Re: Rayman 3 Scores

Post by MandM81 »

It is amazing to think about the ten years anniversary of R3 and the game is still not exhausted for points and new strategies. There are still secrets and unknown combos to find if you look for them. I don’t think we will ever find a game with such a compelling scoring system that can motivate players for decades. As you go deeper into the game and learn new techniques, a wealth of new scoring opportunities open up for you.

So, happy anniversary to R3 from us all. :teuf:

I’m thrilled to see the score thread is still active and that players are still improving their scores. I follow this thread on a regular basis and even though I haven’t been active as a player for a while I have not put my controller away for good.

I haven’t replayed BOM for the extra 100 points. I can pick up 200+ points in LS and maybe 400+ points in SBTC. I can’t see myself playing SBTC again though.

One level I did improve was DOTK, where I made a new combo in order to reach a new maximum score. As this is an anniversary year it would seem appropriate to release it now. At the time I made the combo there was no activity here, so I didn’t really bother to release it. The maximum score is obviously reached by getting 12 Lums from the four Hoodlums. I didn’t have patience for that when making the video. I settled for 8.

The Desert of the Knaaren - The Hoodlum Combo part 8

Other than improving the overall score of levels I find it challenging to discover new combos that perhaps may not improve the total score of a level, but reveal new knowledge about the game, a knowledge that perhaps can be used in other parts of the game as well.

As for FC, well this has been a long debate about revealing ideas or not. As I have now released the DOTK video there seem to be only FC left. My arguments for not releasing exactly how to play the various combos are: I have put a lot of time into developing ideas and skills to play some rather elaborate and, dare I say, outrageous combos in FC. One of them took me half a year to complete. R3 is also a competition for the first spot in HoF. And if anyone wants to make a challenge for the first spot, I think that person should at least come up with ideas of his or her own to earn that spot. I have shared all my ideas and findings with the exception of FC. I did reveal where the points could be found though.

FC is not completely exhausted for points. I know where to find 100 - 200 extra points. But as these points are horribly difficult to get and as one has to make other insane combos work at the same time, I didn’t go there the last time I played FC.

I wonder what kind of development we will see in R3 in the next decade. Perhaps someone will break the 860.000 points barrier?

Dark_Shadow: Cool to see the old Top 100. That brings back memories.

challenge acctepted ;)

i did find the launching glitch in the doctor's office recently as well. it would seem more appropriate to me for you to show how to get up there as well, but since i will release a video on this as soon as i reached the maximum, i don't really care.

as for fc, i have new plans on the drawing board and i dare threaten your top score in the near future :p

edit: i decided to upload the video just now. i wanted to finish DOTK before uploading this, but i guess it's highly unlikely someone achieves the maximum score before me anyways, so here it is:

@MandM I just watched your TDOTK video, how did you manage to reach the area of the Hoodmongers without the platform? :o

@DTUCC Oh my god, glitches striking again. 8'D

I should try this out when I have will to replay TDOTK. I was using the guide's original trick to kill the Hoodmongers.

CC: I use the same launching glitch as you do. Funny this one hadn't been discovered sooner.

Dark_Shadow: PC players do indeed have a disadvantage in levels where the final combo includes Lums. And that is the case in DOTK and HH with DOTK being the one where most points are involved.

Sure. For DOTK and HH, this difference is "visible" in the HoF. But for other levels, it's easier for console-players to make big combos. For example, the first green gem combo at HH. It's very difficult to get the green gem for 6.000 points on computer :( (Something tells me it's not the first time someone said that in this thread :P )

Edit : I am playing SBTC and I have a funny bug... When the two Lavicrafts are coming, if one go away whereas the other shoot me : they leave the area... :beurk: So it's a restart... Because the red can isn't available. I like the computer!

I've recently played through Rayman 3 again just to improve my score from when I was 10. Back then I scored 190k, and after my recent play-through I managed to score 250k (which I know is nothing compared to some of you Rayman pros!). - But I'm happy with it as it's an improvement!

The real question is : where did you find these 4800 points ???

When players have +850k, they can improve (with difficulty) their score step by step : 100, or 1000 points more.... but +4800 points???? :fou:

Thanks for the nice wishes guys, i really appreciate it! It feels pretty good to have finally broken 860K. As far as talking about my improvements goes, let me make my position clear:
MandM81 wrote:R3 is also a competition for the first spot in HoF. And if anyone wants to make a challenge for the first spot, I think that person should at least come up with ideas of his or her own to earn that spot.
i've thought about this for a while, and indeed i agree.
i've grown up in 2003 (since i was 11 years old back than, I find it apropriate to talk about "growing up" :)) in a community that openly released every single new finding there was. solutions were written which easily allowed everyone to compete for the #1 spot in the hof. the reason nobody held anything back was simple: we had not reached nearly as many maximum level scores as today.

i do remember a time, later on, when i was on the verge of becoming #1, back when jona still was in first place. i asked him for new SBTC combos that hadn't been released yet up to that point in time and i had to wait about half a year until i finally gave up on it. apart from that, every solution was "complete" by the standards of those days. years later, mandm set the same trend when he chose not to reveal his lates findings in FC.

times have changed, and i have finally come to realize why: we literally have no room for improvements left. having an advantage of as little as 200 points is a lot by now, not revealing the source of your edge makes your advantage even bigger. in the earlier days it wasn't that big of a deal. "Oh, he's 1000 points ahead of me in FC? I can make up for that by replaying the Bog if Murk!"
Rayman 3's Hall of Fame system doesn't force you to show HOW you've done things. That's the reason why it is invaluable by now to keep some combos secret.

Long story short: I chose not to give any more concrete information about my level scores, as much as you'd like to see them. I believe it adds another layer of strategy to the compettion for the first spot, and that's what it's ultimately about: competition.

I'm really interested to see how the game is going to evolve in the next time and I have set myself some big goals for the future!

Hey, it's an improvement, and every bit matters. I finished with around 270K points after my first playthrough, you know
