Re: Unpopular opinions on Rayman

Hmm… I'm embarrassed to say I never gave it much thought! :oops2: I guess I just kinda assumed that it's a very badly-maintained vessel, which fits in with the theme of the Pirates using bandaids (Sparadraps) to stick everything together.

Polokus does give Rayman "maximum energy", which means he refills his health bar, but yes, it could also imply imbuing him with some force that causes the evil stronghold to break apart as he passes through. It's not just what Polokus has given him either: unlike his first time on the ship, he has now been reinforced with all of his powers by Ly, and is carrying most of the energy of the Heart of the World with him (although for some reason 9.4% of it is found on the Ship itself :fou2:).

That's a good view. I like it. 8)

Well in that case, I’m guessing it’s this same force that prevents Rayman from getting hurt from all the falling debris and exploding things everywhere as slides through the ship, yet somehow doesn’t protect him from all the other lethal things he passes. :P

As always, when nothing makes sense, you can always use the ol' cop-out: a wizard Polokus/Bubble-Dreamer did it.

(Ok it is kinda funny how Polokus can be used as a canon patcher)

I think his design was originally intended as the Rayman2 version of the wizard, so yeah :hap:

Also yeah, it's like Rayman has a power-up that causes him to smash through bits of the Prison Ship and make them explode while not damaging him at all. There's a powerup like that in SuperTux and I know it must correspond to some kind of mushroom in Mario but I don't know enough about Mario to say which one exactly :oops2:

The Mega Mushroom or Super Star should be the Mario equivalent.

The Mega Mushroom I feel is more accurate, it can smash through things like pipes too along with everything else.

If theu just moved one or two of the levels from it to another section...

Mr Sax' Hullabaloo only has 1 level, Ging Heights has 2, take a stage from BH and put it there.

DaveRattlehead wrote: Sun Jan 14, 2024 12:58 pm Here's another unpopular opinion... I wouldn't say I hate it, but I'm a bit disappointed with The Prison Ship in Rayman 2. I like this level, but I don't know, I somehow expected this level to be harder, just like The Tower of Leptys in Rayman 3.
The ship itself looks pretty cool, and my main disappointment was that you couldn't really explore any of it, as almost all of the level is spent either sliding down or flying the shell. I would have loved for more stops like the one where you fight the Ninja Henchman.
Master wrote: Mon Jan 15, 2024 11:16 pm That is a narrative point that never really seemed to be explained. Granted it's fairly dramatic and cool from a visual standpoint, but the lack of reasoning behind the Prison Ship seemingly falling apart as your traverse is indeed strange.
I haven't played the game in a very long time, but my impression was that there were a bunch of pirate cannons firing at Rayman, who had been spotted onboard, and that they kept missing, destroying parts of the ship and conveniently opening passageways for Rayman. But maybe there's more I don't remember?

That's about right.

I vastly prefer the Prison Ship over TOTL in terms of presentation... TOTL is just such a gross, bland level to me aesthetically. Generic dark, muddy stone level. The only part (not including the flying section) I think looks cool at all is the conveyer belt sequence with the lightning. They could've done so much better.

I kinda liked the first huge chamber in Part 2, where you climb to the top of the tower. But not the the rest of that section.

What's really disappointing about the Tower of the Leptys is that most of the time, the level could be taking place absolutely anywhere, with no indication whatsoever that you're scaling a tower. Alternating inside and outside sections (with beautiful views :coeur:) would have made it so much better!

I made this exact point before, I completely agree! Imagine part of the level being an ascent up the exterior of the tower where you can see the clouds far above or below you, with tricky platforming and actual cliffs (with a paluchard to help you up)...

So many missed opportunities

TOTL pretty much was forgettable, probably for me one of the weaker levels overall in Rayman 3. The only part that immediately jumps out to me is that long shaft with the unnecessary amount of yellow cans, and not for good reason.

The only time we can really see a glimpse of the tower in-game is at the very beginning of the level, no? Otherwise for all we know this could just be a tunnel/cavern level located somewhere else in the desert, given the references to the Knaaren in the second area.

Yes, and that's pretty much the coolest part of the level!

If I remember correctly, the Prison Ship is already partially in bad condition before the pirates start firing cannons at Rayman when he slides through the ship (you can see flames, lava...). Maybe Rayman caused some destruction before? It's probably a grey area of the plot, but hey, I don't think it's that big of an inconsistency if you compare it to what they did in RO and RL

I agree that they could have made it a bit longer, with a bit more exploration. It's visually spectacular, ngl, but I don't know, I just have the feeling it's... Empty. And now that I think about it (maybe another unpopular opinion?), I'd have loved to see that cutscene from Rayman Revolution where he frees the prisoners in the original version.

I could never fully make sense of the lava on the ship. I kinda assumed that it was used to power it somehow, but why is it leaking everywhere? An attack on the ship would indeed explain this.

And yes, the cutscene with the prisoners would have been a nice addition. Or even better, maybe a playable version of it instead.

Maybe this has been mentioned before, and maybe it's not an unpopular opinion, but:

I think the guardians of the sanctuaries in R2 look goofy as hell. And it's not even their design, but their animation... why are they swinging their arms around like they're walking, when they are clearly flying? :oops2:
