I think it's the eyes, R1 had very big bulging eyes.

I don't really mind the eyes but if I had to see R1 Rayman in the dark and only see his gigantic eyes I would run for my life.

I'm incredibly surprised (dare I say horrified) by how much Rayman 3's look is prevailing.

To quote my illustrated Rayman timeline;

"If Rayman’s parents didn’t love him it was certainly made obvious. Rayman’s mid-late teen years were dark, edgy, experimental, edgy, greasy and dangerous. He styled his hair spiky and traded his neckerchief for a hood so he could fit in with the hip, cool youth. He began pulling a smug, frowny-eyed smirk in most photos because he wanted to look tough. Also, he began wearing orange eyeshadow because he was a bit angsty."
