Re: Birthdays and ages

Post by Mortamon Saturn »

To be fair, there are many birthdays that aren't even acknowledged because a great part of the total userbase has gone inactive, and more than half of the current members have either 0 or roughly ~1-5 messages posted by them (if you check the memberlist and sort it by messages), so little to no one are familiar with these people. :?

CosmicStrider wrote: Mon Jun 09, 2025 1:19 am (Um...Is this getting a bit lengthy? Should we move this to another thread? :oops2: )
How about we continue there then?: General Pokémon Thread
I'll gladly reprise the Pokémon conversation with you all from there when I can! :mryellow: (So I can whine a few more years hours about why modern Pokémon totally and objectively 100% sucks and why you should never ever give your time and money ever Rayman 2 Forever again to the Pokémon Company or Niantic because muh little opinion matters so much more than billions of other humans' :hap: )

And there's also a Zelda topic which I plan to eventually join! :mryellow:

ChronicTraitor wrote: Sun Jun 08, 2025 2:29 am I was not expecting a JOJO reference, though it's funny that you bring that up; I've been meaning to try Heritage of the Future on our Dreamcast lately! I'll admit that I'm...okay at fighting games and between my siblings, I'm usually the last to jump into things, but I picked out a good chunk of the roster to try out when I get to it. Those being Hol Horse, Iggy, DIO/Shadow DIO, Kakyoin, and the cooler Kakyoin. 8)

Never mind that Kakyoin worked against and was the undoing to someone who can control time, it's not like my username has anything to do with betraying time or anything. It can definitely be retroactively applied to it as one of many meanings/inspirations, though.

Originally, ChronicTraitor was named as such to work in tandem with CosmicStrider, and came about because of Robot Unicorn Attack 2.
Everyone in our school was playing it at lunch, and I was on Team Inferno before switching sides. I used most of the Chronoscopic set and the team change prompt ended with "You traitor!". I liked how ChronicTraitor sounded, so I used it as my internet name later on when I needed one.

It can also apply to anything/anyone referring to time or betrayal. Shadow's Chaos Control and doing Hero things on Dark routes has Doom's Eye call him a traitor, Aeon from Castlevania Judgment is basically the embodiment of the earlier games' timers, Cyprien is outright called a traitor halfway through Cyprien's Chronicles, and loosely connected are Ape Escape and Blinx, both games that have to do with racing against time and in Blinx's case, using time to proceed. I tend to pick characters that aren't exactly trustworthy, crazy, or the total opposites to what Cosmic picks.

Learning about your username's backstory was really enlightening. It makes sense now! (I thought it sounded like a Digimon or a Yugioh card. :oops2:)

It's nice that you at least got Ocarina of Time (or another copy of it, from the sounds of things?) to make up for Sword's shortcomings! I don't have the copy I grew up with anymore, but the music and the memories of it always gets me a little teary-eyed. :nostalgic: At least I still have Smash64, so I can always remember it that way. I like most of the stages, but Hyrule Castle and Dreamland are the best stages to me. Gourmet Race is my fight song in 64 as someone who mains Kirby. I also play Ness, Luigi, and Link equally as effectively, but Kirby is my go-to main. (Yes, even in Melee.)

That's enough out of me though, before we hijack another thread with Sonic song references, Jojokes, username lore drops and Smash mains.
CosmicStrider wrote: Sun Jun 08, 2025 3:45 am Also, funny you mentioned JOJO there. In the Dreamcast version of Jojo Heritage Of The Future, I managed to unlock Young Joseph myself, which was a miracle considering I had to blindly run through Old Joseph's story in Jojo's Venture to get him. I'd never even played Old Joseph so I totally winged it, but somehow managed. (Also found out I could wreck CPUs with Jotaro by just approaching them and using the light punch button. I figured typical fighting game knowledge was USELESS in this game, and tossing all of that out the window did work...) Young Joseph's a total blast to play, was totally worth cheesing the heck outta Iced with Old Joseph's uppercut juggle. (I would not have passed him without that.) And punching straight through a decisive hit against DIO on the final round. Yeah, unlocking Young Joseph cut it that close!
You expected a Sonic reference, but it was me... YOUR MOM! GO TO YOUR BEDROOM, DIO, YOU'RE GROUNDED, YOU UNFUNNY CHILD! :grrr:
*Despite having vampire blood and the power of The World stand-ing with him, DIO did get grounded for a very long time... Eventually, he stopped thinking.*

I wish I could have played Heritage for the Future, it's a JoJo game I've been wanting for a long time!... B-but... the... the evil retro gaming prices... :ouin:
And I'll admit, despite being a SoulCalibur enthusiast (and a tiny bit of a Tekken fan), I myself don't go beyond being "okay" at fighting games! :oops2:

Oh gosh, last time I've heard of Robot Unicorn Attack 2, it was Benzaie's "In 5 seconds" video on it from 2013... And I'm really not sure I should suggest that video to anyone nowadays whether you speak French or not... :oops2:

And it's very interesting to learn about your usernames' origins too, I always wondered what kind of specific reference could lead someone to name themselves a "Traitor", and "chronically" so, no less! :mryellow:
But be wary of the Traitor's Requiem... "「KING CRIMSON」! ゴゴゴゴ- . . . . . . . . . . -and this, Bucciarati, was the recipe to cure cancer... But you won't make it out of here alive to tell anyone! :mefiant: "

And that, is indeed yet another reason I realized why I shouldn't have picked a "Mon" name! :noelnoir:

Oh, I wish so much this wasn't a joke about Sword's textures and horrifically ugly Wild Area, and I actually got a N64 copy of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask... :nostalgic:
Because funnily enough, despite these two (and especially the second one) being my top 2 Zeldas and some of my favourite video games of all time (with MM being second in the top 3, between DQVIII and Rayman 1/Redemption! :coeur: ), I never owned a 64 copy of them... or a Nintendo 64 to begin with!
I got into them through the legendary Collector's Edition on GameCube (which I never owned either, but my childhood best friend used to lend his console to me, and then I purchased much later that obscure measly motion gaming-infested [ :beurk: ] bootleg of the GameCube which they call the "WEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! :D " :hap: )!
And all the other copies I actually own are the 3DS remakes (or "demake" for Majora's case... :bad: ) with the collector edition of MM3D (Skull Kid figure included! :proud: ), MM on the Wii's Virtual Cconsole, and the Wii U VC versions of both... I think you can guess the reason why again... T-the... the evil retro prices!
And (yes, an "And" again, because I never know when to shut my mouth :P ) if you wanna get even more teary-eyed (for... whatever reason :paranormal: :mefiant: ), our beloved Remi Gazel did his own rendition of the Ocarina of Time theme, which is beautiful beyond words! :nostalgic: :nostalgic: :nostalgic:

Didn't grew up with Smash 64 unlike Melee and Brawl, but I did get to try it on the Virtual Console of the Wii in my Wii U's Wii menu... Wiiception. :noel:
Dated compared to the sequels, but definitely a very nice game especially for the time! :) Obviously, I like to use links!... :fou:

CosmicStrider wrote: Sun Jun 08, 2025 3:45 am I caught that master plan reference, Mortamon! :hehe: And the rest too.

Hahaha, I had a pretty good laugh all across the post.

Funny thing is, I can totally agree with Pokémon going downhill. I stopped at Alpha Sapphire...And I've been playing since Pokémon BLUE. It was like...Blue, (I need a new copy, my OG copy died from my favorite glitchy Flareon, LONG STORY.) Silver, Stadium 1/2, Ruby, Gale of Darkness, (I gotta get back to it...) Mystery Dungeon Blue, Platinum, Soul Silver, Mystery Dungeon Sky, Battle Revolution, Y, Super Mystery Dungeon, (Did NOT like that one, slogged through it anyways to get my money's worth...) and finally Alpha Sapphire. Kinda just...Stopped after that.

Plot twist, I was not kill after my Blue game went kaput. I bought Fire Red (Which was 140$!) on the GBA for my DSI. But I really don't Pokémon like I used to. It's kinda hard to find the motivation when you gotta start from scratch, instead of grinding like crazy and catching loads of Mons and then the game glitching out and handing you 7 level 100's...Blue. :paranormal:

...But I did assemble a team for a Blue redo someday, and for Fire Red too. And I bothered to restart Soul Silver and Gale Of Darkness, so I must care even a little. And I still need to recomplete Soul Silver. I just gotta get past the elite four/champ...Maybe I should put it in my DS slot? :D

But yeah, as for Pokémon nowadays? Man. I really don't know what to say that hasn't been said already. It's so...Stiff. But I mean, it does excel in some places, but really suffers in other places...

And hey! Mortamon's not an edgy username to me. I think it's really cool your name's a reference to Dragon's Quest! I had the 3rd one on the Gameboy a long, LONG time ago. Don't know what ever happened to it.
Was probably sold behind kid me's back. :?

Right, don't wanna get off topic. if I missed any birthdays, it's probably because I was asleep. Happy Birthday!
Glad that my silliness was at least a bit funny! :mryellow:

Obviously, I'll reprise the Pokémon stuff more in-depth in another topic, but I can tell that we both explored many games of the series, although I have yet to play a few interesting ones like Gale of Darkness, Colosseum or the Stadiums! I used to be super interested in finding a copy of Super Mystery Dungeon as I assumed it would be much better than the flawed Gates to Infinity which I did skip (with the demo pestering me every 2.5 seconds of downgraded gameplay to tell me that I should "take a rest from playing so much" because Nerdtendo really thinks kids these days lack the basic ability to use their brain! :hap: ), but from your testimony to Jonster, it seems I actually dodged a bullet there! :oops2:

Gosh, was it the save battery dying? Now the save system of all of my GBC copies' died which broke my heart for Gold in which I went so far (while my Silver's battery died just a few days after my parents bought a cheap copy at the same time as Gold, so thanks for nothing! :noel: ), but ironically, Blue may be the last one that still survived (the power of MissingNo must be holding it together! :noel: ) while the only copy I could find of FireRed had broken saves one day after I got it!... :noelnoir: At least, it wasn't even nearly 140$, holy heck!
And yeah it's difficult to be motivated when losing so much, I got a similar feeling from my old dead saves and just from the fact I can't even import most of my Pokémon to the new generations...

Overall, from my experience with SwSh even after 6th/7th gen, besides the game's cities being bigger now + the Wild Area, the evolved presentation for the gym leaders, and some debatable "quality-of-life improvements" that mostly make the games even more ridiculously easier than before, I really can't put my finger on anything that has been done better now, aside from calming down a bit on harassing you with constant hand-holding & cutscenes like in 7th gen... Almost everything else, even down to things like exploration or the story, is such a regression to me...

I'm happy it doesn't sound bad to you! :mryellow:
I envy your childhood for that, DQ III's GBC remake was a gem and it still has features which weren't even brought back in the HD-2D remake! I wish it would have been released in Europe, and same goes for the other Dragon "Warrior"s, we didn't get anything until the first Monsters (which was so obscure in France little to nobody was aware of it and the franchise back then), and until DQVIII and DQMJ/3DPokémonButActuallyGood with the latter introducing me to the series!
And yeah, probably what happened to it... Like how my parents sold my PS1 for 20€ (OOOH, this hurts so much now! :hap: ) and discarded almost all of my GBC boxes and manuals because "cArDboArD bAd!!"... :mefiant:

The Jonster wrote: Sun Jun 08, 2025 3:57 am Out of all the generations of Pokemon games I've played, I've only played the first 3 gens, then just dropped off and switched to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. I would like to give the games from Gens 4 and 5 ago (especially 5....one, because as Master told me sometime ago it was the last series of games that felt fluid and complete, and two, because some of my favorite Pokemon lines come from this particular generation!). In fact if my sister did not get me Shield or Violet, I wouldn't have bothered at all.
Mortamon Saturn wrote: Sat Jun 07, 2025 11:36 pm There's no acceptable excuse for Pokémon, the most successful media franchise on Earth, to be so lazy and far behind!
I think Mario would like to have a word on that. :P
Fifth gen is definitely the most worth it nowadays in my eyes for nearly all possible reasons, the fun dynamic gameplay of the modern titles (but without any of their distracting 1-2-times gimmicks) along a mountain of very solid content! Especially so when it actually had two adventures instead of the usual "please buy our exact same game (with like two changes) 3/4 times" scam! :hap:
As for 4th gen, it's what got me back into Pokémon after the GBC games (which I discovered in the first place thanks to my cousin gifting me her Pokémon Red), and I'd say it's mostly worth it now for HGSS (still the games with the most content: two regions for the price of one + the usual extra stuff since 3rd gen like the Battle Tower! :) ), very good stuff with its many features and the Pokémon following you around!
DPP are mainly interesting if you're looking for some extra good Pokémon lore/mythology/wordbuilding and a hecking great soundtrack, and Platinum can still be quite enjoyable... although they really feel sluuuuuggiiiiish to play nowadays (especially DP) which can hold back the experience at times... Pray you never have to deal with a high-level Blissey... :noelnoir:
And if you dare to go beyond, personally, I think Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are pretty underrated, and SM/USUM can be a nice refreshing modern experience *while still retaining all of the essential content* if you ever get sick of the old formula (just do yourself a favor and only play ONE 7th gen game, or you'll get dead sick of THEIR formula once you see the 10,000 identical cutscenes that will hold you hostage! :pascontent: )

Don't you mean VerboseArio? He's the one brother that likes words! :fou2:
And while I barely play Mario now (not even Brothership despite being first and foremost a Mario & Luigi guy), at least they still appear to be high-quality games with some actually fun and thoughtful new gimmicks, and some fine graphics for the Switch (the amount of detail I saw in videos just for Mario or Luigi's overalls in Luigi's Mansion 3 for example was darn impressive!). Even if the formula barely evolved and they keep recycling the same bland ideas all the time (mainly for their worlds and villains), it's still consistently very good!... Well, aside from some spin-offs, from what I heard! :hap:

Alright, it's REALLY Crash 4 About Time that we move all of this to the relevant topics, shall we? :oops2:

Mortamon Saturn wrote: Sat Jun 07, 2025 11:36 pm Well, now you know somebody kind of does since late 2017, and was one of the many Rayman impersonators we have in this community! :P
I just realized I missed a HUGE opportunity to call them "Rayman fakers", and then we would have got that one Sonic Adventure 2 scene with every Rayman-named user arguing over who's the real faker!

I'll join the Pokémon and Zelda thread soon™, so no more topic hijacking! I actually wanted to react to the latter a year ago and prepared a personal mini-retrospective of all the games, but my life was going way too badly then and so I dropped the thing... ...so, time to fix that soon! :noel:
(And gosh, that reminds me I really must return to the Ratchet & Clank one too! :oops2: )
