Well, you're not supposed to double post, you're just supposed to edit your post.

And just for those who missed it because of the rapid-posts:

Really great music! :D
That's the final battle, right?
I can already picture it, an intense battle with that slow-ish music in the background... very emotional, movie-ish like you said. ;)

I want this game to be great, so I feel I have to tell you this:
Your melodies are great in general, but you should work on the drums and beats. They seem, at times, out of sync. Sometimes the beats don't really fit in to the melodies either.
Note that this is my subjective opinion, and it's how I see it.

I have an idea For Where Rayman Fights Dark Rayman.
They Should be on Top of a Stormy Castle. (Preferably the Bloody Castle i was Talking to You about)

But This is just my Take on it,It is your Call Buddy :D

If i'm completely honest, i don't like that idea, it's... kind of old. :?
If i'd make a fangame for some/anything, i'd make it like FFVII, like fighting at the end of the world or something.
And if you lose, big game over, the world get's destroyed and everyone is dead. (like in TLOZ: Majora's Mask)
Just because i can and it's epic.

Thanks again everyone! :D

@Rsandee: You're kind of on the right track.

@alfman:
I know, but it's a problem that's extremely hard to fix. I don't have any software to fix it precisely with, so I just have to all at once re-record the whole drum track and have it pre-quantized the best I can.

@wariofan:
Actually, if you look at the "trailer" (it's either further back on this thread, or you could look at my uploads) at the beginning it actually shows a scene of Dark Rayman raising the clouds. That's the cutscene that includes the "thunder rise" soundtrack.

How the battle phases go:

The level before the battle is called "Darklands (Wip)". You walk into his mountainside fort, and you're on the interior of the mountain. From there you walk along his suspended platforms (deep crevasse below) and through his machinery (like test life-support systems for people/experiments). Basically Dark Rayman is taking the souls from people who he imprisoned in liquid cryogenics (so their souls remain) to feed off them for himself so he gets their power. Then as you're walking, you walk onto one platform which suddenly descends like an elevator and you find yourself in a large octagon room with stairs and different levels. That's when you hear "heartbeat" drum beats and the camera pans around Rayman, then suddenly Dark Rayman lands right in front of him and punches Rayman and he goes sliding halfway across the room and hits a wall.

That's where you get back up and have a standard ray-fight (phase one). Then, you see Raygirl come on Moskette with a golden fist which she tosses and lands on the high-platform. You both then race for it. If he gets it, there's a WiP alternate ending in the works, or he kills you and you start over. If you get it,it goes into a scene where he tackles you, he steels it from you, he charges up a shot while still on the ground with you, misses you, and it hits the wall and blasts it open. Raygirl and Moskette are watching. Suddenly , Dark Rayman throws you way into the outside outside. He looks up, super wall-jumps up to Raygirl and Moskette at lightning speed, and imprisons them in a floating platform with a cell on the bottom for them, then chases after you. This is where phase two starts.

You are both outside, and you're running away from Dark Rayman as he's flying toward you, hurling golden fist shots at you from above, which kill you if you touch them (the damage is like Rayman 2 style), and when they hit the ground, make explosions with shockwaves you need to jump over. The camera is also facing backwards, so the camera is moving backwards, always looking at Rayman's face. The hurling shots are in-time with the phase 2 music. Eventually, you reach the base of the huge pillar, where you get cornered, and Dark Rayman fires one more shot (it goes into a side-view) and it blasts you in slow-motion onto the base of the pillar. You then see him fly upwards and into the swirling clouds (they rotate around the pillar).

So now, you have to climb the pillar (Dark Pillar Ascent) with the rain pouring down, and you find things such as the floating helicopter platforms like in Rayman 2, and cloud platforms, and waterfalls, and more. The cool part about this, is that the clouds are a realistic height from the ground, so as you get higher, the 3D volumetric clouds get closer, and eventually you break through the top (right near the top) and the rain and music is gone.

All you can hear is the wind blowing deeply across the clear dawn sky. Them when you reach the top (the top of the pillar is in the trailer), it plays the Phase three music. You see Dark Rayman staring off the edge of his pillar platform (just look at something like the background of part nine), you run up to him saying things like "You coward! Can't you see what you're doing??" Then you see him charge up his shot in both hands (it's all green instead of all gold, the shots, and his hands are silver), and he fires them backwards, and you dodge. As the battle begins, the music keeps playing. Basically like the first battle, except he has super-fists, and the pillar can be destroyed a bit with each shot he shoots. Then once you damage him enough, you see Moskito rushing in from behind you to help. You jump on Moskito, and Dark Rayman smirks, looks down, and does the trailer cutscene, with the "Thunder Intro" music.

The then hops on his prison-platform and you fight in phase four, with phase four music. It's an epic aerial battle between the two layers of clouds, where lightning randomly strikes in between in columns. You both shoot rays off of your flying things, yours Moskito, his, his prison platform thing. Then, once you've depleted his health, you're supposed to fly towards him and it goes in the cutscene and has "The Final Blow" music playing. It shows you charging towards Dark Rayman, charging up with cool camera angles focused on your hand's power, and it's a button prompt to hold down and let go the fire button to charge up and shoot, and if done successfully, you can hear the energy blast hit sound in the soundtrack actually, and you blast it right into his face, sending him spinning down, falling and twisting and flipping backwards until he falls through the bottom cloud layer. While you see him falling (from Rayman's point of view, right above his head looking down), it does the piano-glissando heard in the same Final Blow soundtrack.

Then after all that, you see the sun rays come up from dawn and pierce through the clouds. You see the floating platform, and the "Freedom" music starts playing. You fly to it, and it goes into the calm music part as you open the cage and let Raygirl and Moskette out, who then fly along side you. Then, when the music comes back into the fast-paced stuff, you see huge one-eyed robots rising up (kind of like the ones in Monsters VS Aliens), and gameplay returns. You can Raygirl each charge up at the same time when you hold down the fire button in each other's hands, and shoot "mega" shots at the robot defenses and they blow up with each shot as one after the next rises, each gets taken down with you two at once, to show that you're unbeatable. Then when the music fades off, it shows you flying towards the sunrise.

That's when it does the exit Dream Forest cutscene which I haven't thought out too well yet.

May I ask a question out of curiosity? How do you program all of these battles and objects? Do you hook C++ ( or another programming language ) code to the objects in the Sandbox 2 editor or... ?

I do most of the things in a visual coding system called "flowgraphs". Here's an example of what Rayman's current "move and shoot" system, which I'll upload a video soon for, looks like:

Image

It's basically hooking visually coded XML into objects. Of course I pre-did Rayman's animations though in 3Ds Max. :P

Uaaargh. I just spent the last few hours lookin' at every single page in this thread, reading through nearly every single post. And geez, I"m glad I did, if I just posted without doing that I'd have missed a TON.

And I gotta say this is some mighty ambitious stuff you got goin' on here. I'm afraid before any other of my commentary, however, I'm gonna have to take these quotes I found scattered across the thread in all those pages 'cause I have stuff to say on them. Some of which may be important. Unfortunately, there are a lot, and I have no idea how long posts are allowed to be on this forum(I'm pretty new here). As well as a lot of other things I feel I must say not directly related to all of those quotes. So uhhh. I apologize in advance for how ridiculously long this might turn out. D:

I think I'll start with this.

Code: Select all

Rayman felt a grab on his hand as he struggled sightlessly against the cold freezing water. Suddenly he was pulled up out of the freezing water and back onto the ice with a splash and crack. His vision was dazed and the first thing he saw was a red foot. As he lay on his front coughing and sneezing, he looked up and saw something incredible.

The hand holding his was nearly identical to his except in colour, and the creature that had saved him was... she was nearly identical to him! The hand he was holding onto since he was pulled up from the water was violet, and she wore hues of red, pink, and purple, and she had kind of like the Magician's but brown.

She stared at him wide-eyed and awed, and he realized he was doing the same, then shook his head. "Y... y-you saved me!"

"My name's Raygirl... wh... I thought I was the only one like this! Until... this..."

"H-hi... and I'm Rayman." Rayman let go of her hand and stood up and rubbed his neck.

"Are there more? Are there more of us where you come from... Rayman?" Raygirl said in a very curious voice.

"Um... I mean no, I thought I was the only one too!"

"Oh, well I'm still stunned, I never thought this would happen!" Raygirl blushed shyly which made Rayman grin.

"Nice to meat you too... Raygirl." He cocked his head to the side for a second and smiled. Raygirl made a strange motion with her hands trying to think of something to say.

"I... guess this means... we'll be travelling together for now." Raygirl said hopefully. There was a pause. "How did you get all the way out here? I heard a loud rumble and boom from the mountain and I saw lava rushing and steaming and freezing as I saw you running. I thought you were just another victim, but you outran that so fast, I knew it meant something, so I ran to help as soon as I could and knew it was safe!"

"Wow, thanks a lot, I guess it's a deal!" He held out his hand, and Raygirl joined his hand, then they let go. "The reason I'm here, is because... well... I'll tell you at a better time so we're all felling good for now, for now-"

"Please let me come with you Rayman, It's so lonely here, the only people I ever see are the rare travelers, and I'm too scared to show my face!"

"Okay, I could really use the help, and the company of course! Sure you can come, but I'll warn you, this is not your everyday adventure!"
Okay. Now I'm gonna be trying my best to withhold my initial impression of "Agh! Fan characters! No!" which usually accompanies things like this. It's an outlook that I'd rather like to change, since it's rather unfair to have such a biased view towards fan characters when some of them are actually quite enjoyable. That's another issue, though, and I just thought I'd mention it in a way of apology if anything I say sounds a bit harsh.

The dialogue seems kind of... fake. I mean, yeah, it is, all things considered. But really what I mean is that it doesn't flow very well and it feels a little forced or unbelievable. An important thing is to keep Rayman in character as well as keeping the dialogue itself in a fashion that would actually be said out loud. There's gotta be proper buildup for outbursts, and all in all...

I think that you're going to need an editor or someone to loosen up the 'stiff' feeling and make it more believable. From what I can tell, you've got some cutscenes and story points planned out, and that's great and all—but in all reality, I think you need someone (or multiple people) to help you shape up the story and interactions between characters in a way that progresses the story.
alfman wrote:Also, you should maybe make a thread about what the exact story would be, and people could come with their own ideas and maybe improve it ;)
I'm all for something like this. Or at the very least, if you're looking for serious feedback, have some kind of system where you can 'interview' or 'review' people who would like to help in the story, and if you think they're competent enough and aren't likely to blab the whole thing and can actually help, give them the info on the story so they can help you out. I guess what I'm trying to say is get something like a beta reader, which is generally how something in the writing biz would go with something like this; you have someone else to discuss the story and general ideas with for a second opinion, so that you can have feedback but still not have it released to everyone, either. Or I guess you could compare it to beta testing on a video game, except at this point it'd be more for the story and layout than the actual gameplay itself. You're focusing a lot on the graphics and 3D models, which is great and all, but I'd highly suggest making sure that the story/layout/plot itself is solid before building all of it. That way, you won't build something that you'll have to completely change later, or have a level that doesn't fit in, or something.

So you'd share stuff with the beta-tester-people/whatever you wanna call them anywhere from the story to cutscenes to the layout/objective of a level itself. And so on, so forth.
RayFan9876 wrote:Anyone who wants do do voice acting can do voice acting, I just need a sample phrase like "hello, my name is [username]" in the desired voice. :) Don't be freaked out by it; technically Skype's 100x more revealing than a sentence.
Ooooh, that sounds fun... unfortunately, I have a very low commitment level to things, and if I offered to do this I wouldn't know if I'd follow through or not. :? Urgh, sometimes I really don't like my aversion to responsibility... makes it hard to go through with things I'd actually be INTERESTED in. I'm not really a voice actor anyways, but it'd still be fun to contribute somehow, even if just a background character talking or an enemy squeaking or SOMETHING... lol.

Ah yeah. And more seriously here... you're gonna want to do voice acting tryouts, or at least say which characters are available. At the very least, how many male roles there are/how many female roles there are, and stuff. Otherwise people won't know what they're signing up for. XD

At one point you said this(in regards to characters from R1-R2 showing up):
RayFan9876 wrote:Pretty much everyone shows up at one time or another throughout plus some newbies.
But you've also talked about scrapping old characters like Tarayzan/Joe(I have no problems with this, LOL. His level really pissed me off!)/etc because of their limblessness and that Rayman is supposed to be unique.

Soooo I guess what I'm getting at here, instead of something incredibly complicated like maybe you were expecting, is that a character list would be nice. Which characters are important, which ones just show up in the background or just once or twice, enemies, that kind of thing. Especially which ones would need voice acting of some kind or another(doesn't necessarily have to be 'voices' either, like squeaks and grunts and growls and stuff from enemies could count too).
RayFan9876 wrote: And believe me, this won't be "just a fan-game" once I'm done with it. I WILL get it published by (hopefully Ubisoft) and I WILL become a Crytek staff member. And I mean it, and nothing can stop me from achieving this goal. :)
Oh boy. I'm... not gonna comment on that right now, I'm afraid, because I tend to be highly skeptical and critical when it comes to these things, and I honestly don't have the energy or motivation to go off on that right now. So, moving on for now...

Shame that I won't be able to play this or even get a chance to, since I'm on a Mac and it was mentioned at some point that Mac wouldn't be compatible. Unless that new engine/whatever you say you're going to try and make or use or whatever when you learn how in a couple years can support it. Oh well... no way to tell now, I guess.

I also read somewhere(too lazy to go back and get quote now since I didn't make note of it before... blargh) that you had Raygirl13(I think it was her? I think I saw some references to her or stuff by her on dA sometimes) doing some art or something for the game. My first thought was "Dammit!". Why? Because I was thinking that'd be kind of fun to do! XD Especially on character design, which is something I'm interested in.

And then I read on a more recent post that you don't actually have a set design for Raygirl in your game yet. If that's still true...

Can I maybe kinda sorta try and design her or other characters in the story before you model them? ;w;

Gah... I just had to put it out there. Like I said before, I unfortunately have a really unpredictable level of commitment, and it's nearly impossible for me to tell beforehand how long I'll be able to express interest in the project or even participate in it. Even so... even if it isn't long-term on my part, I think it'd be fun to try and contribute or help in my own way. I've always wanted to try and design a character that's going to be used in a game or story or whatever(I'm a real nut for concept art and character design, 'specially that stuff you can typically 'unlock' as a bonus in video games), and this seems like a good opportunity.

Yeaaaahhhhh...... uh. I'm gonna go now. Sorry for a writer-artist-thing's rantings and such. At the very least, I'll be trying to keep updated on this for a while(I wonder how long it'll be, with my inconsistency?) if nothing else.

And er... I think I heard mentions sometimes that you have a dA account. If you don't mind my asking, what is it? I'm curious to see what you've done and maybe there's other stuff on the projects there and... errgh. I'm starting to run out of energy for typing... I think I've been at this text box for an hour, hah. XD So I promise, I really AM done with this post now... hopefully not too much of a bother to read or nothin'.

Yeah, my username is RayFan9876 everywhere. :)

Also a few things.

With the dialog, I'm scrapping heavy dialog like that. I've gotten much better at writing since then anyhow, but I'm not having heavy dialog.

Yes I was doing some artwork with Raygirl13 on this.

There's always alternatives, but this is the easiest so far.

C++ is for programming core engine elements. Lua is for making entity bases. XML expands and varies off those bases. Flash and Action Script control the UI and GUI.

Then there's flowgraphs. They can do almost anything you can think of if you know how to use them to your full advantage.
