Rayman Comics

Post by RaymanTheLegend »

Hey again guys and gals!, recently, i posted a new topic entitled "Rayman fan movie!" (or something on the lines of that) but anyway, i know i was making it a sprite animated movie, BUT i have decided i will create a Comic strip series of my "Rayman : Legends" movie until i have enough money to buy a new laptop and Flash and a drawing tablet etc. so i will post some images and the comics on deviant art sometime after Christmas...

but, yeah, merry christmas! and a RAYMAN NEW YEAR!! :D

Yeah, well, i thought it'll be easier and more fun for me, as i like drawing and i can just explore as i draw, Y'know? :D its more fan made rather than copy and pasting, i can draw it and claim it my own, add sound and voice etc.

Nawww well yeah it is easier since you can draw anything you want, basically. But its more unique to use sprite animations because not too many people do that~ and I thought it was pretty cool.

When you animate, are you drawing frame by frame like I do to animate or are you using tweening and stuff? Or puppetry?

To be honest, I've never seen a sprite animation that's held an interesting mood for me, unless it's something along the lines of a YouTube Poop. How come? Sprite animations restrict you entirely to only a few pre-defined poses and expressions (if any at all), and it's very hard to portray the correct emotion for the scene. On top of that, you're using copyrighted material. You'll also notice that sprites are only used in gameplay. When story progression occurs, most 2D games switch to a comic style with descriptive text, or use fully hand-drawn animations. When there's a mid-gameplay event that happens, they usually use short sprite animations, but the vast majority is still gameplay; a whole scene made of sprites, especially if it's fan made, will almost never impress as much as a hand drawn image (providing you have some level of drawing skills).

Drawing your own images however gives you complete and utter freedom as to how you want your scene to look, the emotion you want to convey, plus it elevates your own skill to a higher level as you go. On top of that, it gives the appearance of a much higher quality production. People love to see their characters come to life in a fresh and new way, something sprite animations obviously can't do.

Nah, completely wrong, sprites carry emotions very well. Your only restricted if you don't modify them which I thought he was going to do.....then again I guess I'm probably the only skilled sprite animator on this whole forums (being that my games have all been old school 2d before)? Most people seem to be more into flash and 2d drawings. XD

2d animations get old and boring quick if people mash them into the ground. Sprites are unique and you don't see many people who know how to do them very well these days. From what I know now we're going to have anotehr rehash rayman flash animator instead of something truely unique, which is sad, but hey whatever they want to do~

No, there are far more Rayman sprite animators than flash animators, but there just plain aren't very many Rayman animators to begin with.

The fact is, sprites aren't unique, they're a preset bunch of graphics that the animator didn't even make. That works in the context of a game, but not so well when it comes to 2D animation. You may be a skilled sprite animator, but using game sprites that you didn't create without modifying to the extent to which you might as well have drawn your own just doesn't convey nearly as well as a hand-drawn animation.

Analogy 1:
What you're saying is like saying LEGO provides more freedom than clay. I personally would rather see a nice and beautiful clay model of Rayman than a blocky LEGO model of Rayman.

Analogy 2:
What you're saying is like saying Wallace and Gromit would look better animated with LEGO than with clay.

Analogy 3:
I would never ever watch The Simpsons if it were animated by a few sprites. That would get stale after a show or two.

Of course, I've watched every episode of The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show and South Park up to date.

Lots of people hated it for the purpose of what it was, but I find it to be Family Guy's brother, it's just as good.
