Re: Rayman 1
This is a good observation. I remember that when I first battled Skops, it was not immediately obvious that it was that tail stings damaging him. Because you are still kinda throwing your punch at him, you just have to do it at a specific time, but that's the case with every boss...

Re: Rayman 1
Interesting theory! I wouldn't mind Rayman equipped with a Skops-tail-sting fist.
As for the large-mouthed fish, maybe defeating them is actually the easiest way to get past them, as all it takes is a well-timed punch.

Yes, "all it takes" indeed…Hunchman801 wrote: Fri Jun 11, 2021 4:40 pm As for the large-mouthed fish, maybe defeating them is actually the easiest way to get past them, as all it takes is a well-timed punch.
Reheating this old discussion (again I guess!). From working on this, I've learned a lot about how music is handled in the PC version of Rayman. Basically, the framework was all there to use a different track for every level, and there were even calls to functions to change the music at certain points (e.g. Bzzit speeding up), but those functions were empty. So, I guess they did "go to that level of Konami", given that there was no technical reason the game couldn't have used a full 50-track CD, with musical reactions to game events like on PS1/Saturn. They just decided not to on PC for some reason.technology4617 wrote: Wed Aug 06, 2014 12:08 am Also, missed this:
Well, that's admittedly true, but I don't think they'd go to that level of Konami.PluMGMK wrote:Haha yeah!technology4617 wrote:No, it bloody doesn't. It makes no sense that it would have had the original music at one point and had it taken out later, and the absurd hypothesis was only based on a playthrough Adsolution did when he was younger that had edited-in music.Although things UbiSoft did in general didn't always make sense, so that was the premise on which I based my thinking back then.

Re: Rayman 1
Build an advanced system, only for someone to use it in such a basic way that it completely defeats the purpose? That's happened to me in the past, so it's no surprise this was the case for the PC version of Rayman, too.

Davide Soliani, the creative director at Ubisoft Milan whose first ever game at Ubisoft was Rayman for the Game Boy Color, shared more sketches for that game on Twitter:

The sketches are great, I think some of them are already on the wiki, but this version of them looks so much better.

Re: Rayman 1
Lovely stuff, I've added it all to the wiki (and to your message
).
Re: Rayman 1
I was looking through some game magazine from yesteryear. But I was found some stuff on Rayman which might be pretty interesting? If it's not known. Apparently, I learnt that Sega 32X version of Rayman 1 was going to be a port of the Atari Jaguar version of all things! What was the odds of that? I know there's been some videos and such about this version a while back. But, I don't know if this is common knowledge, if not it would be nice to share with others.

Re: Rayman 1
Yet the other versions were already in development? Quite strange indeed!

Re: Rayman 1
I'm not sure if they're saying it was to be a port of the Jaguar version. They're just saying that the game is on Jaguar, and now it's being ported to 32X. Remember, the guys who wrote this most likely had no idea that the Jaguar version was any different from the others, especially since none of them were released yet.
It's hard to tell from the footage that exists: viewtopic.php?p=1416138#p1416138 – can anyone tell if things like the jump height look more like Jaguar or PS1?

Re: Rayman 1
I will probably look into the Jaguar version and demo even to compare. Now, you brought it up. It would be very interesting to see if it's similar. Then, it would still be speculation though. But since they are both catridge based games. I would think there would be some similarity between them.PluMGMK wrote: Fri Jul 30, 2021 7:16 pm I'm not sure if they're saying it was to be a port of the Jaguar version. Re: Rayman 1
I still think that prototype on the Jaguar is interesting though, with the handstand and scissor kick. It's interesting that they put this into the game and then just decided to remove it.

Re: Rayman 1
I'm going to be the one to vote for GBC.
It was the first Rayman I personally brought because my siblings usually had their own Rayman games to play. I wanted one of my own so I got this one. The music doesn't bug me and I like the graphics a lot, I find them nice and colorful for a Gameboy title! I had a lot of fun finding the cages without a guide, and those bonus games were brutal sometimes! That being said Dark Legacy is my favorite level set...
Being able to actually fight Mr. Dark was a huge plus for me as a young'un too, it was the only time they really let you fight him one on one like that, and the background was AWESOME.
The mysterious Ubi Cliffs level still remains unseen on my Gameboy though, but I think there's a vid floating around here someplace if I recall right.

Re: Rayman 1
Just watched it, and yes - it's a very nice and original fight, and the visuals are good. The music is downright awful. What is it supposed to be on GBC - 8-bit? Doesn't sound much better than the 1-bit PC speaker.ChronicTraitor wrote: Sun Aug 22, 2021 2:15 am Being able to actually fight Mr. Dark was a huge plus for me as a young'un too, it was the only time they really let you fight him one on one like that, and the background was AWESOME.

Re: Rayman 1
Yeah that's one thing I really liked about the GBC fight against Mr. Dark. You can ACTUALLY fight him, unlike with every other game. I like how Redemption took that aspect of the game and made Mr. Dark a better boss in said game.

Re: Rayman 1
Redemption's boss sequence in Candy Château is interminable and nightmarish
But that makes it all the more satisfying when you do get past it I guess!

Re: Rayman 1
Actually, you also fight Mr Dark in the original, it's just that he turns into mixtures of the previous bosses. But I agree that fighting his normal form was a great part of the GBC version.

Re: Rayman 1
Yes, the icon suggests that, and the shrink spell given by his normal form in Rayman Designer practically confirms it!
Re: Rayman 1
I may look or sound bad for saying this but I honestly never found Rayman 1 that great to play. I lose interest very easily and I get a bit bored. Dont get me wrong visually, this game is amazing as is the ost but aside from that...I dont really think its ...for me?

Re: Rayman 1
Boring? I've heard it called frustrating before, but I'm not sure if I've heard it called boring…
