Why?
Well, here is the pattern for apocalypse predictions so far:
1984
2000 - 16 years later
2012 - 12 years later

So, 8 years is the next step, making 2020.

< also has a theory on the progression of what the predictions are:
1984: Super-communists take over the world
2000: All technology crashes and the world goes haywire from being so dependent on it
2012: The world ends with only two people surviving to restart civilisation
2020: The world ends, leaving no-one behind?
