RayWiki:Image policy
This page outlines the rules surrounding images for use on RayWiki. For help on how to use images, see Help:Image.
File types
- Do not use JPG or other lossy formats for screenshots of sprite-based games.
- Both JPG (with a quality factor of 85% or more) and PNG are acceptable for screenshots of 3D games.
- Do not use PNG or other lossless formats for images which are inherently noisy, such as video screenshots, scans and photographs.
Resolution
Screenshots from games must be uploaded at their native resolution. Upscaling or downscaling images, as occurs when resizing the window of an emulator, is not permitted.
Screenshots from the original Rayman and its spin-offs
Screenshots from the original Rayman game and its spin-offs must be resized to 50% using a nearest-neighbour algorithm. The final resolution should be 316 × 200 for the PC version and, in most cases, 320 × 240 for the PlayStation version.
List of acceptable resolutions
- Game Boy Color: 160 × 144
- Game Boy Advance: 240 × 160
- Nintendo Switch: 1,280 × 720 (screenshot feature), 1,920 × 1,080 (native resolution)
- Rayman:
- PC: 316 × 200
- PlayStation: 320 × 240
Alterations
Screenshots from games must not be altered in any way. This means that cropping images or editing them to highlight specific parts is not allowed.
If black borders are present, however, they must be removed before uploading the file.
File names
When uploading files, be sure to give them straightforward, descriptive and meaningful names, ideally prefixing them with the title of the game (or other media) they are from (or an abbreviation).
Metadata
When uploading a file, always include (as a summary on the upload page or later by editing the file page) the Image template, the ImageOK or ImageNotOK template, and a category. For example:

ImageOK

The parameters for the Image template are:
description: A short description of the content of the image.source: The origin of the image (name of the person who took the screenshot or website where it was found). Use links whenever appropriate.game: The game the image comes from (use a link).platform: The platform the image was captured on.remarks: Any optional remarks.
If the image meets RayWiki's quality requirements, simply add the ImageOK template:
ImageOK
If not, use ImageNotOK with a reason instead:

Finally, be sure to categorize the image, e.g.:

Insertion into articles
Images are for insertion into articles. Do not upload images if you do not intend to insert them into an article within the next 24 hours. Unused images may be deleted at any time.
Sprite upscaling
All images from sprite-based games must be inserted into pages using the sprite class:

This will prevent such images from appearing blurry on devices with high pixel ratios (which use several physical pixels per virtual pixel) by forcing the use of a nearest-neighbour algorithm for upscaling, therefore preserving individual pixels.
Sprite-based games include the original Rayman, its spin-offs and other 2D handheld games based on pixel art, but not texture-based games (all 3D games) or games containing real drawings (UbiArt series). If you are unsure whether a game qualifies, ask a member of staff.
Large uploads
In the vast majority of cases, attempts to upload a file larger than the maximum allowed upload size are caused by violations of the above rules, such as trying to upload a video screenshot or a magazine scan in PNG format. If you have a legitimate need to upload a large file, reach out to a member of staff for assistance.
Bulk uploads
If you need to upload a large number of images at once, reach out to a member of staff for assistance.
Personal images
Users are permitted up to 3 personal images for use on RayWiki and the forum. Such images should be categorized as such with , and cannot be larger than 1 MB.
