Personally, I quite like the simplicity. And it's also weird 'cause I usually have no interest in 'cute' things.
 
I don't really mind the eyes but if I had to see R1 Rayman in the dark and only see his gigantic eyes I would run for my life.
 
I think someone here called them "Bug-Eyes," seeing that kind of thing in the dark would probably make one quiver indeed.

To quote my illustrated Rayman timeline;

He styled his hair spiky and traded his neckerchief for a hood so he could fit in with the hip, cool youth. He began pulling a smug, frowny-eyed smirk in most photos because he wanted to look tough. Also, he began wearing orange eyeshadow because he was a bit angsty."
