Rayman2 was the first Rayman game I played, and it felt completely different from the other Rayman games. Rayman3 was fun, but a lot more silly than Rayman2, as I've never considered Rayman2 to be silly, just to be a sort of 'cartoon-based revolution story'. To be completely honest, I've always considered Rayman2 to be quite serious. About four years after I purchased Rayman2 for the Dreamcast, I purchased Rayman Revolution for the PS2. I loved the new 'level select' mode (that is a level with entrances to other levels, obviously), I loved the extended bits, and loved the surprises such as the Robot Factory, different parts of different levels being placed in a different level, but the most surprising boss was the boss of the fourth mask. Grolem1 or something he was called, wasn't he?
