Maths and English with Rayman, Rayman Junior: Maths Reading, Amazing Learning Games with Rayman, Rayman Learning Center and Rayman Brain Games are the names of the English titles in a series of educational video games for children based on the original Rayman, which consists of a large array of PC and PlayStation games in a total of 18 different languages.

The series, known internally as RAYEDU, is designed to teach children the basics of mathematics and reading, with a few exceptions which also involve the learning of a secondary language. All games in the series follow the same plot and share the same gameplay. Save for a couple exceptions, the levels are almost the same too, albeit with minor differences in layout and localized educational tasks.

Another series of educational games, which also shares the same gameplay, is designed to teach children a secondary language, namely French, English, German or Spanish depending on the release.

Plot

All is well in Rayman's world. The sun shines brilliantly, and the clear water of the rivers bubbles and sings as it flows. Deep in the forest, the Wizard's cottage sits in the shelter of a peaceful green clearing. Knowing and learned, this wise man guards an ancient tome which contains the wisdom of the world.

Alas! All of this is but a distant memory. Today, our world is at the mercy of the terrible Mr Dark, who once again has overpowered us. Just a few days ago, when Betilla the fairy was visiting, Mr Dark invaded my home. He headed right for the Book of Knowledge. Despite our efforts to resist him, he stole all of its contents and escaped with them. Before leaving, he even destroyed the map to his hideout, which I had kept just in case.

Whatever shall we do? Who can we ask to retrieve the stolen Book of Knowledge for us?

Rayman! All our hopes are on this one hero who so many times before has shown his bravery in the face of the most daunting tasks.

No problem!

This will be a long, hard adventure. The quest to retrieve the lost Book of Knowledge will be dangerous. Go Rayman, let your courage and cleverness lead the way!

The events of the game are set into motion when Mr Dark breaks into the Wizard's house, steals the Magic Book of Knowledge and destroys the map to his hideout. Once again, the Wizard and Betilla the fairy must call on Rayman to save the day, this time by reassembling the map to Mr Dark's lair so that he can recover the book.

Once Rayman has recovered the Magic Book of Knowledge, festivities are organized in his honor, and he is presented by the Wizard with a golden wand as a token of gratitude.

Gameplay

In comparison to the original Rayman game, the gameplay has been simplified for the young player. The number of main levels in the game has been reduced to 12 (2 per world), each divided into 5 parts (maps). Each level covers a distinct educational topic, such as phonics, adding and subtracting or number recognition. A notable exception is the Hebrew releases, for which the game was split in two, with "כיף ללמוד חשבון עם ריימן" ("It's fun to learn maths with Rayman") featuring the 6 mathematics activities, and "כיף ללמוד אנגלית עם ריימן" ("It's fun to learn English with Rayman") featuring the 6 language activities, only they teach the young player English instead of their native language. The mainland Chinese releases "雷曼英语大闯关" ("Rayman English Challenge") and the Korean release "Rayman+ (레이맨 플러스): Maths English" also share this distinction that the language activities teach the player English, but the mathematics activities are unchanged.

Each regional release is available in three levels of difficulty, with the sole exception of the German release, which comes in four. Sometimes, the levels of difficulty are split into three different games, and sometimes, they are merged into one and can be selected from the menu. The German release is a mix of both, with one game containing levels 1 and 2 and another containing levels 3 and 4. The different levels of difficulty do not only provide different educational tasks, but also different maps within levels, sometimes almost identical, sometimes completely different: the maps are usually longer and harder in the higher levels. The differences between languages, for a given map and difficulty, are always minor, with the sole exception of the Dutch release Rayman Juniors: Rekenen en Lezen, in which some maps have been inverted.

The Spanish releases Matemáticas y Lenguaje con Rayman are the only ones to be available in two languages, which can be selected from the menu: Castillan and Catalan (Matemàtiques y Llengua amb Rayman). The manual is also available in both languages.

In addition to the main levels, there is an area called Betilla's garden, containing five short levels which the player may play to practice their skills without losing lives. The game also features a new world map, different from that of the original Rayman.

Each level starts with the Wizard giving Rayman an overview on what he has to do. Throughout the level, Rayman will encounter his hat at various points where he asks the player a question. The player then has multiple paths to choose from, the right path being the right answer to the question. A life is lost if the wrong path is taken, usually due to it leading to an obstacle which instantly causes Rayman to lose a life. During levels, it is possible to access a section where either the Wizard or Betilla give hints on how to solve the problems. The final section of each level requires Rayman to explore the area and complete a certain task within a given time limit to make the exit sign appear. Once all of the educational levels have been cleared, Rayman can then access Mr Dark's lair, a final level in Candy Château with no educational content.

Levels

Glitches

  • When the demos play in Rayman Brain Games, Rayman's 2D theme music is not played. However, in Amazing Learning Games with Rayman and Rayman Junior, the theme plays.
  • In Rayman Brain Games, the music for Butterweed bog plays in Rising tides.
  • In Rayman Junior, Amazing Learning Games with Rayman and Rayman Brain Games, the music for Tasty chase is heard in Mr Dark's lair. The music that is supposed to play on the level is from the menu of the original Rayman game.
  • In Rayman Brain Games, when Rayman is facing to the right, his eyes look enlarged. When he is facing to the left, they return to their original size.
  • In Rayman Brain Games, there is a glitch that causes life statues to not appear in the game.

A lot of the releases in this series are notable for being the first Rayman game to be have been fully translated in their language, interface and dubbing included.
