Same for me. The light coming from my window tends to bother me a bit.

I kind of used to have that problem and I got fed up with it so I went all buddhist zen in my head and now I can calm down appropriately to fall asleep! :D

Seriously though, there's some cool tricks out there. I have one of my own that I 'invented' if you're really having trouble - you have to focus on slipping away, perhaps if you find a small beginning of a dream forming, cling onto that dream fully and intensely and eventually it will take over your conciousness. But if that doesn't come, concentrate on trying not to concentrate on anything, if you know what I mean. Try to focus on doing absolutely nothing, slipping slowly into a dark and quiet rest.

Recently I found that being quite warm (lots o' blankeys) helps a lot too.

I used to have this problem where if I was really excited about an upcoming game or one that I'd been playing a lot, I'd dream about that and nothing else and it was keeping me in this strange half-sleep when I slept, which left me bored in my head all through the night. I try to pace myself a bit nowadays, only getting really excited about games near the afternoon, and simply enjoying games near bedtime.

Interesting question, usually I get into bed at night time and use a pillow and duvet, wearing boxers and a t-shirt.

I won't fall asleep if there's no perfect silence - the only one sound I accept are very quiet radio/tv noises. Taking naps at day is nearly impossible, considering TV (s) constantly turned on with maxed sound, dog spazzing about shit, and really loud neighbours with their kids.

Shroob, I don't think if that buddhist zen method of yours would work with my nephews <:) 1.5 week of no to little sleep. I'm still having tics when I think of those two, bloody hell

honestly though it's hard sleeping with someone else especially a significant other, because then you'd be cuddling most likely and it gets all warm and I'm like... TOO WARM and turn on the fan and then get cold and go TOO COLD. Yeah.
 
I hate when I'm trying to sleep then suddenly I think of something frightening and it leads to more frightening thoughts making want to fall asleep but render unable to do so.
 
But in my perspective I feel it's even worse when you're already in bed. Especially if it's like 3-4 am, since no one's awake for you can at least feel comfort or something among that.
