Rayman 3 scores

Is 28000 in part one of LOTLD still awful? I always mess up on the hoodlum combo and even if I didn't, I can't make it back to the path of gems in time before the combo ends.
 
28.000 Points after Part 1 is far from awful, but whether it is "good" depends on what final Score you wish to obtain in LOTLD. Any idea?

If there's a hard Combo which you feel you cannot do yet, you should by all means try to break it down into easier Combos. Going for 2 smaller Combos will lose Points, but quite often it's even more costly to mess up that one big Combo. Don't be ashamed if not everything goes smoothly immediately; it will eventually. Slow and steady wins the race ;)
 
Well I know I'm not going to be able to get over 100000 just yet, but I managed to get a score of 81000 which even though it's not brilliant, it beats my previous score by about 12000.

What gets me is that huge combo in part 1 where you have to take the vortex then make it back in time and finish the hoodlums. The best I can do is renew the vortex and start the combo from the tunnel by collecting all the gems, then killing the hoodlums there and continuing backwards to collect the last few uncollected gems. I still can't make it back to the pigs in time before the combo ends either.

The main thing is I have the first Matuvu combo down and I get 9040 on it, so at least if I screw up I can go back and repeat that no problem :)

Oh no no, don't worry, it's perfectly fine. It's a little bit paradox, but as I might have stated before, main reason I like the IPG is because it allows for maximizing (even though it has appeared in plenty of "unnessecary" spots by now). But maximizing also means for example finding/revealing the SBTC-stuff and if that's not possible due to someone's I almost said something offensive scorn for this glitch then I happily go back to at least keeping it out of the Hall of Fame. As long as we don't resolve our issues for good, the Hall of Fame stays being an utter joke anyway, and it certainly deserves better (for me it's a miracle that it even made it over here).

I'm not quoting here, but DTUCC recently said something about how ridiculous it his that he as invested thousands of hours into this game but at this point doesn't even feel like inserting the CD into the Wii anymore just for having a lookaround, even though there would obviously be tons of stuff to either achieve or discover. It doesn't add up just from that perspective, but it's also not possible to invest these thousands of hours in an uncomfortable environment. That's how every job in the world works.

See, that is so wrong because I actually don't want to quit R3. It's just a question of environment for me, as I'm notoriously lazy and basically lose interest in almost anything after grinding it out for hours and hours several weeks in a row. It might be an unhealthy relationship to gaming in general :mrgreen:

In the past it has been a question of environment for me. You two guys prefer this forum as your medium, I preferred hanging out with some people on Skype, being able to talk about stuff momentarily and also throwing in some causal talk as well as looking into other games together. We three are probably just not going to find a consensus here because different people are comfortable with different means of holding a community, but it also means that I usually once in a year wake up in a morning with the Rayman-3-itch, come up with 100 ideas, only get to actually try half of them, succeeding in two and then let the rest of it slip until next year again. It's just not a good way to approach a game that requires constant attention (and the insane progress everybody has made over the past 15 years is just perfect evidence of how this game is never over).

I mean, considering how messed up I am, that day is almost guaranteed to come. I just recently made some calculations about surpassing 100k in HH part 2 (!), only to find out that we'd still be somewhat ridiculously far away from anything, but then again, same applied for 100k in TOTL part 2 in September 2013. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Also thank you guys very much. And as I said, what you have been able to do on your own over the last couple of months and years is so outstanding that it basically just proves how this game doesn't need anyone who decided to leave it behind because at least to this day, there's always been someone else. There's only so much 2 people can do, and if we still were 7 people (or heck, there's been plenty more of people prior to 2013) or managed to "link" with the speedrunning community (except for the times when RibShark showed some sympathy for the sad clowns that we are), we'd probably be steamrolling the fuck out of this game. It kind of has some parallels to actual science. Everytime you find something new, it actually raises more questions than it answers and when 3 people develop 3 combos, it would already be a huge success if even one of these people actually succeeded in one of them :P

I've done a poor job staying in contact with sfn and Mountain Goat recently but I'm sure I'll find an opportunity to maybe have some chitchat in the near future and possibly talk about this as well. I'd be curious if MandM has anything to say in this. It's also his effort that is slowly dying here, and with his first place being somewhat gone, I can't see how anything that is happening here is still working in "his favor". That's not a good way to put it, but I just have a hard time imagining he gets all his satisfaction from lonely staring at his score in the Main Menu because nobody competent (I'm excluding the people that congratulate him on scores but usually don't show up in this thread any further) has stayed to care about that. Considering how long it has been, even if the other three happen to take notice of anything here, I doubt they'd show anything but indifference, so at least that eliminates the possibility of hostility taking over this thread once more. I guess they won't be applauding neither, but I also don't believe he cares about anything else than pure results, so there shouldn't be an issue here. None of what I'm saying makes revealing the SBTC-stuff sound appealing, but then again, nothing about the state of Rayman 3 sounds appealing right now, so it works. Being somewhat 1st but actually 2nd shoudln't be appealing either for a lunatic like him (and for a change, I mean "lunatic" in the most positive way here).

But hey, we might discover that doing tons of kickflips in a weird random place where you can get stuck but also unstuck is just as silly as having infinite powerup. The supreme irony of life!

To be honest, preferring the forum is a thing of the past. As much as I wish all the disputes had never taken place, they at least had a positive aspect in that it gave all participants incentive to check the forum multiple times a day. Even though the forum was filled with verbal assaults, the occasional on-topic-posts would get noticed and be interacted with from both sides. Nowadays, asides from VERY rare spurts of life, the scoring topic - as much as it hurts to say this - has become irrelevant to progressing the game. That in turn led to me not looking at the forum as often as I used to. I even missed one of your streams after not checking on the forum for several weeks, simply because the activity had died out and there was no reason to do so.

I've always known that things like Skype are better for immediate communication, and I've long since come to regret that back then, I declined your offer to partake in any Skype conferences you guys had. Back then, the forum was active enough to where I didn't see the need for it.

Nowadays, I would gladly try to get over my IRL-shyness (lol) and participate in Skype calls with guys like you, DTUCC, MG and everyone else if it meant that WE, as a community, could get back to being productive. But alas, there's noone to really talk to anymore. Let alone anything to talk about, if people can't even find the motivation to look into the game anymore :sad:

- Jumping extends Rayman's hurtbox. If you fall perfectly into a Gem, you can take it from farther away than if you'd just run into it and thus get a tad bit more time to continue a Combo with the next item.
- Rolling would be the fastest method of moving forward if it weren't for the endlag. If you have to jump somewhere, you can be just the slightest bit quicker if you roll towards that place and then cancel the roll mid-jump.

Even putting aside "game-breaking" Glitches, there's regular movement options like these which have not been implemented into our Scoring at all (though I don't know if there's any places where those 2 in particular would be of any use). That's the worst part about all of this. There's so many things left to test out, just noone willing to put in the effort anymore.

Tl;dr: if anyone is willing to get into the game again and make new discoveries please hit me up. I'm dying to find the drive to be serious about this game again. It's not even half the fun to do it alone.

I don't remember his post exactly, but I think back then he said something along the lines of passing the big milestone of 900k being a nice achievement to go out on. I think even he may have gotten a little sick of everything that happened and lost interest in the game, too. His inactivity over the past few months (or even years by now) would certainly support that theory.

Exactly what I fear as well. I've once run the calculations, and even if you somehow managed to get everything from the start with the Slapdash up until the Green Gem in one Combo, it would still be (almost?) impossible to get a Combo worth 33k (let alone the fact that any Combo will end in the narrow tunnel with the 5 Yellow Gems because there's not a single place to do kickflips - tested it thouroughly), so the logical conclusion would be the abuse of a near-infinite repetition of flips in one place. Plus, with the difference in performance on the platforms, it might not even be doable for everyone. Oh well.
 
I'd love to get into the game properly and figure out new things about it, but in reality I suck so much at the game right now :oops2:

I guess it shows that I have no experience with it and literally my first time ever playing it was about 6 months ago. That said I really like the idea of getting good scores so I'm going to really try improve.

I have no interest in playing online anymore and most new games that come out don't interest me. I'm more of a retro gamer lately really :P

But yeah I only have 442825 which isn't good, so I'm going to take small steps, starting with breaking 500000.
 
Personally, I've never been cutout for online gaming. I tried a few times but quickly lost interest. Same here, new games don't interest me as much and I like playing older games more. There are a few exceptions though where I will play both new and old games (Mario and PMD :) )

Just remember, small steps. Take your time in figuring out the little combos first before going for the bigger ones.

I beg to differ on that, as long as there are still people who play the game and love finding new discoveries in games like you guys do, then there will always be someone who could help test out any theories you guys have. Though that's just my opinion on the matter.

I wish my computers were able to function correctly right about now...I would take you up on this offer too.
 
OK so I didn't know how this worked. I wnded up with a score of 100051. Should I have just went for a big combo from 99999? I never had enough points in a level to know what way it works :lol:
 
Well I mean I got about 110000 but the game only shows 100051 :lol:
 
Hmmmm, how weird! I wonder how that occurred? I feel it's happened to me to sometimes, just don't remember where.
 
I think that's just the way the game works. It only counts the last combo from under 100000 but I could be wrong.

Can you provide more detail about what happened, what you were doing and which world? Seems to me like the old green gem glitch but I don't know your situation.

Certainly. I was on the highway on LOTLD with 98000 and after I got a few gems the score counter went to 00051

Hmmmm....lemme guess, did this happen at the end of the highway when you go in the portal?
 
Literally right at the beginning as soon as I started collecting gems.

Thanks Ray. Is the score itself supposed to still keep going up even when the counter stops? I got another 10000 points or so after that but they never counted.

I think as Ray said, the point counter just completely stops after 100000 when you get on the highway. I just read the solution, and now my question is: once you score over 100000, in either the previous level or this level, is there no longer a point in even collecting the remaining gems for points? That's kind of what it's looking like to me. :? This happened at the end of the highway for me the last time I played.
