The Four Masks of Polokus are a group of magical masks that are hidden away in the Sanctuaries, except for the last one which was found by a baby Globox in most versions of Rayman 2: The Great Escape. It becomes Rayman's goal to find these after Ly tells him about them when she is rescued in the Fairy Glade, as a legend tells that when the masks reunite, Polokus will awaken from his long suspension. Each one is protected by a Guardian, who is instructed by Polokus to ward off any intruders that attempt to steal them. This rule is true in all versions except Rayman 2: Forever, where no guardians appear.

Each of the Four Masks of Polokus is contained within a four-sided pillar at the end of its Sanctuary; each side of these pillars is decorated by by same O-shaped symbol found on Rayman's chest. When Rayman approaches these pillars, a beam of energy connects his symbol with one of the ones on the pillar, causing the pillar to open, and the Mask to rise out of it for Rayman to collect. When Rayman takes hold of one of the Masks, he is teleported to Polokus, who takes the Mask from him and affixes it to one of the four sides of the pillar he is standing on (this pillar looks the same as the ones the Masks are found in). When all four Masks are attached to Polokus's pillar, the pillar spins rapidly, transforming into a gas-like substance. When Rayman steps into this at Polokus's instruction, he is transported to the Prison Ship. Then, the pillar resolidifies under the newly-awakened Polokus, but the Four Masks are nowhere to be seen.

Location differences
Throughout the various versions of Rayman 2, the masks have changed their positions frequently. The original locations are:
First - The Sanctuary of Water and Ice
Second - The Sanctuary of Stone and Fire
Third - Beneith the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava
Fourth - The Iron Mountains
In the Playstation One version of Rayman 2, the First mask was found in Whale Bay, which had replaced The Sanctuary of Water and Ice. The Fourth was now found on Gloomy Island, although Gloomy Island is mostly The Iron Mountains, with a few edited areas (most levels on the PS1 version were edited from the original game).
Rayman Revolution stuck mostly to the original locations. However, Beneith the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava was called the Lava Sanctuary in this version, meaning that the Third Mask was effectively found in a different location. However, Beneith the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava is almost identical to The Lava Sanctuary. The Fourth Mask was still in The Iron Mountains, but a new area in which it was located was created. The original area was still present, but was no longer in the Iron Mountains, and the Rain Dance Mask was found where the Fourth Mask would originally be found.
The Game Boy Colour version of the game featured the most dramatic location change:
First - Whale Bay
Second - The Canopy
Third - The Echoing Caves
Fourth - The Sanctuary of Rock and Lava
Trivia
* When the first and second masks are collected, a beam of magical light connects the O on Rayman's torso to the O on the stone pillar, which then moves to reveal the mask. The third mask, however, does not do this, and the stone pillar simply moves as Rayman approaches it, revealing the mask. In Rayman Revolution this remains the same, however, the confusion is added to when the pillar for the Fourth Mask is seen. Whereas the other three were identical, this pillar is different, and does not conceal the mask, which just sits atop it. Why the beam of light was removed for the third mask is unknown, it was possibly done by the designers to speed up the pace of the game and avoid having repetitive cutscenes. This could also be the reason for the redesign of the Fourth pillar in Revolution. (It could be that the Fourth Pillar was designed differently by Polukus as it was the final one, although no indication is ever given that the masks must be collected in the order Rayman collected them in)
* In most versions (except the GBC version were the cutscene is not present) the pillar on which Polokus sits resolidifies after Rayman teleports through it (after all four masks are found) it does not resolidify in the PS1 version, and Polukus is left standing on the slab that was left. The reason for this is unknown, unless the developers had to cut down on animation due to the PS1's limited capeablities and the fact that several cutscenes were added for that version.
