Actually, wasn't there a theory that pirates had visited the Glade of Dreams before? I can't remember the entire explanation, but basically this is said because in the Tomb of the Ancients you can see pirates in tombs, which makes no sense unless they were there before :fou:

Ah I hadn't heard of that specific one before, but I do like the idea! I know the concept of Robo-Pirates still being in the Glade is definitely quite popular in general. Their concepts were so iconic the fandom really doesn't want to let them go, haha

As simple as Rayman's plot may be, in the end Rayman 2 is the game with more lore, hence why people may have more interest in pirates (myself included :lol:). It's always nice to have new enemies, but a ‘last dance’ against the pirates would be cool. After all, Razorbeard survived, right? :)

Yeah Rayman 2's ending was probably the most open-ended of them all. And yet it seems every other game besides Rayman 2 has had their villains return in some capacity (Mr Dark came back in Mini, Andre came back in Hoodlums Revenge, Magician became the Dark Teensies).

I suppose you could say R3 GBA counts as their return, but given that game's intent to be a retelling of Rayman 2 that was bodged into a mash of R2 and R3, I suppose it's down to the observer on whether that counts as genuine or not.

There's a big missed opportunity in Rayman 2 regarding combat with the pirates. While a great platformer, Rayman 3 showed how much there was to improve with its fighting mechanics, and with the pirates such a diverse army of dangerous foes, there's great potential for extended combat sequences with them.

Revolution tried something with the battles against whole battalions of standard pirates, but those were quite boring (like most things in Revolution). Were the pirates to brought back for a final reckoning, that's an aspect I would like to see expanded upon.

Yeah! Rayman 2 is my jam, I'd really hope a new instalment draws heavily from it or at least attempts to go for that classic fairy-tale aura, with the menacing pirates, sacred powers and mythical world.

The game has many 1 vs 1s which is probably due to limitations on the number of actors they could have, but those little duels always felt intense and personal, rather than exalting the player as a demigod tearing their way through hoards of enemies. But the game was intended to be forgiving so you don't get that sense of accomplishment.

At the moment the gaming world has these extremes of indulging in the all-powerful hero fantasy, and brutally punishing Soulslike games. I'm an advocate for games that help bring out a casual player's fighting spirit, and recognize just how much incredible skill is within them. The Rayman series could be a great candidate for that.

The simplicity of Rayman 2's combat is probably due to technical limitations (it wasn't even the year 2000!) and because, after all, it's a game made for everyone. Also, my feeling is that they lowered the difficulty a lot coming from a game as complicated as Rayman 1 was. Maybe those 1v1 duels are more epic and personal than they really are because they made a good lore in Rayman 2, but I highly doubt that was the developers' intention.

I agree that there is a (dangerous, I must say) tendency for many games to be soulslike. But you know the problem? Only FromSoftware knows the formula for making a good soulsgame, and very few studios copied that formula properly. The result? Dozens of games that try to copy that style and end up failing in the attempt.

Dave I think you are spot on about every point! When it comes to difficulty, the original Devil May Cry is one of my favourites. This game kept pushing me to improve, so that I eventually beat it on the hardest difficulty setting which is pretty much soulslike in terms of how punishing it is (the mode is called "Dante Must Die"...)

But keeping to Rayman 2, I have a rather specific question. In Iron Hills (not every version) Rayman gets to ride a shell in the area with the robotic dinosaur (sorry I don't know it's proper name). At the start of this area Rayman used the box to get inside the building, and since its walls are sloped, the shell can go up towards that entrance (but I crashed when I tried it). I assume the game won't let Rayman enter this building on the shell, but I theorized that if it WERE possible, he could used the jump or boost to reach the inaccessible room where some Globox babies are. I'm sure someone else must have tried that?

This is my greatest regret with reverse-engineering the Rayman games and working on tools like Raymap - the magic is gone for me :(

That said, it's still quite cool to see how everything is put together too, so that makes up for it a little bit. :)
That, and all the fun trivia that I can tell people playing the games ("Each of these Hoodlums is named after a famous (ex-)footballer!" or "See that cage? That's David Cage. And that one's Nicolas Cage.").

Well I spent a minute or so thinking about it, and maybe there is a possibility there. A certain type of modding, where players are encouraged to try crazy experiments and will actually be rewarded with new locations, using the level's textures to seamlessly extend the map.

Maybe that takes too much effort. But I'm just imagining playing that same game I love, but with new secrets hidden away in the caves of the great bay, or in the bowels of the sanctuary of fire of stone... Imagine if there were secret parts of the prison ship and you could actually rescue a ton of prisoners like in the cut scene! And there was also that area in the Canopy you duel a grenadier, always just out of reach of a helicopter glide...

Funny you should mention the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire, it's without a doubt the level that stimulated my imagination the most!

And who knows, were the game to be remade, whether by Ubi or as a fangame, this would be a great occasion to revisit such locations and expand on the players' imagination!
