A Shell is the name of the highly-explosive rocket-shaped guards in Rayman 2 and it's remakes. They were built by the pirates, and can only be riden on if you are patient enough to wait until they run out of energy from chasing after you, or if they are sleeping. If they hit you, or any other object or being, they will explode, causing the player some energy loss (if in contact). There are two makes of shell, they are known as the Walking Shell and the Flying Shell. You first come across the walking shells in the Menhir Hills and you first come across a flying shell in the Buccaneer, the pirate prison ship. There are also Walking shells in Rayman 3 (GBA) in the level Prickly Passage in the world Haunted Dreams. In this game, there are also red shells scattered around the game. They fly towards you when you get too close. Shells are useful sources of transport as they can take you over unsuitable terrain, such as lava or prickily areas. Flying shells are unable to go on lava however, and walking shells are unable to go on water.

Appearance

The shells are recognised by their horse sound effects, two black legs and shoes (however in Rayman 3 (GBA) they have silver legs with yellow knees and shoes) and a rocket shaped body, with a Pirate head pattern on one side. They come in yellow, but the flying shells are in grey or red. Shells have a friendly nature, but they are programmed as guards and will attack if you are in range.
