A '''Purple Lum''' is one of the many types of [[Lums]] that are found in [[the Glade of Dreams]]. These lums assure the cohesion of the world; without them, nothing would be solid or visible. Unlike the other Lums, this kind is shaped like a ring; rather than being collectible, they can be grabbed and used as hook by [[Rayman]], so that he may cross large areas without touching the ground. Like [[Super Yellow Lum]]s, Purple Lums have eyes.

''[[Rayman 2: The Great Escape|Rayman 2]]'' is the first game in which Purple Lums are named. In this game, Rayman gains the ability to swing from Purple Lums by absorbing a [[Silver Lum]] which was granted to him by [[Ly]], after he freed her from her prison in [[the Fairy Glade]].

In [[Rayman 1|the original ''Rayman'' game]], objects known as [[flying ring]]s appeared. These rings are essentially this game's version of Purple Lums; the function in the exact same way, and appear very similar (but Purple Lums' wings are insectile, while flying rings' wings are more bird-like). This game also features black-eyed flying rings; these are red versions which sink when grabbed, often putting [[Rayman]] in danger. [[Rayman]] must receive a [[Silver Lum]] from [[Betilla the Fairy]] in order to use flying rings.

Purple Lums also appear in ''[[Rayman M]]'', ''[[Rayman Arena]]'' and in ''[[Rayman Rush]]'', where all of the characters can use them. They lack eyes in all the game versions, except in ''[[Rayman Rush]]''.

In ''[[Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc|Rayman 3]]'', items known as [[flying hook]]s appear. These [[Hoodlum]]-made contraptions work in the same way as Purple Lums, but [[Rayman]] needs the [[Lockjaw]] [[Laser-Washing Powder]] to use them. In the [[Rayman 3 (Game Boy Advance)|Game Boy Advance adaptation of ''Rayman 3'']], [[flying hook]]s wear metal crowns.

In [[Rayman Raving Rabbids (Game Boy Advance)|the Game Boy Advance version of ''Rayman Raving Rabbids'']], Purple Lums reappear, and look very similar to how they appeared in [[Rayman 3 (Game Boy Advance)|the Game Boy Advance version of ''Rayman 3'']]. They now have a greyish colour. In the Symbian version, they look almost equal to the flying rings of ''[[Rayman 1]]''.

In [[Rayman (Game Boy Color)|the Game Boy Color versions of ''Rayman'']] [[Rayman 2 Forever|and ''Rayman 2'']], the Purple Lums move around freely in one location, ready for [[Rayman]] to grab onto them. In [[Fiery Depths]] and [[Dark Legacy]], red and black grabbing rings can be found. When [[Rayman]] grabs onto, they go and stay up. When he lets go, they go down. They can also hurt [[Rayman]].

In [[Rayman Raving Rabbids (DS)|the Nintendo DS version of ''Rayman Raving Rabbids'']], Purple Lums can only be found much later in the game.
