Rayman 1 Definitive Installer for real DOS/Win9X or for modern tool like RCP

Post by haker120 »

I was wondering from a really looong time, I have rather big collection of Rayman 1 DOS games and NONE of them are suitable as standalone installer for Rayman, Designer (Gold), by his fans and 60 Levels. Lots of releases skip 60 Levels, the very few have but have bugged maps with instant-win, and only that rare Compilation has updated levels. Actually I posses French and German releases with 60 levels and other games but the issue is, they are not in English and don't include fixes from Compilation. And all that hassle with sound, fortunately RCP or R+ fix that for good but require us to have preinstalled games. Just today I got to know our fellow, greatly skilled modder PluMGMK made soundtrack per level for real DOS/Win9X so I am curuous, could we, as in I'll try to modify bin/cue to make it to work? The easiest part is to push files from Compilation to another image, for me that is.

I think space may be a problem for CD so maybe DVD image as the point is to make all-in-1 installer and music loaded from HDD/SSD/and so on on modern systems and tpls-tsr CD for legacy ones. And like Rayman Plus or Rayman Control Panel all languages, for me personally English is enough but all in one sounds great. :D

So essentially, something like an RCP that works on old OSes? I could probably get behind that! Not sure about the compilation DVD image. It'd be cool for sure, but this kind of redistribution would not really be legal… :oops2:

Well, that's an unfortunate outcome with legality, but something like RCP for win9X (honestly 9X as DOS isn't multitasking OS however once installed from 9X could be adapted to DOS :D), then maybe even less-hassle-installer would be really appreciated. :D I know 'technically' I could run DOSBOX under win9X but that defeats the purpose of native running apps. :) In the worst case scenario I'd be happy even with emulation on legacy machine as long as it serves its purpose I think. :P

No no, I agree that emulation on a legacy machine would be a total waste of resources! I think a cut-down version of RCP that could run on Win9x (or maybe even Win32s?) would be cool. It could also run on modern systems (even if the UI wouldn't look very modern) and decide whether or not Dosbox is needed by checking what OS version it's running on.

A cool idea, but not sure if anyone will have the dedication to see it through :oops2:

I would love to see that happen. :) Unfortunately I have no knowledge how to do that. :(
