Well, not really, as VDM is not a compatibility layer, whereas the DOS runtimes would have been natively executed at Application Binary Interface (ABI) point. The virtualized MS-DOS version is not genuine either. It does still emulate the legacy driver subsystems such as SoundBlaster, albeit with incomplete and limited implemetations, which shortly explains why the Rayman sounds was all messed up. Otherwise, there would still be authentic compatibility with 32-bit applications compiled for Windows 9x. :P

I think this video would be interesting for some:

Gotta love a guy for his sense of humour.
I wonder if Rayman 1 would be playable through this method?

Through a Virtual Machine? I would expect so. As it happens, I believe the ongoing discussion was about that very subject, but I haven't really been reading it so I don't know.

I think that solves that.

Please don't quote one of posts repeatedly, Master4lyf, especially when it's on the same page. And you did actually not quote my main post either:

Haruka wrote:OK, how the heck it was possible to run without an emulator?...
The explaination is, in fact, a virtual machine that was included with several Windows NT versions, only available for 32-bit systems. The problem why most people cannot seem to run Rayman, is probably because of missing resources, AMD processors or 64-bit operating systems. Often a Windows 98 that was upgraded to XP will include the resources, as backwards compatibility was highly important, before they introduced the .NET framework and new development kits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_DOS_machine

Virtualization refers to a process of running a virtual hardware platform with a virtual processor, on the same or compatible instruction set as the physical hardware. Emulation, while similar in concept of virtual hardware, refers to the process of translating between processor instruction sets (x86, ARM, PowerPC, etc). You might ask how x86 software emulation on x86 hardware would be any necessary, with DOSBox for instance. This is because fundamental and compatibility reasons with an older revision of x86 that supports older esoteric modes, while it can run on basically any hardware with completely different instruction sets, even x86-64, ARM, etc. VDM is based on another implementation simulating each of the 16-bit calls, by requiring Virtual 8086 mode to be present on the hardware.

Sorry about that, I'll keep that in mind next time.
The video you shared is quite interesting, have you tried the developer preview for Windows 8?

Not yet, as I barely any storage space left, and my 2.5 terabyte external hard drives are all filled up. But I have looked at news and reviews, even on videos.
But when I buy another one to make a complete backup, I will definitely upgrade my whole triple boot setup that's currently between Ubuntu 11.04, Windows 7 and OS X 10.6 on my MSI laptop.

OSX on a laptop? I've heard of OSX being put on PC's before (Hackintoshes) but never laptops.

Desktop machines are, of course, more preferable for such setup, because of full modularity, where you easily can attach supported components, compared to laptops on the contrary. Nevertheless, Mac OS X is fully supported on a lot of netbooks, probably due to less fragmentation in hardware, while having more comfortable portability compared to a MacBook (Air). Anyways, my laptop hardware is pretty much supported by OS X, with hardware acceleration and additional features on the Nvidia graphics card because of its universal drivers, and with hyperthreading on the Core i7 processor by using a Multibeast patch, but with the exception of the audio- and network card, solved with a workaround by using USB adapters, but I think reverse engineered drivers are available today, I just haven't updated yet. To be honest, I rarely even use my OS X nowadays compared to Ubuntu and Win7. I have made several OSx86 setups on laptops. Recently for my mom, being a project manager of a software company, where they decided to design mobile applications for iOS and Android, and she needed Xcode for that, which is only available on OS X. She didn't want to borrow the MacBook from her boss, containing his data.

Your source? Considering your claim that Rayman 2 was coming back on Wii I find your statement hard to believe.

This reminds me of that autistic kid who kept editing Wikipedia and adding hilariously false information about some upcoming anime-style Rayman games.

I think when it is about videogames, it is better to search for specific Wikis like RayWiki. :P

Indeed, but some fanbases, including ours, have wikis on Wikia too, and trust me, the quality is far inferior than to our wiki here.
