Actually, Jullia_Patti, Ubuntu Studio is primarily geared towards music production. That's becausing setting up GNU\Linux as a platform for proffesional recording or music production is very hard ( but very, very satisfying ). That's why Ubuntu Studio was created: to make it easy to do this.

The regular Ubuntu will do fine for graphic artists. You'll have everything you need set up in a couple of minutes.

And @Rayfan9876: now that is a sweet setup. You just must be rich.

Whereas I will admit I have a bit more money than average, it took about five years of work to obtain it all so far. :winkgrin:

You're going to want to check that again, that is NOT native. Running an LCD not at native resolution is bad for your eyes, and you're missing a lot. Your 1024x768 is also stretched if that's what you're running at. I'm serious about fixing that. :P And it's not one of those "it doesn't matter" things.
 
On wikipedia it says 24'' iMacs are 1920x1200

It also says the new 21.5'' and 27'' iMacs are 16:9, though what you said is correct for MacBooks I believe, those are still 16:10.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I also browse these forums on my toaster. Its native resolution is 1024x768.

My kitchen table is like RayFan's set-up on the previous page. There are four computers connected to a KVM, with one screen, one keyboard, one mouse and a couple of pairs of speakers. There is also the gutted remains of an old cash register, with its mechanisms connected to an Arduino board. There is also a load of useless junk, up to and including a Homer Simpson figurine and a Rubik Cube.

AFAIK, Ubuntu has same software "ticker" (not sure if that's the word) menu as Firefox with its add-ons?

Yes, it uses what we techies like to call a packet manager. It's a central application from where you can very conviently browse and install thousands of freely available software packages. This sytem is for example the one where Apple probably got the idea for the App Store from.

In Ubuntu, this central place is (roughly) called the Ubr need and more.untu Software Center and you can access it through Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center. ( Sorry, I'm not certain about the exact name, I'm using Kubuntu at the moment ;) )

As far as your needs goes, I think you'll have to install Gimp and Inkscape. The first one is an editor for raster images and the second one an editor for vector images. They both work really, really well and will probably have everything you'll ever meet and more. ( By the way, Gimp used to be bundled with Ubuntu, but they dropped it because of the space constraints trying to push all the needed software onto an image the size of a single CD brought )

I don't know whether graphical tablets will work out of the box with Ubuntu. Through my own experience with all sort of hardware, I'd say it probably will. But just to be sure that if you'd actually run into problems if you'd want to give Ubuntu a try, this page contains a lot of information. And if you really can't figure out, ask the really nice folks over at the Ubuntu Forums. You can also PM me with general questions, I will be delighted to answer them, but I don't think I'll be able to help you a lot when it comes to graphical tablets. ;)

Oh, and about the native resolution vs. otherwise discussion. It doesn't matter THAT much. You'll only have the risk of input lag in games, and of course, the image of the screen will be less crisp on lower images ( OH RLY? ). But it really doesn't matter that much. All my displays run on non-native resolution so that I can read the text better, and i never ran into pain in my eyes because of it or stuff ( I'm a bit visually impaired, that's why ).

I'm already an experienced Gimper :) - but haven't tested Inkscape yet. What I'd LOVE to is try Krita, which hasn't got a Windows port yet.

Thanks, of course. I'll keep that in mind after my desktop is fixed.
