I ended up going from seasons 1,5,6,2,3,7, then 4. i'm also watching what little of classical who on netflex. so its totally prefrence based. but half of season 5 wont make total sense if you don't watch most of tennet beforehand.
 
Considering that the Song story arc is one of the most recurring in the Smith era, you're best watching some tidbits from series 4 as well, personally, I'd say watch it in order, each series have their own arcs, but there are some arcs which transpire over multiple series, and to get the full gist of 'em, I'd see things unfold as intended.
Anyways, we have the 50th Anniversary to look forward to, just over 2 months, now.

The most recent series with Matt Smith was edging slowly more towards a mix between horror and sci-fi, but most episodes have had dark elements in them that give the stories their bite. Usually, an episode is sci-fi and adventurous, I would say.
 
Okay, I'll start to watch the series maybe like at the end of the month or so. Whenever I seem to have time only on the weekends.

It's pure fantasy dressed up as science fiction. Keep this in mind at all times. You'll enjoy it more.

Or better yet, watch Tom Baker's serials, some of which are substantially better than almost anything Eccleston and Tennant got to do. Russell T Davies's scripts are charmless fluff compared to the brilliant contributions Douglas Adams (yes, that Douglas Adams) made to the show. It's a shame that people get so hung up on the quality of the special effects that they refuse to watch anything produced before 2005.
 
Hm, I remember watching The Ark in Space, a while back though, methinks I should give a few older 'uns a watch during the wait.
 
If you're just looking for the highlights, do yourself a favour and watch Genesis of the Daleks, The Brain of Morbius and City of Death. You'll love them. (I'm sure there are other great serials from this era – I've not seen them all myself.)
 
Ah, of course, I've seen excerpts of Genesis, but never got round to it, definitely one that I should get to indeed.
 
Set aside the next hour and forty-five minutes of your life: City of Death is on YouTube in its entirety. (Don't mind the David Agnew thing – it's just a pseudonym.)

Ah, there's something about the Derbyshire renditions of the theme which seem so eerie, something that I don't think many themes since have really recreated.

I've been listening to a ton of doctor who audiobooks and reading some doctor who books to hype myself up to the big day!

I think I have some idea where they're going with this. [In one of the commentaries, Davies (perhaps half-joking) says that John Frobisher is a distant descendant of Caecilius, and that Frobisher's suicide and murder of his family are simply the universe balancing out the Doctor's interference in saving his ancestors.]
 
Oooh, neat, I'd love to see that come to fruition.
Yeah, I'm aware of the wrong credit with the minisode, there's two other ones as well, one with Clara and the TARDIS, and another with the Doctor deleting himself from the Inforium, I believe.
