If you are a retro gamer and you like challenging and addictive games, then I think you won't regret about this MS-DOS game from 1995.

This was one of my childhood games that I loved to play during the Windows 98 era, for hours and hours!

You probabily never heard about it since it got released only between 1995 and 2001 in Portugal and some Spanish cities. It's called GAMBYS.
The game was made by a small portuguese team working at full time for around 2/3 years and on its commercialization, it got excelent reviews from gaming and computer magazines due to it's originality, longevity and challenging gameplay. The game was about to be distributed in England by Psygnosis and Virgin Interactive, but that didn't happened because Windows 95 was close to be launched and DOS would get discontinued soon or later. The game was a best-seller in Portuguese and Spanish shops. It is said also to be one first games of the world having more than 65000 colours and 3D graphics, and it is portuguese.

Unfortuneatly the game got impossible to work from Windows ME on due to the quick technology improvement. DOSBox/D-Fend Reloaded don't work either at the time. But in around September of 2010 I managed to figure out a way to finally boot that game in an alternative emulation, making it playable although with music glitches and the game running only in the 256 colours mode (like my YouTube videos show at the moment). A few time ago, a nice dude was able to make the game work in DOSBox by creating a patch, and that made the game 100% workable!

I do recommend this game because it isn't only unique (never saw other kind of gameplay equal to this one) but challenging and addictive. Since it is abandonware, it can be downloaded for free without any concerns. Also, don't worry about the language, because it is available in Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and German.

Check out the official website here of the artist who worked for the game (and I know him personally): http://www.luisperes.net

GAMBYS' game already configured and ready to be played (It is set up to English, but in can be changed for the other languages): https://www.dropbox.com/s/sal2kmpo4vyovqx/GAMBYS.rar
  • How to play:

    1 - Extract the folder.
    2 - Open the DFend.exe
3 - Double click in "Gambys" if you want to play. Right click and select the setup button if you want to change the language of the game. It is already set up for English.
    4 - Have fun!
Written walkthrough: Coming soon!

Important:The videos I've posted were at the time I was playing the game in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and before a patch being created for DOSBox, and the game was running in the 256 colours version and the music was glitchy. The game will run at its full splendor with DOSBox/D-Fend Reloaded!

Oh, you bumped this topic. I have a better method now to run the game. Download "D-Fend Reloaded" (Google for this) and later contact me by PM to explain you more deeply.

I definitely recommend people to play this game, it is for me the best strategy and puzzle game I've ever played. Its specific genre is also unique since I never saw in any other moment a game with similar mechanics since I played this game back in my youngest years.

To make the game work in D-Fend Reloaded you both need a patch, that I have it and can share.

Also, the video quality doesn't make justice to the real quality of the game. At the time I was using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and it was emulating incorrectly the music, plus the colour type was displayed in the 256 colours mode, while the splendour of the game is at more than 60000 colours (one of the very first games of the time using such variated colour pallete). I should remake the videos with the full graphical and musical quality.

Interesting...

One pondering: why are the characters' names in English when the rest of the text and the development team are Portuguese?

I honestly think the names look great, even if they are in English. It would sound really wierd if they were in Portuguese. :P
