How to get Tonic Trouble (Retail) working on your PC!

Post by Garo »

If you're looking for Tonic Trouble Special Edition go here.

I decided to make this topic because Tonic Trouble is an old PC game, the game was released in the year 1999 to be exact. Because of this it has very poor compatibility with modern PC's and downright will not work on Windows 7 and above. At least by default...

That's right! Tonic Trouble fans have released patches for the game to run on Windows 7 and above! I have put them here for easy access and to guide you through the process of installing them. My hope is that this can encourage more people to try Tonic Trouble themselves and see that setting up this game isn't as hard as it seems.

Part 1: Obtaining the Game

Because Tonic Trouble has never been officially released digitally the only way to get the game officially is to obtain the physical disc. Now if you're a collector or something then I have provided links to buy the physical disc. If you just want to play the game here are the links to download the game with their own respective languages. Keep in mind you will need a program like DAEMON Tools Lite to mount the disc images.

Links to download the game:
Links to buy the physical disc:

eBay

Amazon

Part 2: Installing the Game

So assuming you have inserted your copy of Tonic Trouble into your PC's disc drive or mounted your "digital backup" run Setup.exe and install the game. Setup.exe should work on any release of Windows. Once you've installed Tonic Trouble you should see a shortcut to the game on your desktop. Do not delete this shortcut unless you want to install the NO DISC patch. (You can find that later in this guide.) Now download the Tonic Trouble Compatibility Patch. This is an updated version of the compatibility patch found on the PCGamingWiki.
TT (Retail) Comp Patch v1.2.zip
(1.56 MiB) Downloaded 1323 times
Extract all the files contained in the .zip file to your game directory. The default location is "C:\UbiSoft\Ed". And you're done! Open the shortcut to the game on your desktop and play! Keep in mind to play the game you will need to have the disc mounted/inserted into your PC. Except you don't...

Part 3: Play the Game without the disc or desktop shortcut

This is for everyone who knows that they will break their disc eventually or just want the simple convenience of not always having the disc mounted/inserted. Simply download the NO DISC Patch and extract all the files contained in the .7z file to your game directory. Keep in mind to launch the game you will need to use LaunchTonicTrouble.bat as the original desktop shortcut to the game only works when the disc is inserted.

TT (Retail) NO DISC Patch v1.1

Part 4: Miscellaneous

When launching Tonic Trouble if your game crashes at the Ubisoft logo don't worry, this is a pretty common issue. Simply uninstall the game and restart your PC. I am unsure why this issue occurs but at least it has an easy fix.

As of today when I posted this (June 19, 2022) the compatibility patch includes the latest version of dgVoodoo (v2.8.2). If this version is outdated and you wish to update dgVoodoo to the latest version simply download it here and replace dgVoodooCpl.exe, dgVoodoo.conf, DDraw.dll, and D3DImm.dll with the newer versions. Keep in mind this will reset your original dgVoodoo configuration.

Tonic Trouble (Retail) should support all types of controllers/gamepads. This includes DS4/DualSense, XInput, and DInput.

Check out my Tonic Trouble AI Upscaled Texture Pack if you want better looking Hi-res textures!

If you're reading this, I hope you have an amazing and fantastic day!

Or if you're lazy to edit your binary in HxD, you can try your luck with these ready binaries for 16:9, 16:10, 21:9, 32:9 and various resolutions based on AuToMaNiAk005 Widescreen Fix tutorial above:
https://yadi.sk/d/JnhMfKUvvvKICg

But they were done with Review 22.10.99 version and might "have a weird bug in which SetUpTT.exe asks to be ran as administrator an infinite amount of times" and it might be due to patched out location of ubi.ini. But I attached there also one Garo's FHD binary, which doesn't have the issue (you don't necessarily have to get the error, but be aware).
You can check your version pressing F4 and writing "version" in the game.

GJ with the tutorial!

I'll probably make my own version of each of those binaries so all of them are bug free instead of only the 1920 x 1080 one being bug free.

Hi ! First of all thank you to the people who worked on this way to play tonic trouble. However I have a problem, every time I launch the game with the patch it hangs on the Ubisoft logo so I can't play and I have to turn off my computer. I tried uninstalling and installing but it didn't work. I feel like I could never play tonic trouble again :'(.
I have the French version and I'm on Windows 10

Sorry for the delayed response. School and everything has made things kinda out of whack for me. I would recommend deleting the "Temp" folder, (Located at "C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp") then restarting your PC. Install the game again and see if that works for you. Also if you get an error when attempting to delete the Temp folder make sure all background programs are closed, you'll usually find them in the system tray. Hope this helps!

Each version of Tonic Trouble (Retail) listed here should work perfectly with the steps provided.

Make sure you have the "NO DISC" patch applied to the game and that you launch the game via the "LaunchTonicTrouble" exe. If all else fails then leave the virtual disc mounted when you want to play the game but this is a little annoying at least for me.

No problem! I'll probably update the NO DISC patch to be much smaller so it uses up less space. Glad I could help you out.

Actually scratch that. It seems I cannot make the NO DISC patch any smaller. Basically in the patch there contains 4 files, tt1.cnt, tt2.cnt, tt3.cnt, and tt4.cnt. I assumed that these files were fake files and that the game would check if a random one is missing on startup. The reality is that each of those files are actually required for the game to work properly. So yeah... the more you know.

New update to the Compatibility patch! I updated "dinput.dll" to support Xidi. Basically this allows for left and right camera movement via the right analog stick. Enjoy!

Hey,
first I want to say thank you for your effort doing this guide. Sadly it didnt work for me. It always crashes before, on or after (than the title picture of ed) the ubisoft logo.

What I did:

Like you saied: I removed the Local/temp folder and did many restarts.

I installed it from the german version you linked (it would be strange for me playing it in a different language because i played it like this as a kid. I just found out that i just knew and played the special edition btw xD)

So I used Daemon Tools Lite on the downloaded package. In Daemon Tool Lite there are now THREE icons shown: TT, TT(2) (i cant mount and uses this) and TT_img. I can use both TT and TT_img to install the game, which sounds strange to me. I tried both but it didnt work with any of this versions. Than i added the patch and the no cd patch to the install folder. I tried starting from the .bat and also from the CD, but it didnt work. it also didnt work starting from the cd (or the normal exe) without the no cd patch. It always is the same.

I really hope you can understand what i wrote xD and that you may can help me. Sadly I lost my CD of the game, i really loved the game when i was younger and have good memories on it and would love to play it again after 15+ years.

Hey,

a friend of mine played the game as a kid and asked me to get the old game working. He also played the German version. Unfortunately, after installing and patching, the game crashed after the picture of ed. I finally got it working. These are the things I did:

- Replaced the GAMEDATA from the included fix from the German disk
- Updated dgVoodoo to the latest version (2.82)
- Applied the Indeo codec restoration patch for Windows 10 (PCGamingWiki) for video playback
- Replaced "English" in the "Ubi.ini" into "German"

If you want to use the AI Upscaled Texture Pack, just overwriting the textures file won't work. This requires additional patching! Just give it a new try with my updated files.

Wow thank you for doing this! I tested the German version before and had no issues with my patch, but your updates are much appreciated. Just glad to know there are still people who care about this game lol.

Hello, i'm having the problem where the game closes when it reaches the ubisoft logo. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, clearing the temp files, using the isos in the thread, and installing the patch with the Rayman control panel. Not sure if its windows 11 thats causing issues or not.

Yeah I've had this issue on Windows 10 before but usually just uninstalling and restarting my PC always fixed it so I'm not sure what's happening here. My best guess is that it could be a DEP issue.

Open Control Panel and search for "System", then click "View advanced system settings." Under "Performance," click "Settings..." and go to the "Data Execution Prevention" tab. Then you can create a DEP exception for "TonicTrouble.exe". If that doesn't work put your DEP settings back to default and restart your PC. If this doesn't work then I'm not sure how to fix it other than completely reinstalling Windows 11.

Plus we found out that:
1. Similar issues can be caused by using xidi instead of dinputto8 or vanilla game, but that's specifically for ntdll.dll occasional crashes on launch - check your error log in system Event Log. Xidi is attached with the compatiblity patch in the first post here (dinput.dll) - so maybe try to delete it, but it's usually only for occasional crashes

Event log can speak more about the root of the issue, but most likely it will just refer to the main binary, but if it's something else, it's easier to identify the problem IG, so better check it if it's still the same:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTJcIzOTQrI

2. Also, if you use the tex mod, experimentally you can try out reinstalling the game and use texture sync option in RCP before launching the game for the first time (Utilities>Other and under "Synchronize Texture Info" select "Tonic Trouble (PC)>"Synchronize">select the "GAMEDATA" folder)
although originally it was used for pirate head DRM patch instead of tex sync option in Rayman 2.

3. Plus, maybe it won't harm trying to change your soundcard to some other device if you have an opportunity. I think once I had some problems with some virtual soundcard, not sure though.

4. You can also change game location during installation too.

5. Once, even setting resolution to something other than 1024 x 768 in ubi.ini was causing such issues iirc.
The file is located in
<path-to-game>\GAMEDATA\OPTIONS
or
%WINDIR%\UBISOFT\UBI.INI

6. Also, make sure you don't use A3D mod. Actually there is modded sound library and config in DLL folder of the compatibility patch from the first post, which you can refrain from installing on vanilla game, but it's probably harmless without compatible dsound.dll wrapper working with A3D.

7. I know that some ancient MSI Afterburner versions with OSD turned on caused that issue too

8. And I never tried out if maybe Core Isolation turned on by default in W11 can cause that issue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEjt7daC60g

9. I doubt that Spectre and Meltdown patches can cause it, but you can disable them using an application called inSpectre, then restart your PC:
https://www.grc.com/inspectre.htm

10. I'd blame Control flow guard even less, but you can try disabling it too:
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Windo ... _.28CFG.29

11. Plus turning off Virtual Machine Platform:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 6f3f474613

12. Maybe try out optionally deleting dgVoodoo.conf so it will revert to default settings (but it will mess with performance/graphics)

I'm not having any luck getting this to work. First I've tried installing it from the disc on my Windows 11 64 bit machine. However "Setup.exe" gives me this error: "The config N°1 does not exist !!".

So I busted out my old Windows 10 32 bit computer and it does install there. It doesn't boot without any patch, but with both the Compatibility Patch and the NO DISC Patch I can get in the main menu. However, the game crashes when loading the first level. Any suggestions?

To the previous poster before me: this error only appears if you have already another version of tonic trouble installed like the special edition, as they share the same installation folder "ED" and cannot be installed at the same time unless the already installed "ED" folder gets renamed or removed entirely.

Tho there is an issue i have encountered with W10 and W11 when no matter what i try, the opening cutscene wont ever play when a new game is started and is skipped immediately every time. Do you have an idea how to fix this?

I dont have this issue with the special edition, only the retail one.

EDIT: i fixed it with suggestions from a previous poster, since i used a german install of the game i had to modify the ubi.ini from "nglish" to "german" and it finally played on w11!
