Thoughts on the attract screens? Not in all versions(
Not the world paintings, but the demos showing gameplay if you wait on the title screen for too long.

I think it's ironic that we see the tester having such a hard time killing the midget darktoon on even ground, even though he apparently knows the correct way to deal with it (charged punch and ducking so it'll hug the ground on rebound). And it's followed by showing some of the nastiest platforming bits in Art world, and Candy Chateu.

I like the game, and have played through twice, but these screens make my reliance on farming the bonus stages for lives(the shame!) on my first playthourgh look less like my fault for getting something too hard for me and more like outrageously bad design choices made due to the whole "Keep every surreal enviroment as is, and don't bother hiring playtesters"

I have this horrible feeling that if I had played Rayman 1 first, instead of years after The Great Escape and Hoodlum Havoc, I would never have looked at the series again.

Must avoid tangent about gamer's being soft now adays and the benefits of forcing 8 year olds to play maximo,MDK2, ghost and goblins, ninja gaiden.....

I disagree with you about design. I think it's good
I played the Rayman 1 first and that is the game that got me into series and best Rayman game ever for me.

My favourite level is Eat at Joes. I like that everything is so dark in the first phase. That's something unique. And then these ufo trams and the beach. This level is truly my favourite one.

Heh, it's the best selling PS1 game in the UK, and it damn right deserves it!
Now thats a tough one! some of the levels are fantasticly challenging and have good design! :D

One of my favourites it allegro presto,I just loved exploring all the areas in this one, Its also what I call a 'ability dispenser', as a P ball, gold fist and a shiny fist, just find them at the beginning and you're set! What I also find fun is sliding across the level, now ice physics can be a pain to some, but here, it isn't as bad, because it feels like you're flying in the sky, which adds a TON of atmosphere to the game.

Another is an entire WORLD, and thats picture city! Now this world adds many new features and cranks real high in the exploration department, backtracking here isn't bad at all unlike some levels, because you'll find new areas to explore in these levels. In my opinion, Picture city is one of the most creative worlds in VIDEO GAME HISTOOORRYYYY!!!! :mryellow:

The only world I don't like is the cave of skops, thats mainly because all the levels are forgettable (except 'eat at joe's'), it also feels like a rehash of blue mountains, by placing spikes everywhere you look, and having a similar atmosphere.
Though Mr.Skops is a pretty cool boss :)

Gah, Picture City. Childhood nightmares turned me away from that place.

Playing it is hell incarnate, eesh, we really ought to hold a moments silence to all the controllers hurled and objects destroyed due to its difficulty.

Eat at Joe's is really awesome I must admit, but last phase sure is hard unless you dont duck to dodge Sabertooth Shark.

Ehh, there's quite a selection of PS1 greats, Rayman 1 is pretty damn awesome, but I don't think it'd take the cake for many for being the best the PS1 had to offer.

And I perfectly respect that but Rayman 1 for me still has atmosphere like no other game.

I think Tech took issue to how you portrayed it as absolute fact in that statement.

This. Rayman is a great game, no doubt, but there are others that are better, in my opinion.

100% Agree, the game even gave Crash & Spyro some competition!
And the atmosphere, I don't think anything can top it, not even the later rayman games! :D

I like Rayman 1 a lot but I am sure there are much better candidates for a best PS1 title.

This. I also noticed a few elements from Rayman 1 that Crash borrowed.
Although it's funny when you think about it. Crash Bandicoot was the reason 2D Rayman 2 was scrapped and reworked into 3D Game.

Why was that the reason?
