What do you think is the worst version of Rayman 2?

Post by GhostHero182 »

I'm sure people have made very similar posts here in the past, but I wanted to ask given the current opinions. I always thought the PS1 version was considered to be the worst, but now I'm seeing a lot of people say the PS2 version is worse. This interests me, as many used to say the PS2 version was the second best after the Dreamcast version. There's also the DS/3DS versions which have always drawn a mixed response, and the IOS version which nobody talks about. With that being said, what do you guys think is the worst version?

I dont really get the hate for the ps1 version

For what it is, its still very good

If i would have to choose it would probably be the ds or n64 version

Well, for starts, in the historical context, the original versions included N64, PSX, PS2, PC and DC, so that's what people were rating and comparing. Others came out later.

Among the original releases, N64, PC and DC have pretty much the same content (DC has that little extra bonus section), PS2 version had most extra content, and PSX had less, so that's why it was generally considered the worst. However, for having less content overall, it certainly had some unique content not present in other versions.

PS2 version, for all the extra content, has those annoying save points and loading times after every single section of every single level, and the frequent framerate drops. All this really breaks the pace of the game. As a result, I find myself not really wanting to replay it.

Among the three main versions (N64, PC, DC), N64 definitely has the worst graphics, and DC the best, so that's the justification for considering the N64 the worst, if you will.

iOS version is definitely the worst one. Before it was updated, there was a glitch that made it impossible to open gate when shooting the switch.
DS version is also pretty bad.
3DS version when emulated on PC plays pretty good
PS2 version when emulated is also amazing with 60fps and widescreen patches
(I still hope Ubisoft at least ports Rayman Revolution on modern platforms. No need to fully remake it but at least just enhance. Kinda how Onimusha got it)

Saying that PS1 and N64 versions are worst is kinda unfair imo because I think they are good for what it is.

PS1 version is probably the worst of the original versions (before DS and iOS) as it's missing so many levels and other things compared to the others. Yes, it adds some cool exclusives like Antitoons and Ninjaws, but the only major benefit of this version is the unlockable prototype level. Still a great game but when you've played the other versions, you miss all these things that were cut out.

I personally love Revolution for the extra content and explorable hub world. And the load times and framerate never bothered me too much.

3DS version is actually really good, I was excited to be able to play a handheld port of the Dreamcast version. Disappointingly though, Globox Village is inacessible and a glitch makes the final lum in Tomb inaccessible too.

Out of the ones I've played, I would say Revolution (the PS2 version) is the worst. Surely, it adds a lot of new content and the visuals were significantly improved, but this was all done with very little consideration for the original content. Some levels were mixed up in ways that hardly make sense, while others had their names changed and/or inverted, further adding to the confusion. What's with "the Lava Sanctuary"? And don't get me started on what a terrible excuse for a boss Grolem 13 is. He looks almost exactly like Axel, showing how little work was spent designing him, the gameplay for the fight is boring at best, and what's with his in-game description? Is he supposed to be a pirate creation, or is it a joke from the developers on how lazy they were when they recycled Axel into this? Having a baby Globox straight out give you the final mask was indeed rather anticlimactic, but Grolem 13 managed the feat of making this even worse.

The PlayStation version, on the other hand, I always found very rich and enjoyable. First of all, one needs to take into consideration the fact that the console is a lot less powerful than the other platforms the original game was released on, meaning it was no small feat to release a port like this. Therefore, it's no surprise they had to cut some of the content, but I feel it was done in a way that preserved the overall consistency of the game, unlike Revolution. What's more, it even included its fair share of new content, some of which I would have been very happy to see in the original version. Ubisoft Shanghai did more than just port the game, they came up with a very creative adaptation despite the limited resources of the console, and that's quite impressive, to say the least.

As for the worst version of Rayman 2, even though I haven't played it, I would probably say Rayman DS, due to the many bugs that made it into that version (just look at the RayWiki article, it's basically a list of technical issues).

And well, which is the best one, then? Most likely the Dreamcast version, as it improved on the original game without cutting content or adding any nonsense. There's Rayman 3D too, which is based on the Dreamcast version and takes advantage of the stereoscopic 3D display, but it appears to suffer from a rather wide range of technical issues which I doubt the 3D gimmick makes up for.

PAL cartridges on actual hardware always had bad performance and framerate issues.
NTSC version didn't suffer from those problems.

Yea, the optimization is the problem

If i got to FP, dudeenly the fps skyrocket

And, compare it to my other n64 games, like mario 64
It doesnt have nearly as many fps drops

The PS1 version of Rayman 2 was the first version of the game that I played, so I don't hate it. It's a fine adaptation. My main problem is that the controls feel very clunky compared to the other versions of the game.

Rayman 3D runs well if you overclock the CPU on a New 3DS or emulate it on a PC. Playing it on an original 3DS is fine, but there are some framerate drops, but I still wouldn't call it the worst.

I've only ever played the first level in Rayman DS on a shitty emulator, so I can't judge that one, but the gameplay looks choppy in footage.

I never noticed that, maybe because I only played it on emulator with just a keyboard?

Probably not the worst, but apparently there's a lot more technical issues than just framerate drops.

To be fair, I played it on the original PS1 controller (the one without analog sticks) so my judgement on the controls might not be the most accurate. I still think the shell riding sections control a lot worse.

I really don't like how they ruined the 1000th lum secret. You can still get it by bouncing off the spiders, but it's pretty difficult. At least they kept it in the same location unlike the PS2 version.

I just checked the wiki and apparently they retained the original secret passage on PS2, along with the pirates guarding it, but there's like nothing there? I can't imagine how puzzling that must be for a first-time player.

Hmm, what are the chances a first-time player will find it anyway? Apparently, as of a year ago, we had one member who had found it themselves (of eight polled), so I guess it's not impossible: https://raymanpc.com/forum/download/fil ... &mode=view

It also plays pretty well if you use a modded new 2DS or 3DS then set it so the game can utilise the full power of the newer CPU. The only downside is that the Foutch battle tends to crash, meaning you would have to disable the overclock just for that one level.

As for my opinion on the worst version, the PS1 version may have the worst graphics, but I still don't really class it as the worst version. I would definitely lean towards DS, since I tried to play it for like two minutes and couldn't believe how bad it was. :P

It's not really bad no. I guess it does have a couple of little issues here and there, but if you compare it to the likes of Rayman DS, it's actually much better in my opinion. I guess the only reason I don't always speak about it on a positive note is because I'm comparing it to the original Dreamcast version.
