I've always referred and heard people refer them as caterpillars and mosquitoes. Meanwhile, we can create redirection pages and we'll take care of this later.

To quote from the Rayman 2 manual:

"We can no longer even keep track of all the sinister results provoked by the arrival of the pirates: disturbances in overall harmony, the proliferation of piranhas, giant spiders and caterpillars, etc... Terrified by all of these events, the hens began laying dead eggs, out of which burst the horrible Zombie Chickens..."

This (and of course the fact that 'chenille' is French for 'caterpillar', and the way that Boss Chenille seems to be leader ('Boss of the Chenilles'?)) would seem to imply that they're caterpillars, whose proliferation was caused by the Heart's destruction.
