The authentic Ryemanni experience :noel:

Funny how so many of the things he creates are confused with "that", it also happened with the demo design of the Pink Poles in Rayman Redemption

Ngl I was off-putted the moment Hunch said 'penis' and then on top of that you mentioned a lot of the things Rye made are associated with it. Oh lord.

I'll watch it later when my mind is clearer, I would like to know the concept behind his games.

I remember he also feared people would use Rayman ReDesigner to make "penile" levels, and I think some of the early Picture City pirate statues designs in Redemption were... well, not very family/YouTube-friendly. :noelnoir:
That and some of the pictures he used to create especially on Twitter since then were... You know what, I'd rather forget and I'm glad I never found those again... :beurk:

...So have some actual F L E S H instead :bad:

Weren't you put off by seeing huge features in a video just a few posts before? Do you discriminate on their size or shape? :P

Not gonna lie tho, that's clearly the most inaccurate part of this drawing!

To talk a bit about something other than those features (even if they're indeed very big :hehe: ), I'm finally coming back to this game for a playthrough, and it's a pain at times! :oops2:
It's still a very good fangame with a lot of content tho... but some parts like the Desert of Despair ( :beurk: ) are a reminder why it's not the size of the features that matters but how you use them!... :noel:

I even found a glitch involving a checkpoint in the level Floating Rocks... This specific checkpoint with the scrolling section basically dooms you to losing all of your lives since the clock doesn't remove the scrolling while still spawning Rayman next to it, thus making you bite the dust off-camera!

...Now I'll let you come up with all the immature/dirty puns involving many words featured in this post, with some extras you can find if you're French. :hap:

Well, this game looks pretty unforgiving at times! And while we complain about the flying rings in Redemption, they seem to be much worse in this one. I don't think I could play it without going crazy, so it's great that you're recording this playthrough.

If I recall in this game, Rayman is unable to hang on ledges right? That's probably the main cause of me dying when I played and it really bugged me because I would keep forgetting that wasn't an ability and just fall towards nothing and have Rayman's pieces fly everywhere.

Currently have reached the Freezy Freezer in my recordings and did 100 % of the previous worlds! :mryellow: I'm in pain. :noelnoir:

Personally, I think they feel more consistent to use in RDMRT than the Pink Rings in Redemption since the time frame for the highest jump is much more obvious and reliable to pull off (it's basically at the moment you see Rayman reaching the top height while swinging on the ring, while it's before that moment in Redemption).
It took me so getting used to, but now I can use those consistently while I'm never sure of what I'm doing with those in Redemption/ReDesigner...
At least I'm good at using the Gold Rings now.

And it is indeed one of my biggest gripes with this game and something that makes it feel even more like a downgrade compared to Rayman 1. I just can't count how many times I fell to my death or missed some secrets because of that! :pascontent:
And that's so weird when the game got some returning "obscure" features such as the grappling fist grabbing lives or even the infinite helicopter glide from games succeeding Rayman 1... and yet, you can't hang, you can't climb, you can't grimace, you need to charge your fist for an eternity before it's powered-up to take out some otherwise unbreakable obstacles, and the controls are just so unreliable at times especially when punching while jumping! :mefiant:

Hunchman801 wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 9:22 pm I don't think I could play it without going crazy, so it's great that you're recording this playthrough.
...And speaking of going crazy, to me, the absolute worst thing in this game is the backtracking! Trust me, after playing this, you will never complain about mandatory backtracking in Rayman 1 ever again! I insist, because it pales in comparison to the repetition in this game!
Basically, unless you miraculously found every Cage and Collectible before unlocking the Green Clouds in the Fiery Fort (which is nearly impossible before buying the Cage and Item Locators considering the level design in some maps), you'll have to replay like 95% of the stages you've already played and in their entirety! And even with a miracle, there are still like ten stages you must repeat due to the unlockable key and clouds!
You can't even skip the sections where you already found everything despite the fact that you have a skip button for bosses (unless you're in the first fight with the Dark Magician which "skips you" to the title screen :hap: )!

And all of this tedious backtracking through already tedious levels asking for a lot of patience is only made worse by the lack of a world map/warp room... thus making you go through EVERY big hub world again to get to the earliest and furthest worlds!... :grrrrrr:
And as if the game didn't make you backtrack enough if you want to get to the final level (and have a good supply of lives since the game is stingy with them before you get the alien key + green clouds thus making you Game Over and redo EVERYTHING since your last save! :confus:), you're also forced to play through the Maze of Memories before the second Dark Magician boss level...!
And what is the Maze of Memories you might ask...? Well, kids, it's an incredibly long level made of sections from each of the T E N worlds you already went through, of course! And NOTHING changes, except the background/mist effects, the music and the placement of Cages (better not miss one of those kiddos, or you're doing this entire thing AGAIN :grrr: )!
SO, even assuming you were absolutely perfect, found everything, didn't Game Over and only had to replay a few levels, it still means that there are some sublevels that are mandatory to play T H R E E times! What kind of overly ridiculous padding is that!? Come on, there are already TWELVE worlds, was any of this necessary!? :lestfou:

See? It's so ridiculous that I had to write a review again!
And yes, I still find RDMRT good as a fangame (especially from the earlier days of Rayman unofficial content), and complaining is pointless as Ryemanni was just a teen when making this and returning to it to fix it (or even remake it) would be a waste of time for the most part because the game's skeleton is so fundamentally flawed that it can't really be salvaged... But hey, it always feels good to let off all of that rage. :fou:
Anyway, still a better "do every thing again a million times for 100%" game than Crash Bandicoot 4. :noel:

Yeah, it's obvious that you like the game, otherwise why would you play it again like that? I suppose it's also good to be critical about the stuff we like. :bad:

Alright I must confess, everyone!... I'm only replaying it for the views (all... 53 of them! :noel:), I'm so sorry guys, I'm such a sellout! I'm gonna do an apology video right now! *starts playing a ukulele* :hap:
Joke aside, I just completed it again! All I got to do is to work on uploading the videos over time now. :)

As tedious as it was to go through some of the later levels and mainly the Dark Stronghold (especially that stupid pointless Maze! :mefiant:), the second Dark Magician boss felt like a blast once you figure it out and the game overall was still fun! Like Rayman 1, it's a far more enjoyable experience once you memorize enough of the game.
And regardless of the gameplay issues, it still holds up visually and I can't see anything to dislike about this gem of a soundtrack! :mryellow:
I'll probably revisit it again in the future! But with many separate sessions as going through so many worlds in almost one go is exhausting. :oops2:
But yeah... the existence of Redemption and ReDesigner made it age very poorly! It really changed the standards for 2D Rayman fangames of this scale.

I also discovered that the Bad Rayman and Mr Dark skins actually got different unlock requirements:
-Bad Rayman only needs you to beat the final boss (and so get all the Electoons and beat every level...).
-Mr Dark requires to have gathered every collectible (and so beat the game as well, since the last one is found in the last level and you can't leave before beating the boss).

Heh. Maybe i should do a walkthrough video of this myself too. For funsies of course! :P

Until you memorize the game, you have to contend with having Rayman's parts flying everywhere.
I wonder why Rye didn't just use the death animation in R1 where he just splits into electoon and flies up.

Of course! Who would play a game for anything other than fun? :noel:
*Looks at the clickbait "Rayman.exe" videos of the Spooky Raymansion games on YouTube* OH... :o
In all seriousness, it can be worth a go if you're willing to put up with all the flaws! :mryellow:

I honestly love how funny it looks!
Besides him probably having troubles at getting the Electoons right (they don't even physically appear in the game despite being so important), he clearly did attempt to do a few unique things with the game's visuals and sounds rather than 100% rehashing Rayman 1, and I can respect that!
Though I wouldn't have minded if he rehashed all of the classic controls instead :noelnoir:

EDIT: I've finally completed my playthrough! Coincidentally, it took me 15 parts just like Rayman 1 on PC, though most of them are about twice as long... So it's quite a testament to how long this game really is, especially when it comes to the painful backtracking. :hap:

It was definitely fun to revisit this classic fangame even despite the many rough edges! :mryellow:

If you ever wondered how the Bad/Dark Rayman and Mr Dark skins looked in action, here's a full showcase of all the animations for the playable characters in The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror! This include the unique sprites of their projectiles when you have the Gold, Fire or Ice Fist! :mryellow:

I also found this weird seemingly unused frame in the files :paranormal:

All of the bosses in Dark Magician's Reign of Terror now have a dedicated page on Rayfanpedia! The articles just need more screenshots and some extra touches and we can already call them "complete"!

Making them has helped me realize a few interesting things, like the fact that Ryemanni recycled Multi Minion into Mr Dark's ball form attack in Redemption, Savage Minion is a reskinned Mad Drummer, both of Dark Magician's battles send you to the title screen when you "flee" them, the Redemption red UFOs and Space Mama's True Boss Rush space suit are nods to the extra-terrestrials in RDMRT, or that the Heart of the Storm is a recolor of the bubble clowns' water drops from Rayman 1...
That's right...
This game's final boss...
The progenitor of the Dark Magician who easily oppressed the Valley and captured Rayman...
The core of the evil tempest which corrupted the Great Protoon in one lightning bolt and threatened the entire world...
is just a bubble projectile from a regular clown enemy in R1!
  :fou:

That's a nice one, but it feels a bit different from the original, more like an Antitoon version of Mr Dark actually:
