RayGamer99 wrote: Sat May 24, 2025 10:08 pm Earthworm Jim is one of the surprisingly many original IPs that sprang up during the 90s but never took off for long, which is a shame, because this was a really great series! The first game, aptly titled Earthworm Jim, has really fun 2D platformer/run and gun gameplay, hilarious character designs and personalities (ranging from the nefarious Professor Monkey-for-a-Head to the beautiful Princess What's-Her-Name), and one of the best video game soundtracks the Genesis has to offer! :D

There's a wide variety of levels to explore, from the underwater world of Down the Tubes - which was patrolled by super muscular cats and had you fight Bob the Killer Goldfish (all you had to do to beat him was touch him to knock him off his pedestal and break his fishbowl, leaving him flopping on the ground) - to the bungee-jumping boss fight against humanoid mucus in Snot a Problem! In between most worlds, you'd even race against an anthropomorphic crow in a yellow spacesuit! You'll even launch a cow into space at the start of the game, only for it to land on the very princess you spent the entire game trying to get to in the game's ending. It's unsatisfying, sure, but it's really funny nonetheless! This was one of those games that knew it was totally absurd and turned it up to 11.

The first game was so successful that it got a sequel just a year afterwards and an animated cartoon show (and a hysterical one, at that) in the same year! So why didn't this GROOVY series take off like others did? Well, Jim's first foray into 3D was pretty bad, and his last game (as of writing this) was a cheap Game Boy Color sequel. Since then, Interplay Entertainment has left him on the scrap heap and has, to my knowledge, silently cancelled "Earthworm Jim 4," leaving the fate of our hero in a super-suit unknown but not looking good. :(

So yeah, Earthworm Jim, despite being a childhood favorite of mine, hasn't come back in two decades, and I highly doubt that he will return anytime soon. But until he does, I'll still be listening to one of the many banger songs that came from the game that started it all. :nostalgic:

Earthworm Jim (Special Edition) - New Junk City
Ah yeah, while I haven't played the games yet, I'm pretty familiar with the first's soundtracks already! Very good stuff, especially for the time! It's a shame that the HD version of the first game didn't perfectly live up to them from what I heard (and it's also missing some content from what I was told...).
Speaking of which, here's one I'm quite familiar with as I heard about its level's removal from the SNES version! :hehe:
Earthworm Jim: Special Edition - Intestinal Distress

Ah, I remember the whole cow thing from a video by a French YouTuber (L'Ermite Moderne) when he spoke of some of the "dumbest" endings in gaming history! I love it honestly, it's genuinely comedic genius!

And yes, I heard many times that Earthworm Jim 3D was bad, it's typically one of the franchises that didn't survive the transition to 3D, sadly... :?
Seems like the fourth game is stuck in stuck in vaporware hell with the Intellivision Amico... I know that this reference is really beating the deadest of dead horses as a Rayman fan, but I guess you could indeed say: "See you in Earthworm Jim 4!" :fou:

Hopefully he'll have a triumphant return someday! At least we still have a few rather recent versions even if they're not all the best and the first game has joined the GOG preservation program!
And if people were crazy enough to bring back Bubsy and Big Rigs in this day and age, then I'm sure we'll eventually manage to bring the worm back from the dirt! :mryellow: (yes, Big Rigs just got an even worse Steam port, YES you actually just read that, and Y E S its existence makes me want to erase humanity :noelnoir: )

At this point, I don't even think that thing is coming out, nor Earthworm Jim 4 with it. Honestly, it's not very often you see a gaming console that isn't a Nintendo thing, another PlayStation, or another Xbox.

At this point, they've brought back stuff like Croc: Legend of the Gobbos and Kao the Kangaroo (the latter of which I've shown some interest in), so how come they still haven't brought Jim - and Banjo-Kazooie, but that's a whole other can 'o worms (no pun intended) - back yet?

Anyway, here's a song from Jim's second game (which also had a great soundtrack)!

I like the tribal feel of this one, it really amplifies the sense of danger this song brings! Anyhow...

Yup, getting into the console market when you're none of these brands has become a suicidal move since the mid-2000s, it just won't work anymore unlike in the 70s-90s where everyone and everything could have a desperate shot at penetrating the gaming market...

Sadly, only time will tell...
Just for one example, I personally had to wait for decades before I saw the return of my childhood Saturn game PowerSlave/Exhumed with a remaster, which came out literally 26 years after the original's release in 1996! Nothing official for this one game... in 26 years... and only so to get an enhanced version and not the originally planned second game!
It's crazy to think that by the time some things we enjoyed will get to return, some of us will already be in the grave! 💀

It’s unfortunate I struggled so much with the space stages of SA2 back then.

I've always loved the Mario series' airship themes, so it was a welcome surprise when Wonder remixed Super Mario Maker's SMB1 airship tune!

Mariah Carey - Fantasy

This song had played a lot around me when I was a kid, so I've always clung to it  Mariah's got a voice of an angel, and this is just a banging track in general :hap:

Despite how much better and more iconic the Japanese version of Sonic CD's music is, I still really like how the US did on this zone! :D
