Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Deb's good, because it's the most popular branch base in all the Linux market, and with its documentation you'll be never lost, although, (and it's just about personal use) I don't really get the hang of it when I use it, I dunno, I became too used to compiling my own packages and manually install dependencies.
I had to work on Debian for one of my projects, it's good as I said but its mechanics sort of make me cringe cause I'm too old school for em...
If I upgrade my computer in the future (something I'll have to do in not so long), I'm affraid that I'll have to switch to Debian, some programs that I wanna use in the future were made for Deb only in mind, unfortunately... Plus I'm gonna have to use some nearly cutting edge programs and Slackware is really not about that... At least Debbie has its Testing and Unstable branches with this in mind...
Or maybe migrate to Arch/VOID, but rolling distribs seems really counter intuitive and super capitalist for me, I want something new, but also something stable...
Anyway man, stick to Debian distros, and you won't regret your time.
P.S, I once thought about Gentoo, unmatched performance and all, but trust me, a lot of issues are ahead and if you use your setup for anything casual, it is gonna be a nightmare to do anything... And it hasn't been updated for a very long time now, the packages are old so keeping up with new releases of program is borderline impossible unless you've got a dev team to assist you...

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
I might install it later then. The last time I tried to ot didn't work, but it was saying beforehand that there was missing firmware files. I'm guessing if I had just obtained those files it would have worked

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Oh yes, that's the thing with Debian. They use the Linux-libre kernel, which has a lot of firmware blobs removed. I'm not sure how easy it is to switch Debian to the normal kernel, but that's another reason for beginners to use Ubuntu or Mint instead…

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
It's been a long time since I've tried dual booting actually and after the first time I wasn't able to access Ubuntu the second time. I think I'm going to practice with booting Ubuntu and Mint in a VM on Windows first before I actually go ahead and try dual booting a Linux distro, since I only have 1-2 computers (1 of which isn't even mine, it's my dads) to use.
Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
I have a laptop and PC which I don't mind playing around with because if something fails I'll just reinstall an OS, simple
About Debian though, I wasn't aware of the different kernel even though I'm pretty sure you may have mentioned it to me before when I first joined here. I just have a lot to learn when it comes to Linux

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Actually yeah, I do seem to recall saying that somewhere on here in the not-too-distant past!
Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
I found it, I was actually having problems with my GPU which caused Ubuntu to hang on boot with artifacts, but then you suggested that Debian has a Linux-libre kernel so it was less likely to work. Since Ubuntu works now (I think Ubuntu 16 had the problem) I wonder if the situation with Debian is any better.
EDIT: It's about 300 pages back in The You Game so I wasn't gonna find it now anyway

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
I feel such a beginner whenever I hear you guys talk about these things. Shows how lazy and stupid I was back in Uni.
But I guess that shows how much more I have to learn on both programming and installing new OSes.

I'm glad you're confident to handle this sort of thing, I think you will probably learn the ropes much more quickly than I will.Steo wrote:I just have a lot to learn when it comes to Linux

And that your internet connection isn't made for rolling distribs at all.incognito wrote:Or maybe migrate to Arch/VOID, but rolling distribs seems really counter intuitive and super capitalist for me,
If that didn't change, they tell you what firmware packages are missing at the installation, so you can download them to an usb stick that you will plug to continue the installation. I find that way more convenient than installing a huge kernel by default, and manually switching to generic after the installation.PluMGMK wrote:Oh yes, that's the thing with Debian. Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
All that seems to be missing are the WiFi drivers but I have ethernet anyway, so I just skipped that. I'll see what happens soon, whether if gives me the same problem as last time.
Edit: I have to learn to type on my phone

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Fair enough. It's not as bad as what Replicant do with the WiFi firmware for Samsung phones: refuse to supply it and then don't even tell people where to get it!LoveMetal wrote:If that didn't change, they tell you what firmware packages are missing at the installation, so you can download them to an usb stick that you will plug to continue the installation. Yeah, I get it's a free software OS, but IMO that should include the freedom to install the WiFi firmware if we want. I have done it, but finding out how was more hassle than it should be really.

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Well, some people are using Windows 10, after all i seen Operating System Market Share. and it was completely 46.75%, Windows 7 was now 39.63%, which in case Windows 8.1 has probably 7.7%. So i think might know if people are using Windows 7.
At in Indonesia, some people are using Windows 7, which it was 52.09%.

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Windows 7 would be my first choice but since I couldn't get UEFI booting to work for me, I went with Windows 8.1.

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Installing Windows 8 and Vista/7 wouldn't work on my new laptop (Asus) due for GPT partition style. so it was pre-installed with Windows 10. The Edition is Home Single Language, which it cannot disable automatic updates.
I've decided disable Automatic Updates in Services (Management Console), which i set the startup type to be Disabled.
Being to know i'm about going install some other games, while i trying install Winning Eleven 8 International, i think i got issue. so it decided move to Registry Key "Wow6432Node".
Currently i'm using Windows 7 Professional x86 on Compaq Presario CQ43.

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
It can still be installed on an MBR style partition too but personally on a computer that supports UEFI, I'd much rather GPT because it's much faster at booting. When a computer doesn't support UEFI then an MBR partition can be used instead.
Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
I actually used Arch this year before switching back to Slack again.LoveMetal wrote:And that your internet connection isn't made for rolling distribs at all.incognito wrote:Or maybe migrate to Arch/VOID, but rolling distribs seems really counter intuitive and super capitalist for me,![]()
I'm more of a stable distribution guy that's all.
Personally I've done a hot partitioning with MiniTool Partition Wizard, works...PopuriAO29 wrote:Installing Windows 8 and Vista/7 wouldn't work on my new laptop (Asus) due for GPT partition style. so it was pre-installed with Windows 10. I'd rather have the huge kernel and make my own generic kernel like in Slackware rather than having to download something else from somewhere to have a stable and running system, that's counter productive, when the bombs will fall internet won't be there for that, so yeah, whenever I can stick to local I do so... That's just me though.LoveMetal wrote:If that didn't change, they tell you what firmware packages are missing at the installation, so you can download them to an usb stick that you will plug to continue the installation. Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
even then you could just download a windows downgrader to downgrade to windows 7 ultimate instead of using luinx
Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
I had to reinstall Windows 8 today and that will include all of the updates again which take over an hour. I want an OS with UEFI support, and windows 8.1 is the only decent version of Windows that supports it.
I temporarily used Windows 10 again just to use Paint3D and Rayman 2 wouldn't even work on it when I tested it. It's just so bad like

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
When typing mspaint.exe, there is Product alert in future builds (like Redstone 5). I have Paint Classic, which it uses from Redstone 1 version. so that's why Windows 10 would be removing Classic paint soon.

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8?
So, not that I needed it because I already have SLI GTX 970's, but I seen that there was no driver for the Intel HD 630 for any Windows released before Windows 10. That is absolute bullcrap and obviously Microsoft are clearly paying Intel to promote their stereotype that you "need" to use Windows 10. I tried to search for the driver just because I have iGPU enabled in my BIOS and had a yellow exclamation mark in Device manager, then I seen this in the second result
"Only windows 10 supports the new CPUs. Not only can you not get the drivers but even with a GPU the CPU has been tested to be completely unstable in windows 7 and 8."
Absolute bullcrap, if that was the case then I wouldn't be able to even use Linux since I'd "need" Windows 10. The CPU has zero stability issues whatsoever and clearly some people are just buying into Microsoft's crap.
I went to the download page for my Intel HD 630 to confirm and seen:
Really Intel? They must have given you some amount of money. Thankfully I'm not an idiot who'd buy into the crap and I decided to just do this
Nice try MS, but it looks like I win this round
