Talk:Rayman (cancelled Sega 32X port)

Thought I'd start a page for this since no one else has. I'm sure it can use some tidying up, just wanted to get something started! Egmformula (talk)Egmformula

Cool, I think that it should have a page if we are sure it existed but I think it did especially that a magazine article said so. I'm just curious if about the 3DO port because I know I heard about that.--arnoldfranklin (talk) 17:02, 29 June 2022 (CEST)

Jaguar port clarification

I just made an edit removing any mentioning of this being a direct Jaguar port. I wanted to clarify a bit why. So as I understand it this originally came from the caption under an image in one of the magazines where it says "Rayman on Jaguar, the 32X version will be almost identical" (translated from French). This to me is simply clarifying that while they used a screenshot of the Jaguar version it is still the same game and thus is a good representation of the 32X version. This doesn't say that unlike the PS1/Saturn/PC versions that this one will follow the Jaguar version more closely.

Another thing to take into account is the technical nature of the game. The Jaguar version was the first one made, coded in assembly. Because of this any code written for the Jaguar version was made directly for the Jaguar and couldn't easily be ported anywhere else. When Ubisoft decided to make a PS1 port they went ahead and made a whole new engine, this time coded in C. This engine would become the multi-platform Rayman 1 engine used for every version besides the Jaguar one. You can even see the interview mentioning this engine, saying it was coded in C on a PC and made to support multiple platforms.

Now why would they even say that the Jaguar version is almost identical to the 32X version? Well because initially they were! If you look at the early PS1 demos of Rayman 1 you'll notice the game plays almost the same as the Jaguar version. Basically when Ubisoft started making the multi-platform engine they tried to recreate the gameplay as closely as possible from the Jaguar version. Over time the development focus shifted from the Jaguar version to the multi-platform versions and any improvements and changes made to the game where made there first. Because of this the Jaguar version ended up lagging behind and is why it released in the state it did. I don't believe the 32X version was ever intended to do that - it would have very likely followed along the progress of the PS1 and Saturn versions.

Sorry for this wall of text - just wanted to clarify my thoughts here to avoid further confusion ^^ --  09:28, 21 September 2023 (CEST)

Very clear, and, having just read the article, I totally agree with your interpretation. It would probably be worth mentioning in this article that due to its use of C for programming, this version was most likely based on the multi-platform Rayman 1 rather than the Jaguar version. Likewise, this whole explanation of why the Jaguar version is so different would certainly be a great addition to the Rayman (Atari Jaguar) article. —    11:26, 21 September 2023 (CEST)
