I actually would choose red velvet over chocolate. Simply because I love cream cheese frosting and most of the time that’s what I find on a red velvet cake!

I’ve never had a red velvet cake but I looked it and it ingredients up and it sounds SO GOOD!!! The vinegar must be rather interesting, though

It seems like a tradition, but here's another thing prepared for my birthday... This is the flan de turrón I've mentioned several times!

Yup, but flan de turrón (crème caramel with torrone) is much better :P
Also, it's a bit more "special" because turrón (torrone) is only sold in common supermarkets by the end of the year for Christmas, so unless you buy a lot and keep some of it for the rest of the year, or you go to a special shop, you wouldn't make this cake, let's say, in July

Ah, got lucky with your birthday then! Did you or somebody else make it, or did you buy it?

You don’t really taste the vinegar tbh. A more interesting ingredient that’s seen in cake is mayonnaise!

I’ve already have several in the time I made that post. I honestly prefer the actual sponge to the icing lol

How does that even work? :mefiant:
…Like seriously, i can’t even think of anything like that, i’m just imagining biting into a cake and tasting that mayonnaise-y flavor, eugh :beurk:
Though, a lot of cakes use salt, don’t they? And you don’t usually feel it, so i’m probably just overreacting at this point :oops2:

Vinegar is often used to make the cake fluffy. In the right amount, you don't notice it and you get great results. I really hate vinegar, but in these cases it's fine.
However, mayonnaise... If I remember correctly, it can substitute butter in the recipe (if you want to make cookies, for example), but I've never seen that in a real case

Well, i could imagine vinegar being used like that, but mayo seems like a odd ingredient :mefiant:

I mean, that does sound kind of interesting… Mayonnaise doesn’t really have the texture of butter and is a bit salty, so how does it taste in comparison to something made with butter? :pardon: And mayo cookies don’t sound very great, either :oops2:

I imagine mayo being used in something like chocolate cake. You don't really taste it in the end, regardless if used in the right amount.

It depends on what mayo you use. If you use a strong garlic mayo, no way in hell.

I thought it was a cardinal sin earlier eating a taco with potatoes, curry chicken, garlic butter and sriracha at lunch today

From doing research around, it seems mayo is used more for texture and makes a cake more moist. I know there are other ingredients in mayo (like maybe mustard and lemon juice), but it's really just an emulsion of oil and eggs isn't it? I think like the vinegar you won't really taste the mayo (I certainly can't think of any standard mayo that can overpower a chocolate flavor, for example).

:ouin: I miss cake so much man... I've been on this strict diet where I am cutting sweets out entirely, but every day I dream of a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting
