That's rather sad in my opinion (going by the core definition of 'importance).' Looks could perhaps count for something very small and secondary, but stating that they play a very significant role in who you believe should be your dream companion I just don't respect.

Good of you to misunderstand. I'm saying that while the personality is obviously one of the most important factors, looks are, while less, still important for some. I kinda see your point, but I prefer mine. (yes that is a bitchy thing to say)

If she were to be honest, just like you, I'm quite sure that most would be turned off by the fact that you weigh looks and personality equally. If you go out with that mindset, there's a high chance that your relationships won't last for very long and the novelty of looks will wear off quite fast.
 
Well as a male im obviously attracted to hot babes but i know for a fact hot babes wont have the personality and interests i want in a babe and similar to me cos right i like games and shit and if a hot babe says shes a "gamergurl" it usually means dreadful shit like "omfg <3 MW3" or "cant wait for skyrim 2 lol xoxox" so instead I try to play it safe and hunt for the average looking babes cos they normally are the aswom gamer gurls and id probs say im like average looking irl so then i can play in my league and get the personality trait too with the babe being alright looking too for my unfortunate, shallow male ways

I'm just saying that the way I see it, a perfect dream companion would be someone realistic, not someone shallow enough to not care about the fact that they were chosen largely because of the way they look.

Well here goes nothing, I'll list some shit without mentioning looks at all.

She'd have to be smart and open-minded about things, certainly not someone who shoots down ideas or differing opinions.
She'd have to have to at least have a similar religious stance as me, being neither religious or atheist.
She'd have to have an interest in video games, and I don't mean a "gamer girl", but rather an interest similar to mine; playing games, knowing about the history of games, appreciation for old and new games alike, basically just having a generally large knowledge of anything video games.
She'd have to not be easily offended; in my opinion, if you're offended by a racist joke, your the racist one, replace racist with sexist or whatever fits the joke.
She'd have to share most of my interests that would make some people tend to stay the hell away.
She'd have to not be horrified by my diet, in fact, it would be great if she liked ramen too.
It would be great if she could draw as well, as that would be another shared hobby.
It would also be good if she didn't like to be all over the place, I prefer to be settled down in one place and not travel much.
It'd be good if she had interests in other cultures as well.
Similar tastes in music would also be good, I don't think I could stay around a person listening to something that makes me pull my hair out.
I can't think of much else...
I guess it would be good if she also liked Rayman and Banjo, but that's a bit too much.
Above all else, she would be the person I spend the rest of my life with, most likely getting married and possibly starting a family.

I'm probably going to remember more stuff later and then forget it again if I decide to edit it in, but whatever. Like I said, I went into detail, it got long.

Correct. I would never be one to deny that.

However, I'm assuming the original poster is referring to a mate of the opposite sex to settle down with and so on. In terms of the future, wouldn't you be more concerned about the girl's values and deeper qualities? Looks may be a deciding factor, but does that necessarily mean that they are the most important feature of a prospective partner?

(I'm not really talking directly to you here, Rulez. I know you made your thoughts clear. It's a general argument to those who have jumped in and said "she's got to have a nice body" or whatever.)

Out of interest, where do you stand on having neither a religious nor an atheist belief? I'm not saying it's wrong or impossible - just interested in your interpretation. Or are you just not sure?

I just don't like religion, the thought of blindly following something without question, and even atheism is a form of religion. I do believe in a higher being, a God if you will, but I think the bible is a load of bullshit written by man. I can't go a few pages into the thing without finding some kind of contradiction, for example, it states that anger is a sin, then it states that God cannot sin, then it states that God was angry, so did he sin, or is anger not a sin? I don't believe in the big bang either, how does it make any kind of plausible sense that the entire near-infinitely expansive universe came from a particle too small to even be seen that just happened to explode?

I have a similar stance on evolution, I do believe that species adapt to better fit their environment, but changing into something completely different altogether is just strange. Even so, the evolution theory contradicts itself as well, scientists claim that species change to become better able to survive, yet the same people say that the modern day chicken is a descendant of the T-Rex. How is that adapting to survive better? It went from eating everything to being every black family's Sunday dinner.

Plus atheism is in no way a religion. It's lack of it, and you can't just confuse THAT with, you know, religion.

Honestly, I don't sit around looking up things about religion or evolution, what I know about evolution is what they taught when I was in school, so you can blame them for the chicken shit. Atheism though, I thought it was a kind of religion of not believing in God, since you don't technically need a godlike figure for a religion, I figure religion is just a group of people following any kind of belief, with a god or lack thereof. So I'm sorry for my lack of knowledge on the subject, and sorry if I offended you if your atheist.
I'm just throwing out what I know, not that what I know is correct. I'm mostly against religion because I was force fed it, at one point I lived with my father in the oh-so-wonderful state of Mississippi, where I attended a private school, which had a mandatory religion class, which is the only reason I've even read the bible. That class was just awful, and the teacher... he just oozed the "gay priest with young boys" vibe, it didn't help that he was actually a priest.

I used to share James' stance on religion when I was younger. I believed in a creator but I didn't believe in the Bible or anything else about Christianity. Not sure what changed my position. Perhaps my confidence in science and atheism grew. I mean sure there are many questionable sides to the scientific theories, but there is only so much empirical evidence you can dismiss before you start to question your beliefs. I truly believe science and technology together will one day prove how the universe began, explain the holes in evolution and will be able to predict the future of mankind - however, I also believe the very nature of religion will dictate that stiff attitudes will remain with regards to creation and evolution that will not melt under the pressure. That's not me putting religion down - that's just me stepping aside and explaining my views on something I have long since left behind in favour of more (in my opinion) rational and realistic scientific views...

In an attempt to bring this whirlpool of a discussion back to the topic in question, I would say I don't have a particular problem with a girl who holds a religious mindset. In fact, it would be nice to be with a girl who feels she has this security in life.

Well, I do appreciate the fact that you acknowledge your... pardon, but limited knowledge of evolution/religion (the slash is there to separate the two, not suggest that they are interchangeable). However, since you yourself say that you don't bother to learn more about those subjects, it's quite a bit ignorant to mention evolution all of a sudden and simply bash it. Atheism is in no way a religion. It's stupid to say that not believing in God is a religion.
