Said friend here, quoteing you instead of Hoodcom so it'll be seen. Got some questions.

1) About what time would you be looking to actually purchace? Some new things are comming out right now that make rigs cheaper to make.
2) Do you need peripherals too? KB/Mouse/Headphones/Monitor?
- 2a) If you need a keyboard, do want a mechanical one? If so, what switch type (Blues, Browns, Reds)?
- 2b) If you need a monitor, do you care what panel type (IPS, TN, VA)? Resolution (1920x1080, 2560x1080, 1920x1200, 2560x1440, etc)? Larger res ususaly means more expensive.
- 2c) If you need a mouse, how do you grip mice? Claw, fingertip, palm? Do you want extra buttons, or just left/right/scroll?
- 2d) If you need headphones, do you want ones with a mic?
3) Do you care if the GPU is nVidia or AMD?
4) What kind of work will you be doing on the computer? Gaming, media (vid, pic, music) editing/rendering, 3d modeiling?
5) Are you capable of building the computer youself? It is very easy, but some people do not like to.
6) OS! I will just default to Win10 Home 64-bit unless something else is requested.
7) How big do you want it to be? A Mid-tower case with lots of expansion slots, or a tiny little case that can fit on a small desk?
- 7a) Would you prefer the case to be steel/plastic, or solid aluminum? Some people prefer that minimalistic look, so it pays to ask.

Hopefully this isnt question overload. If you don't know or care about any given option, "n/a" is fine. #s 1, 2, and 4 are the most important. I can obviously just throw together $1700 in parts, but I find people enjoy their rigs more if it's built around their wants and needs.

EDIT: I tend to build things with good parts. Not necessarily better performing ones, but ones from companies with a good reputation and products that live a long time. Good parts are more expensive than questionable or bad parts. Thus, lists I make can be made cheaper, but I will not make them so unless I am fairly certain it will not impact the lifetime of the parts. I will never use a Diablotek PSU for example. :pfff:

If this is a bad thread to continue this in as it seems rather off topic, I'll gladly take it to PMs or another thread.

Well keyboard and mouse and earphones can be really cheap and good, my gaming mouse is actually a Chinese counterfeit version that I tweaked to boost its performances, it costed me 15€ and I'm very happy of my choice, it is a red copy of a Logitech gaming mice.

My keyboard is actually a Prolink office one that costed me 10 bucks three years ago, works flawlessly.

My computer is an Alienware M11x r2, with a GeForce GT335 M, a beast, but it doesn't support dx11 which is its biggest defect.
My earphones are actually a cheap but extremely good quality Sonicgear Ear Pump that costed me 30 bucks two years ago.

My final opinion is that if you have such a budget, find someone selling an Alienware m13 or M14 on internet, and with the remaining money do something kewl.
Big price doesn't mean big quality, my Sonicgear earphones are the best proof available.

I'm not going to put down anything people own, but I'm not going to recommend an Alienware laptop or knockoffs when someone presents me with a $1700 budget for a PC either. Gaming laptops have their place, but at $1700 there are others, like Sager/Clevo.

I'm seeing exactly what he wants, if he cares, and going from there. I do rigs from $500 "I want to play DOTA" all the way up to $5000+ setups like my own. There is never a generic catch all that works for everyone, those would be consoles.
