I think you probably could have opened another TTY (CTRL + SHIFT + Fn), then just logged in with root there and ran "passwd <your username>" and set a new one. Then you could have just went back to your display manager and logged in. You would have set a root password when you installed it, and also a user password. This would be changing your user password. It depends though, you could have broken security stuff like PAM if stuff was messed with and then it would also fail to authenticate a login.- Couldn't login to my Ubuntu VM with my password for some strange reason. Spent hours researching how to fix it, but in the end, I had to scrap it and start over (good thing i didn't lose much of anything). I wonder if it had anything to do with me changing the root password....if I recall it was among the last things i did before I shut it down a few days ago.ops2:
