Rayman 1 is Rayman 1 because he has no limbs. I wouldn't work any other way.

Not necessarily. With limbs, they would've needed to keep him restricted in his animations, but without limbs, you can move the body around a little more freely. I'd say it's easier.

The animations don't really have to deal with the coding. Do they?

Yup. You need animation for the character to move, and you need to code those animations in.
