Re: What phone do you have?
Oh yeah, I forgot about that crap. Oh the nerve.
Re: What phone do you have?
I agree that they are the kings when it comes to how optimised their software is, but I believe that's also because they lock everything down. They are making software for only specific hardware (even Mac only has so many hardware configurations vs other desktops / laptops), while Android is very sporadic across several different types of hardware while having to be somewhat universal. It will likely never reach anywhere near the levels of Apple software optimisation due to this. I still feel that their products are extremely overpriced for the hardware you get, and that it's ridiculous how "closed-off" iOS feels compared to Android.Master wrote: Sat Aug 17, 2024 12:49 am Yeah, there's a lot to rightfully criticise Apple on, and I'd never go for their stuff. But I think there's still some good software and standards that they adhere to.
Pity their products are badly made and they had to be given the regulatory boot to open up their repair processes.

Re: What phone do you have?
Oh without a doubt, I think the point I was trying to get across was more that some of the criticism I see lobbed towards Apple seems more rooted in tribalism without at least understanding some of Apple's strengths (or at least perceived benefits to those who do use those devices). And I'd rather folks critique Apple from a more balanced viewpoint, because tribalism ends up with you not really paying attention to the shortfalls of your own "side" (and I'll be honest, having used Android smartphones for like a decade now, I've definitely felt some over the years. Software support being a major irritant causing phones to go out of service a lot quicker than they ought to being a particular complaint. Or the myriad of bloat from many manufacturers, the BS addon UIs, a lot of the shenanigans involving rooting...).
Apple have done some, however few, things that I do at least appreciate. The switch from Intel to Apple Silicon for instance, I've been getting incredibly annoyed at the low battery life and extreme heat that many laptops have even to this day. From what I've seen of Apple Silicon laptops, they seem to perform a lot cooler and with a reasonably similar level of performance with greater battery life. I've noticed since Apple's had success with their Silicon, there's been a greater push to normalise the use of ARM chips in laptops in general, and it's something I hope will succeed because I'd love to have laptops that are more efficient and also don't burn my thighs xD
To reinforce my overall point though, I'm not Apple fan by any stretch. For all the bullshit hardware locking, the walled-gardening, the exploitative measures they take on those who develop for their platform. Yeah they ought to get slapped down for shit like that, and I hope they continue to do so. But at the same time, I think credit ought to be given where due, bullshit should be called out regardless of what platform, and it's not good to just hate for the sake of hating. Criticise based on what they're doing, not out of a sense of tribalism. I think this is an attitude that's gonna be called out a fair amount in the PC space in the coming months cause it looks like both AMD and Intel have fucked up (though it seems like Intel have fucked up more), and both deserve to be called out for it. Don't just hate an "opposite side," call em all out.

Re: What phone do you have?
I couldn't have said it better, myself, Master. You get a lot of problematic people who will just throw out there "Well, um actually you shouldn't have bought brand X, you should have went with brand Y instead.", while brand Y has done their fair share of bullshittery.
These companies need to be called out, we still need competition in the space, because it's important to keep one company from having a huge monopoly.
This is why we need more people like GamersNexus, Louis Rossmann, and even the likes of the EEV Blog to call companies out.
To add to the reparability of products, I find it rather upsetting when you have all these companies claiming to go green, and give some spiel about what they are doing for the environment, but yet they continuously make their products more disposable and throw-away than before. What's green about adding more e-waste to the environment? In fact that's the main reason why I hate the current stance on EVs, is because everyone is trying to push these things so hard, and yet they're just as bad to repair if not worse than some of our phones. Creating more waste due to the lack of ports or reparability we keep seeing across the board. And in the case for these cars, you have batteries that cost more than the car itself does to replace it and that not something people can just easily afford willy nilly either. It feels like adding more overall disposable waste out there. Sadly even the ICE vehicles are getting ridiculous as well but so far those battery pack costs are insanity on the repair side of things.
Hell, let's go back to Apple who've been serializing components making it more difficult to swap simple things that needn't be complex, making things increasingly more impossible to repair in their phones and devices, we know this is anti-repair by design. These practices are showing more and more across the board on things. There even was an article that talked about some car having the fucking headlights be like that, and you couldn't use them properly anymore because of it.
Stupid issues like this are definitely not just limited to smart phones and Apple products overall anymore, sadly...

What was this iPhone joke, exactly?Fifo wrote: Sat Aug 17, 2024 10:53 pm How could I forget? I was such an intolerable kid back then! Honestly, I cringe at my past self.

Re: What phone do you have?
So I assume they were joking about this new iPhone concept for April fools and you took it too seriously?
Re: What phone do you have?
Simply put, yes, that’s how it was. Well, I wasn’t exactly mature back then! We all have our share of immaturity, though, so I guess I can just look back and laugh about it these days.

Re: What phone do you have?
Funny, I was immature when I started for the exact opposite reason!
Re: What phone do you have?
So about a year ago, I got an iPhone 11 Pro. I really like it, it's very snappy and fast. While I'm not really a fan of iPhones because of their lack of customizability, I had to get one because of a certain app called "Find my iPhone" with which my parents could track where I was which Android didn't have so yeah, lol. Also customizability-wise, there are only a few features I couldn't find on my iPhone which I could on my Android, so I guess it's not that bad of a compromise after all, plus the camera is also really good and can capture photos in great detail.

Samsung Galaxy A55
Re: What phone do you have?
I've had an Oppo Find X5 Pro for about a year and a half now. The battery isn't nearly as good as it was when I got it, and I did get it second hand also. I'm wondering if I should just get the battery replaced since it's not a bad phone and the only other things wrong are some scratches on the screen edges from zip pockets.
Re: What phone do you have?
I have an iPhone 16 Pro Max myself and love it a lot.

Re: What phone do you have?
Heh, must’ve been quite pricey eh?
Re: What phone do you have?
Haha, it’s fine. I had nothing else to spend the cash on so I decided to treat myself with a nice phone

Re: What phone do you have?
That’s nice! I’ll definitely have this kinda spare cash assuming I never move out my home.
Re: What phone do you have?
Also, the main reason is that my mother needed a larger phone (she still had a non-Plus/Max iPhone) and instead of getting herself a shiny new one she decided to get me one instead (knowing I make better use of them than her) and inherit my brother’s 12 Pro Max, while my brother got my 15 Pro Max.
Re: What phone do you have?
Even though I used to always bash Apple, I honestly wouldn't mind one of these haha. I still want to get a decent iPad with at least an M1 at some stage, I just feel it will be useful for many reasons. Still kind of a shame they can't just run MacOS even though they would be capable of it, but I guess that's to separate a Mac from an iPad in the first place.
