The Great Protoon is the source of all of the energy of Rayman's world that is depicted in the original Rayman. It maintains the world's harmony between its people and nature, and Electoons circle around it - without it, they would scatter all over the place and the world would lose its balance. Because of its immense power, it has been the target of Mr. Dark's evil scheme to rule the world.
However, due to how the game ends, it is unknown as to how Rayman actually retrieved the Great Protoon, though it is assumed that he has.
It is possible that the Heart of the World and the Great Protoon are actually the same thing, only under different names.
