Your Computers

Post by Haruka »

Another topic for the Off-Topic.

Do you have a computer? If yes, how many? It is pre-bought, made by root or pre-bought but modified? If it is by root, when it was built? Which hardware is inside the computer? Post a photo if you like.

We've got a Windows 7 desktop (which I rarely use :P ) and I've got a Macbook Pro. I'm amazed nothing has gone wrong with either of them yet.
Until recently, we had to cope with a Windows 95 that my dad refused to replace - it gradually got slower and slower until it finally BSOD'd spectacularly. I always had a soft spot for it, but in all honesty, we're better off without the thing.

Oh, man, you all have such lovely computers!

Well, my collection isn't so great. Most of my computers are old.

This is my desktop, which sits next to me handling the fine job of dust collecting at the moment. I've build it myself from spare parts some years ago, so I could have a computer in my room:
  • Intel Pentium ||| Coppermine CPU @ 1000 Mhz
  • 512 MB Kingston SD RAM
  • Nvidia Geforce 5200 video card, I don't know how much video RAM it has, but my guess is 256 MB
  • Creative Soundblaster sound card ( with my headphones it actually plays music beautifully )
  • 40 GB hard drive ( I don't remember the brand )
  • ASUS CUSL2-C Black Pearl motherboard
  • Ubuntu Linux 10.04
This computer actually is still surprisingly usable for many tasks. It's still good for listening to music, making documents for school, browsing the internet a bit, and editing pictures with not a very big resolution. I also played video games with it in the past, like Rayman games and the PC version of Beyond Good & Evil, but Windows crashed and I wasn't able to fix it. This is also the computer where I learned to program in C and write basic HTML on. Good times, good times.

I also have this beautiful old Mac which my uncle gave me as a present. It's the most beautiful computer I've ever seen, but I've got no screen for it :( :

The laptop I take to school and use as my main websurfing station is a crappy one from the days that Windows Vista was just out. It's from ASUS, but it's really wearing off after two years of loyal service and the time is coming for me to buy a new one.

I'm saving up for a Macbook. Those are such beautiful machinery, they're easy to use, and they're also good to be creative and make things.

No. I used to enjoy working with the intermediate releases like 8.10, 9.04, and so on. But nowadays, when I have much less time to experiment, I really enjoy the stability of the LTS releases like 10.04 and 8.04.

What OS does it use? Windows will certainly eat such a low powered netbook alive, but a lighter Linux distribution will probably give you a comfortable experience on it. ;)

Why? Although everyone is hyping Windows 7, I wonder what exactly is so good about it. It's security system is still weak, it's still as heavy, it still becomes slower and slower as you use it, the interface has been made more complicated for no appearant reason ( seriously, what was wrong with the old taskbar? ), it still has crappy built-in applications, etcetera...

And no, I don't just want you to go get a Mac or to install Linux. I'm just saying that Windows 7 is overhyped and you should put that well earned money into something that's actually worth it.

The price doesn't matter that much if it's cracked :P, and you need windows 7 if you want to play DirectX 10 or 11 Games.
And what i really like about it is the way you can just grab a window and drag it to the corner and it will automatically resize to fit half of the screen ;)

I have two:
A slow old computer i don't use anymore, if i remember well the stats were...
Windows XP proffesional 2002 SP 3
224 MB RAM
VistaMizer installed
Intel Celeron CPU 2.26 Ghz
Video Card: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP 32MB

It got slower with the time, so i had to format all of it.
And a laptop i got as a reward in school.
Windows XP Profesional 2002 SP 3
Intel Celeron Dual Core CPU T3100
1.90 GHz
3 GB RAM
Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family Graphics Card.
PhoenixBIOS 4.0
250GB Hard drive.

Quite good for me, but the graphics card seems to ruin it all, anyone recommends something new for it? Because it seems to be also getting slower.

@Superlol: I'm afraid that you can't upgrade the graphics card of a laptop. Those things are integrated into the motherboard of the machine, you see. And if that isn't a problem already, laptops don't have normal PCI-express xN slots, but weird mini-PCI(-express) slots for expansion card and it's often already hard to get inside the laptop for replacing a hard drive or a memory bank.
The price doesn't matter that much if it's cracked :P, and you need windows 7 if you want to play DirectX 10 or 11 Games.
Doesn't Windows recognize a cracked version and shut itself down accordingly? And with cracked versions you also never know if it's malware free.

And DirectX 10 and 11 based applications will run fine on Windows Vista as well. ;)

Can't Windows Vista do that too?
