I can understand where you're coming from with the ending, but I found it a good one for this game. Maybe he reverts to his spirit form all the time - who knows, we don't really know that much of Mr. Dark anyway. I too really enjoy watching the graphics, especially because of the exact thing you stated. I do remember it can get quite difficult though - but what I found most pleasing is that you can no longer wastefully get stuck in a long row of spikes - there's always some way to hop-skip back to safe ground should you fall in and that's a big relief.

I also have a question for other GBC players/those with knowledge:
In the very first level, there's a key. When collected, the game prompts with if you wish to send/receive a UbiKey. You can see this same screen if you press Select in any part of any level from now on. What does this UbiKey imply? Is it multiplayer? If so, what kind of awesome game do you play?!

My memory is fuzzy, but I believe it was a method to unlock bonus content including a bonus world.

Wait, I found what it did:
Newray wrote:I've played the other secret level. It's part of the old 'UbiKey' system, which was included in plenty of GBC games developed by Ubisoft. Back in those days, my bothers had a GBC aswell and we had one other game by Ubisoft supporting the UbiKey system. I still have both games but unfortunately, I don't have any GBC since we 'upgraded' to GBA lol, so no screens possible.. And you don't actually miss anything good, the secret level was just another time bonus in a world-map like scenery.

From what I know, the UbiKey was a ingame feature of a Ubisoft games selection that used the Infrared tecnology of the Game Boy Colors. And each game was only compactible by connecting to a other specific one, unlocking things in both games. The correspondent to Rayman 1 was an Inspector Gadget game, and I think it unlocked a level called Ubi Cliff but unfortuneatly I never had the oportunity to try this out by myself, aswell I don't believe emulators are capable of emulating this.

I believe it was more complicated than this. I am pretty sure Rayman 1 worked with prettily every UbiKey game but R1 the same way, but there was a game which had 3 unlockable levels, one unlocked with this game, one with Rayman and one with something else. The system failed for the same reason StreetPass doesn't work well outside of Japan.

Personally, I would have loved to see the Ancient forest in Rayman 1. My favourite world from the GBC game. Though, the Swamps were fun too. Ha ha, my brother went crazy whenever I would play the Spellbound Forest theme. :P

Why does everyone think Spellbound Forest sucks? It's just the Woods of Light theme, 8-biterised. I think it's rather fun, myself.

No, it is more of Precipice Wood Mix (unless I had really crappy experience with R1).

I haven't anything against the GBC soundtrack, except some musics were a bit annoying when repeated several times.

Retrogamer thing I believe.

I can imagine this thought, but that Rayman 2 music is so wired into my very core that I could repeat the music over and over all day and not get annoyed. I often stand still in an area in the GBC version to stop and listen to the music and try to figure out if I can recognise nowadays where it was based on, and I almost always can, except for one specific one up till now. I think it's got to do with the Bonus Levels, but I don't quite remember.
On that note, I've always liked the level endings of R1 GBC better than the actual R1. The !-signs are cool, but an Electoon trying to hold up a heavy wooden arrow (and failing) is great too.

Hell yeah. I don't remember where, but I've come across them several times on this forum. I'll be searching right now - come back in five minutes to see if I got any results.
EDIT:
Here. That's one part of it.
In this topic, it is discussed how to rip the sprites. Maybe if you ask nicely, Droolie will do some of it for you.

Searched for "sprite rayman ripping" and came up with that.

Ah, really? Hmm... I'd better see if I can get my PC version up and running as soon as I can so I can find out what I'm missing out on!
I wonder why they thought it was a good idea to make the background in Band Land dark? :o
