Anyone haven't heard Wine?

Wine is actually that runs Windows Application, which i have deb package for Ubuntu 9.10 and it will work.
Sometimes, Wine is included on YLMF OS, which the style looks like Windows XP.
 
Yeah but the difference is that steam will natively support the games under Linux instead now :)
 
More importantly, it allows for greater user experience who don't want the hassle and headaches of dealing with Wine. Linux is a great alternative to Windows, but most folks simply don't have the know how nor the time it takes to try to diagnose every little thing.

That's why this is a very good thing. Not only will Steam help users possibly be able to play their favorite titles that's only available on Windows, but also help game developers out as it could mean more sales of products. Possibly being able to grow the gaming community on linux further with real statistics showing the increase in the overall user base.

Microsoft's been terrible since the existence of Windows 10, they still fail to get shit right with it even today. Even if we ignore all the data-mining / phoning-home crap, they still have easily broken their own OS upon multiple occasions some how, some way. I've had multiple friends have to reinstall Windows 10 just because an update broke the start menu or printer drivers.

Apple's usually the next go-to source for people who are tired of Microsoft's crap. Their operating system is pretty nice, but while macOS may be solid, their company tactics suck with their overpriced products that do whatever it takes to prevent you from repairing or even upgrading the products yourself.

So unless you Hackintosh, flavors of linux are all we have left.

The more we can bring onto the linux community with welcoming arms, the better! I personally think Steam is doing a great thing here. I know WineHQ by itself can be major hell, but most users are not power users. Just because they can't write a bash script or create a distro from scratch, doesn't mean they are not welcome to linux. Especially when things can become more user friendly and save them from the likes of Microsoft and show software developers that we want support. The time is now to help get things pushed along.


Also if you ever run into any nay-sayer who is some linux snob, just ignore them. We don't need any toxic attitudes here, there's plenty of that in the Apple and Microsoft community as it is. :P
 
Yeah and trust me it can be a lot of hassle to a lot of users that haven't a clue what they're doing to get a Linux distro up and running then sort out wine too.

I have even done a lot of playing around with wine and could never even get Rayman Origins to run at a consistent framerate on my GTX970 due to the Nvidia driver issues on Linux. If a simple 2D game can't even run properly, then what would a 3D game be like? It works on AMD since they have open source drivers and I can use gallium 9, but then if it just had native support, I wouldn't have to go through the headache of setting that up. Without gallium 9, Origins had a lot of longer sprites missing (Plum said that, but I've seen it for myself too) which can make the game unplayable.

If I try to use gallium 9 on Nvidia, I have to use Nouveau drivers which just completely kills the performance, which is why I want an AMD GPU :P

Though saying all that, I would be fine using my Nvidia with the propriety drivers if the games were supported natively, without needing wine, lutris or gallium 9 etc.
 
Well, Rayman Origins is kind of a corner case. Th(at version of th)e UbiArt engine is obviously doing some very funky stuff to have the sprites messed up like that. A lot of 3D games from the same era do work well.

As for Proton, I did try to get Rayman Legends working with it, but since it's based on Wine 3.7, Uplay is broken (can't connect to the server due to some certificate verification issue) and so I had to do a DIY Wine prefix (latest Wine Staging), just like the old days. :hap:
If MINERVA: Metastasis is still Windows-only, I should give that a go with Proton one of these fine days. Now if only those Black Mesa devs would get their final version released to give me the required excuse to replay the entire HL series. :bad:
 
I had that exact same Uplay issue while playing around and also had to use staging. My only issue is having a Nvidia GPU and wanting to use Linux while getting to play those games totally screws me over :hap:

Speaking of Linus, anyone heard he's taking a break from kernel development? :o
 
Hmm, good to know about Uplay. I was debating on installing Legends on my Asus. As far as graphics go, I guess I'll see how it looks on the Intel.

My choice of distribution is OpenSuse Leap this time around, previously I used Fedora 27. I was going to try Kubuntu but it had some weird audio issues that sounded almost like a DJ was scratching the record of what the music / sounds were actually playing from. :lol:

I suspect it's whatever Ubuntu/Kubuntu uses for audio, since the desktop environments don't seem to factor in on this. (Considering I went from KDE Plasma 5 on Kubutnu to the same DE on OpenSuse.)
 
I was trying Debian, but it was fighting me all the way and had nothing but problems for me. I assume it's because of how modern my computer is along with the much smaller limited kernel. I know that Mint and Ubuntu use the Ubuntu kernel updater, though that doesn't work on Debian and I assume I'd be jumping through hoops to make it work.

The last time I tried it, I was using Mint along with that spare HD6950. I managed to get Origins working absolutely perfect, though I never did try Legends. Maybe I should try it out and see how far I get :mrgreen:
 
Legends is easier to get working properly than Origins, once you're over the Uplay hurdle. Good luck! ;)
 
Right well I'm just going to get a good AMD GPU considering I have a 144Hz freesync monitor. I'm still planning to buy an OLED TV, but the one I wanted is off the market now and the rest are crazy high prices. My idea is to continue saving after buying the GPU then buy the TV after Christmas when the prices go down.

I look forward to using Linux :hap:
 
It worked for me when I tried it, but Better Rayman 3 had some graphical glitches.

I've never had any issues with Rayman 3 on linux under Wine. I never got the patch to work that allowed the cinematics to function under a 16:9 resolution, but ah well.
 
I got the cutscenes working in 16:9 by making Wine load the custom dlls in the folder (like d3d8.dll and that uses betterrayman3.dll), but I just had some minor graphical glitches in the game itself is all.
 
I don't think I ever managed that. Better have another look, since starting a Windows VM just for Better Rayman 3 is really overkill!
 
I'm almost sure all I done was used Winecfg and told it to load d3d8.dll. I also think I just left the builtin / native options alone and it just worked.
 
About Linux, I was using it at one point, I recommend some of you try out Bodhi Linux Distro due to it's small install size and how it can run modern Linux apps fairly well on some older pc's. I tried Wine a few times and it's really nice that it is available on Linux.
