I mean, if you really hate new things that bad, go and stay in the past and play the same games over and over again. Even better, just stick with Nintendo. They've been putting out the same crap with different names over and over for the last two decades :V
I'm not living in the past, I just happen to like games that are traditional and games that embrace their, errrm, origins. It comes as no surprise that although I hated the idea of Oddworld being in 3D, I actually quite liked
Munch's Oddysee, because it retained the same DNA as the first two games (but not being 2D it didn't quite hit the mark with some people, but that's understandable).
I'm the same with music. When I buy an album by a certain band or musician, I fully expect that album to sound like that band or musician and not sound like something that could have been made by anyone. I doubt there's any Duran Duran fans on here, but their recent album was a 'return-to-roots' effort and it turned out to be their best album in over twenty years, because it actually sounded like Duran Duran. It was what all the fans had been waiting twenty years for them to do. The album currently holds a score of 80 on Metacritic.
Back to gaming, Rayman Origins is already proving yet again that if you want to please the fans and critics alike, then it's always worth drawing inspiration from a game's past.
Have a nice day.
Inspiration, yes, complete and utter copying, no. WOC suffers from that. I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with using old aspects (like you said before, if it ain't broke) but I think if you don't freshen it up, no one will care. Origins looks set to balance the old and new, unlike most of Nintendo's output (ironically wind waker innovated in gameplay but TP, which was supposedly much more of an innovation in appearrance, had very simplistic gameplay. It was medicore at best.)
Also, you really have to stop using Metacritic to justify your opinions. Honest, it only shows that you pander to only what a critic says, and don't forget that most 'professional' gaming journalists get paid to say good and bad things. I get exactly what you mean by expecting stuff from certain genres and franchises, but here's the thing- apart from Nintendo, the era of platformers is near dead. Nintendo were expected to make fresh new ones and instead they chose to re-release the same games now with waggle control. As a result I have to take my fix of good platform gaming where I can get it and spend the rest of my time looking for and supporting innovation (De blob, the new adventure games innovating in story like sam and max, Portal 2 ect.)
And while you called my last post patronising jibber, (:V) I hope this post is a little better for you. I get unnessercarily annoyed, but god, you have no idea how frustrating it is to see overrated games push aside better titles, resulting in the deaths of companies. The guys who made Twinsanity only just got the ability to make thier own title, and it looks fresh and fun. I apologise for being a dick, but I am a dick, and nothing personal is meant by me being a dick (it just happens that way.) But being a dick is also the only way for people to actually read what you're saying SO
So I guess we're back to talking bout Origins. Yeah, I am stoked for this one.
