080p or 4k and the other being the 480/576i CRT TV. < might actually put the HD 6950 in the second PCI slot under the GTX970 to use on the CRT for playing stuff like that. The special 15khz driver only exists for ATI/AMD while nvidia only outputs 31khz.
Lakka is good for that.

Re: The You Game!
< remembers making one of those VGA-to-SCART when < was 15 actually! < burned <'sself with the soldering iron, and <'s dad was impressed that < didn't scream.
Of course, in the end it didn't work… < guesses it's to do with that special driver ^ mentioned. < seems to recall just assuming that having that particular AMD card (whichever it was) would be enough, and expected the BIOS and all to come out at the right resolution and framerate.

Re: The You Game!
< found out that what ^ is saying about the bios is actually correct if ^ used a modified GPU bios. That way even the bios will show up in 15khz. The cable needs Hsync and Vsync properly combined also to make it into Csync (sounds like algebra lol). < was burned with a soldering iron numerous times also and it does hurt
EDIT: ATOM-15 is the bios modifying program.

Re: The You Game!
Well, < didn't know any of that when < was 15 and decided not to invest any further time in it. < doesn't even remember what exactly < wanted it for in the first place!
Re: The You Game!
< wouldn't blame ^ as that stuff isn't easy to find info About. < would really only find it useful for emulators. < got one of them mini NES things the day they came out and people are selling then for over twice the price but < doesn't use it as he finds PC emulation or a real NES better.

Oh god, <'s spent the whole day trying to bash out a huge chunk of <'s report. It's nowhere near done, but at the very least, <'s done with some of the more annoying sections.

< may of been sick yesterday after drinking too much :X
Re: The You Game!
< says fair play to ^^ that getting started on something annoying like that is always the hardest part
< also says fair play to ^ for admitting that as most people try blame something they ate and never admit it was the drink

Re: The You Game!
< has had a couple of busy days. Yesterday < was out of town for most of the day and today < was in town shopping and golfing.
Re: The You Game!
< thinks golfing is a good hobby to have if you have patience, it's relaxing. < needs to get out doing stuff like that again but this weather needs to subside... Eventually.. . It has to eventually right?

They cancelled Robot Wars, again.
Aiaiai, < thinks it's a real pity, the new series was just finding its feet.

< sort of meant to work on <'s presentation today, but ended up not doing anything uni-related. Whatever, it's Saint Patrick's Day!
Re: The You Game!
< just sat there doing nothing but playing the PS2 (Revolution) all day. < will install a distro on a partition on their SSD and see if it works properly. < doesn't even mind if they have to format as anything important is already backed up elsewhere or on onedrive.
Re: The You Game!
< made a few sigs just now. Even a remake of one of the sigs.
Re: The You Game!
< says nice!
< also wants to know do others controllers vibrate when they play Revolution? < tried 2 different controllers and <'s don't seem to vibrate on it but <'s nearly sure they were at the beginning of the game

Well, this is unexpected. < can't remember the last time <'s stayed up late because <'s struggled to sleep.
